Artful Painter - Kathleen Hudson - A Sense of Possibilities (35)

Kathleen Hudson - A Sense of Possibilities (35)

Artful Painter

Kathleen Hudson's paintings capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. She says, "My paintings represent specific places and moments in time: the brief point during a sunrise when the sun fills the air with an ethereal golden glow; a break in a storm where light pierces through heavy clouds; or the sight of glacial runoff sending waterfalls down the side of a mountain wreathed in fog.” Kathy artfully creates rare moments of beauty where light and atmospheric movement become sublime.

When painting outdoors, Kathleen is drawn to scenes of expansiveness. She keeps an open mind as she searches for a scene that moves her. She is not afraid to paint the same scenes that others have painted before her, because she is confident in her own vision and her own voice that she uses to expressively paint the landscape. As the morning kiss of light begins to illuminate the landscape before her, Kathleen Hudson’s creative heart and mind come alive with a sense of possibilities.

Jill Steenhuis - Dance With Nature (34)

Jill Steenhuis is an American Impressionist painter – originally from Atlanta, Georgia, who now lives in Aix-en-Provence, France. It’s been her home for over three decades. Her unexpected journey there is a fascinating story.

When she was just eight years old, her mother died. Her mother’s death left an enormous void in her life. Being creative helped fill part of that void. When Jill turned sixteen, her father gave her a book of the paintings of Paul Cézanne. At first, she was disappointed in getting the book. Like many young teens, she had hoped for a car. However, with the gentle encouragement of her father she began to appreciate the beautiful paintings within. The inspiration from that book began an extraordinary journey that leads to her living in Aix-en-Provence in France, falling in love with a young Frenchman, studying at The Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, and following Cézanne’s footsteps to his studio at Chateau Noir, and Mont Sainte-Victoire.

Jill’s paintings are vibrant and colorful. Her loose brushstrokes invite the viewer into an intimate dance. Most of her paintings are created outdoors – en plein air. Each painting session begins with a warm-up: she carefully prepares and lays out her colors on a large, white palette that she likens to a piano. Using her “unlimited palette” of colors, she has access to all 88 keys of the piano. With a large canvas set in place on her easel, her eye seeks out the nature that surrounds her. And then, she lifts up a paintbrush and without hesitation, Jill Steenhuis begins her exuberant Dance with Nature.

Crista Pisano - Capturing Nature's Grandeur (36)

Crista Pisano was born and raised in northern New Jersey and began painting in oils in 1989 under the instruction of John Phillip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, NJ. Her career as a painter almost didn’t happen because as a young child she had her heart set on being a ballet dancer. At twelve years of age she nixed that idea and decided it wasn’t for her. Crista's mother suggested that she take a look at Bob Ross, you know, the painter on TV. Finding joy in painting, she pursued an education in fine art. Crista graduated from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2000, receiving a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts Painting, and in 2003, received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts Painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art. With that solid foundation under her belt, she now paints full time.

Aside from participating in various plein air events throughout the year, she exhibits throughout New England and New York. She has received numerous awards and honors, including “Best in Show” at the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in both 2012 and 2014. Crista also won “Honorable Mention” at Plein Air Easton in 2015 and 2016. Plein Air Magazine had included Crista as one of their featured artists in their December/January 2016 issue.

Crista paints landscapes – mostly plein air and also in her studio in Nyack, NY. Though she is known for painting on a small scale, she also paints larger works in her studio. In this delightful conversation, Crista shows that her adventures in painting in plein air goes beyond the brush. When she paints, the unexpected may also follows – whether it’s rescuing a baby in a runaway baby carriage or learning about owls from a scary looking biker. Crista takes it all in stride, adding these fantastical stories to her collection of experiences that could only be had from painting outdoors. If you were to chance upon her in the field painting, you would see Crista Pisano passionately capturing nature’s grandeur.
