Baird Country

Welcome to Baird Country, the podcast where outdoor adventure meets personal stories. I'm Jim Baird, your host and a professional outdoor adventurer. In this episode, I sit down with a remarkable adventurer in her own right: my wife, Tori Baird.
Tori is the owner of Paddle Like a Girl, a platform where she offers introductory canoeing and backcountry workshops tailored for women. She's also the force behind the popular Instagram page "Tori Goes Outside," where she shares her outdoor escapades and inspires others to embrace nature.
During our conversation, Tori opens up about her journey, from her inspirations for founding Paddle Like a Girl to the realities of moving to a remote location and raising a young family there. She sheds light on her experiences as a mother, including embarking on remote canoe trips and winter camping adventures with a toddler and her five-year-old son, who has disabilities.
Join us as Tori shares her insights into the challenges and joys of her unconventional lifestyle, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of family life, adventure, and the great outdoors. We also explore what it's like to be married to a professional adventurer and the dynamics of balancing our shared passion for exploration with the responsibilities of everyday life.

Shawn James of My Self Reliance

Shawn James of My Self Reliance Shares His Secrets while in Baird Country (Podcast Ep.#1)
In this one, I ask Shawn how he got into the outdoors, what his journey was like and when he decided he just had to make his passion for the outdoors his life. We're talking about a guy with an extremely good work ethic here. As a long time friend of Shawn's I tried to get to the bottom of his mid set and asked him what goes through his head when he manages to get outside in temps as low as -30 to work at the physically demanding job of hauling large logs around to build the remote cabin he lives at for much of the year.
Shawn shares some insights into what motivates him and also talks about some of the intricacies and challenges of building a cabin using all hand tools. Naturally, we talk about the outdoors, Hunting, Fishing, Canoeing and camping too, and share some skills and tips that will amp up your next trip.
Enjoy, and please stay tuned for weekly podcast uploads every Monday evening right here on my YouTube channel. I have a bunch more exciting guests in coming up.
