Artist Academy - 160. Murals & Faux Finishing for the 1% with Bryan King

160. Murals & Faux Finishing for the 1% with Bryan King

06/14/21 • 44 min

Artist Academy
This week’s episode features Virginia based muralist and faux finisher Bryan King. I put out a call for recommendations in a couple Facebook groups looking for nominations of lifetime muralists to interview for you this summer and Bryan’s name was brought up over and over. Artists wanted to hear from him and after checking out his photo gallery I could see why. This is another example of someone who takes pride in what they do and doesn’t rush. I have a tendency to try and move on to the next project ASAP but seeing Bryan’s work was a simple reminder of what could happen if we just take our time to produce a really great result for the customer. Bryan’s customers are a bit on the high end. He says that if he had to guess, he would say that most of his customers are in the top 1%. That is GOALS. To paint for that type of clientele you need to be in the top 1% of artists in your genre, and I think Bryan is that. Let me know what you think of this week’s episode with Bryan King.

159. Rolling with the Mural Industry with Linda & Roberto

This week’s episode features not 1 but 2 seasoned muralists: Linda & Roberto. This duo has worked together for many years on many different projects throughout their lifetime mural career. They’ve been doing this mural thing so long that while they were explaining projects and the year they painted them I was thinking, “Oh wow, I was a toddler when they completed that job.” We chat about what it’s like being an artist for hire and riding the wave of the industry. Busy and not busy... From working for other artists to stories about taking on giant jobs of their own. They have a lifetime of knowledge in the mural industry and I definitely plan to have them back someday to talk about maybe something more specific that you would want to know about their mural careers, but for now this is a broad overview of many years painting murals. Let me know what you think of this week’s episode with Linda and Roberto.

161. A Lifetime of Murals with Jeff Raum

This week’s episode features California based muralist Jeff Raum. This might be one of my favorite episodes because Jeff has a lifetime of experience in the arts industries and he so willingly shares it all. We talk a lot about what can go wrong in the mural process whether it’s non-payment, miscommunication, customers using our designs but hiring other artists to complete them, etc. For every 10 customers there’s 1 that isn’t happy for some reason or another and that’s just life. We chat about the ways to reconcile these situations and Jeff shares so many stories and words of wisdom in this over an hour long chat. So grab a paint brush, stay productive, and just listen to these mural stories in the background. Let me know what you think of this week’s episode with muralist Jeff Raum.
