Setting Boundaries In Your Life

What exactly does it mean to set and communicate healthy boundaries? Well, ask yourself what will you accept from others by way of the demands they make on your time and emotional energy. For most people, when someone asks something of them, their first response is to give in, to set that other person’s needs ahead of their own. Many of us have been taught from a young age to be “people pleasers.” One of the shortest, yet most difficult words for many people to say is “no.”

Setting boundaries is an important part of the process in making self-honoring choices for your own personal time – what difference does it make what your own personal priorities are if you allow other people’s priorities to override them, simply because you can’t tell that person “no” without the guilt?

To be able to set and communicate those boundaries, you will need to rely on your intuition. Your intuition often tells you when something being requested of you is not in harmony with your own self honoring choices, goals and priorities, but it takes a degree of trust and courage in that intuition to really listen to that inner voice – and to let it be heard by other people.

The bottom line is that your intuition can be used as a guide for setting boundaries, if you listen to it. Most of the time when people ask us to do something or make a request that negatively impacts our own plans, we get a queasy feeling. It feels bad or we know immediately that it is something that we don’t want to do. At this point you really are not factoring in what anybody else says or thinks.. With awareness of your internal compass, you can aspire to get to this set and protect your boundaries with practice.

Remember, making self-honoring choices, being true to your own priorities, and setting boundaries, all of these are necessary factors in living a healthier, happier high quality life.

What action steps can you take this week to set and communicate one boundary? Let us know your thoughts.

Introducing Balanced Living For Busy Professionals

I’m Diane Randall and as a working mother, an on-the-road SAP Consultant, corporate trainer, coach and entrepreneur, I’ve played all or most of those roles at the same time for more than two decades with a commitment to wellness and a balanced lifestyle. In this podcast I’m going to teach you the tools and strategies to a healthier, balanced life. I’m going to share with you my journey and how I can help you achieve the same results I’ve experienced.

Why this podcast? Well, what sets me apart is that I have done “the work” in my own life. In the past, I walked in some of the same proverbial shoes as people seeking my help-an unhealthy and out of balance life, so I can empathize. I help my clients achieve balance using the methods I know work. I’m your accountability partner, as you break free from the habits and patterns keeping you stuck. I help you set yourself up for success by taking small, consistent, action steps. There are no overnight fixes – while others offer you the “overnight miracles” that never work, I give you the tools for lifetime solutions and am here to help when it gets difficult.

Welcome to Balanced Living For Busy Professionals. I’m looking forward to this journey with you!

08/12/16 • 19 min

Today Diane asks an important question about when you should step up to a challenge and when you should hold your values at a higher importance than the task in front of you. To exemplify this decision Diane talks about an experience from her past where she was asked to take on a job last minute and help a client effect change in 5 days!

Diane explores the thought process of realizing that completing a job badly would actually compromise her integrity and how she made the decision to walk away with her credibility intact. This was despite being offered even more money to stay on the job. Sometimes you have to value yourself and your mental health more than any money.

What you will learn:

  • Diane teaches change.
  • She was given a job where she had to turn a company around in 1 week.
  • There was no foundational training or consultant support.
  • Diane felt bad about leaving and stated her case to the consulting company.
  • She was offered more money to stay.
  • You know you’re not living your values if something doesn’t feel right.
  • You need to be honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do.
  • All the stress left Diane’s body when driving home – this was a sign she was doing the right thing.

Quotes:

  • I was out of integrity with myself
  • You have all the tools inside of you
  • We all want to be in alignment with life and what we have to do
