Your child is paralyzed with fear. They are nauseous. They are faint. They are immobilized. It is hard to watch as a parent. For many of us it can trigger our own panicky response.

When our kids are spiraling out of control it can be so easy for us to spiral with them. It often takes a concerted effort to remain calm and be the anchor our child so desperately needs.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I’ll explore some techniques to reduce your own anxiety while your child is panicking.

play

02/11/25 • 45 min

Effective communication is one of the most essential aspects of parenting a child with OCD or anxiety. When communication breaks down, our ability to support them directly becomes limited.

The way we communicate, the words we choose, and our ability to read our child’s cues while respecting their pace all play a crucial role in how effective that communication will be.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I’ll explore some important strategies for fostering effective communication and share practical tips to help you overcome any barriers that may be hindering your connection with your child.

None of us signed up to raise a child with anxiety or OCD. It wasn’t what we dreamed of when we poured over all the pregnancy and parenting books. And yet, here we all are, trying to not only survive, but thrive with our kids and their struggles.

What happens when compassion runs dry? What happens when we feel resentful or angry at our kids or the situation?

You are not alone if you’ve experienced those feelings. In fact, to be real, most of us have at one point or another.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what parental compassion fatigue is, what the symptoms are and how we can navigate through it.

Change is hard on most kids, but it can be especially hard on anxious kids. So what happens when they have to change their teacher or therapist? It can be rough, especially if they were well bonded to the teacher or therapist before the change.

Change offers our kids the ability to practice flexibility and can build their adaptation skills. The question is how to do that - especially when they are devastated by the loss.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about some ways to discuss this change with your child to help them transition successfully to a new teacher or therapist.

As parents raising kids with comorbid conditions, this adds another layer of struggle. You might find things that work for other kids with anxiety or OCD doesn’t work as easily for your child. It can require a different way to approach anxiety or OCD.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore five areas where ADHD complicates anxiety and OCD progress. I’ll break down ways you can tweak your approaches to address the extra layer of ADHD.

🆘 Raising kids with comorbid conditions can be exhausting and requires us as parents to do our own internal work. I’ll walk you through ways to help address your mindset, physical health and quality of support in my FREE series Self Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD.

Many parents who are raising children with both Autism and OCD find themselves in a no man’s land of sorts. Professionals treating Autism don’t always understand OCD and those treating OCD don’t always understand Autism. Ugh. What a struggle.

That is why talking to Dr. Rebecca Sachs is like talking to a rare unicorn. Her practice, CBT Spectrum specializes in both and her knowledge runs deep!

I invited her on to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to answer the most common questions I get from parents who are navigating both these words simultaneously.
