Unpack misogynoir and violence against Black women.
Over the past two months, myself and many other Black women advocates I know have experienced hateful attacks for our pro-Palestinian statements. I’m no stranger to this type of attack, and they’re irrelevant compared to the violence that people in Gaza are experiencing, and have experienced for generations.
It’s been unnerving to read them in my inbox as so many stories of violence against Black women circulate in the media. Though these stories are separate from the conflict, they speak to how Black women are routinely used as an outlet for others' rage and hate. As a victim of sexual assault myself, it’s never easy reading these headlines, but it’s been especially difficult when my personal channels are hateful, too. Today’s newsletter reflects the latest news and the misogynoir that runs as the throughline to each story.
Take Action:
- Read the We All Deserve Safety and Peace report, which highlights the growing attacks on Black women and other women of color in social justice spaces.
- Read Misogynoir Transformed by Moya Bailey.

Stop tone policing.
Last week, we shared resources on how to have tough conversations this holiday season. An important part of that—especially when speaking to people directly impacted—is tone policing, and how society can be quick to discredit valid arguments when they’re not delivered in a way that suits the oppressor.
Take Action
- If a person's tone challenges you, use it as an opportunity for self-reflection. Consider: why does their language or tone provoke a reaction in me? Where is my emotional response to this coming from? What biases do I hold? What are the privilege and power dynamics at play here? Are my feelings valid or take precedence over that of the person's statement/feelings?
- If you identify as a person of color, consider how tone policing might show up in your relationship with yourself. How can you reclaim space for your emotions today?
