Intentional Interiors: Designing Your Home for Your Mental Well-Being with Anita Yokota
Badass Basic Bitch
08/15/23 • 45 min
In this episode, Anita Yokota discusses how our living spaces impact our mental wellbeing and offers tips to organize and declutter our homes in a more intentional way. Some key points:
- Our homes can make us feel more secure, calm and organized which improves our mental health and relationships. Intentionally designing spaces to connect with ourselves and others can be therapeutic.
- Clutter and disorganization cause stress while too much perfection can make a space feel sterile. Aim for a balance that allows you to function well and connect with family.
- Natural light, proper lighting and aromatherapy can instantly uplift a space. Recessed lighting is an affordable option.
- Using the "ski slope method" of organizing in small, bite-sized chunks makes the task less overwhelming.
- Family photos and memories in a space can serve as visual cues to pause and appreciate ourselves and each other, improving communication.
- The "holding box" method helps people decide what to keep or toss by embracing ambivalence for a period of time to determine how an item could intentionally serve them.
More about Anita:
Anita Yokota is a therapist turned interior designer and author of the bestselling book, Home Therapy. With a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT), Anita spent 20 years and thousands of hours in the field counseling patients before realizing she craved a more creative path. "As a working mom, my emotional plate was full. I felt depleted and decided it was time for a change."
With an architect for a father and a real-estate mother, Anita knew interior design was her next calling. What started in her own home quickly expanded to design clients throughout Southern California and grew to include a contracting business with her husband. The pair live in Southern California with their three daughters.

Even When It's Hard It's Fun: Lessons in Building a Business with BOXT Founder, Sarah Puil
Badass Basic Bitch
07/18/23 • 44 min
On this week’s episode we are joined by Sarah Puil, the Founder and CEO of BOXT. Sarah shares how she started her luxury boxed wine company from scratch. She discusses the challenges of launching a new beverage brand, from post-bottling fermentation issues to the recent bank collapse. Sarah emphasizes the importance of being proactive, transparent and authentic with customers when problems arise. She also talks about Drink BOXT's focus on sustainability through refillable packaging and zero added sugar wines. Sarah details her plans for future product extensions and her vision of making BOXT America's house wine.
More about Sarah:
Sarah’s love of wine began in her early 20s when she accompanied her Dad on a business trip to Chile. They were invited to Vina Santa Rita, and as she listened to the winemaker tell stories about the vineyard and the ancient carménère grape, she was hooked. She had discovered the art of winemaking and it became one of the loves of her life.
She continued to travel, seeking out wines in Italy, France and Spain. She began exploring the intersection of individual taste expectations versus varietals and began cultivating her understanding of why she loved a certain glass of wine more than another. Her taste-first approach to making wine started here.
BOXT is Sarah’s vision brought to life, and she sets the bar exceedingly high when it comes to sourcing, crafting and delivering her wine. She remembers the stories the winemaker told and of the simple elegance of the carmenere grape. She brings all of this to the wine she creates and she makes sure she loves every single glass every single time, so that she’s confident you will too.
