Creative Culture Podcast

Dan is keeping up with Etsy orders, tricked Nick Brim into upgrading his big CNC, had a controller fail on the machine but he got his mini CNC up and running, and had some large slide tables get returned because people cant measure.

Steve is working on a little garden bench. A Zen meditation bench. And he’s trying organize his shop and get rid of some stuff that he doesn’t use anymore.

Pete was dealing with pet issues because Binx was not doing well last week, been stressed dealing with that, fulfilled some custom orders with the laser with Emma, and has been enjoying time with Emma while she’s home for spring break setting up processes for the business.

Mike went to Tahoe last week, taught Jackson how to ride a bike, got a large air compressor for the CNC, landed a large built in job, delivered a desk, and is working on a large live edge table from a valley oak that came down locally.

Good Afternoon, first, thank you for the years long information that helps us all get better. To us, the value the three of you bring to our shop is so disgustingly beyond the small price of being a VIP member.

On a icky note, since there is much conversation about shop fires on AWP right now we felt it timely to come out of our hole and tell you we lost our home and our hobby wood shop to fire in September, ultimately it was ruled, by our insurance adjustor & the fire marshal to be a rechargeable battery, and it was plugged in to a surge protector that seems to have failed. I can't say the name of the battery but I will say that our adjuster let us know that he'd been to 10 fires in our state last year and 6/10 were a rechargeable battery in a garage.

The shop fire was put out, the home seemed smoke damaged when we left at 3 AM. At 5 AM we were alerted to the news that the fire was still smoldering in the attic and took out the rest of our home.

We lost everything, if it wasn't fire damage it was water damage.

We've moved to a commercial spot and officially made ourselves a small Husband & wife business. We have some great young apprentices and are recovering the loss surprisingly well. We are incredibly busy, and we are incredibly grateful to still be around.

If you won't mind sharing our, "lesson learned" from this wildly difficult time in our lives - for the love of our maker family- put your recharging batteries on a surge protecting power strip and turn the power strip off before you leave your shop at the end of each work day.

Thank you again for the value & professionalism you've added to our lives.

Max & I would like to challenge all AWP listeners, and our maker community to become VIP members and give back a bit of the good fortune AWP puts out into our worlds.

Thanks Again,

Mindie Kuhns

Episode 150

Dan is working on etsy orders, raised his prices and is still selling a ton of products, and he set up his 2nd Onefinity CNC!

Pete had his vendor event, made a ton of supplies for future events, has been trying to keep up with etsy orders this week because his product got shouted out in a video, has been dealing with 3D printing drama in the community with new machines coming out, and is dealing with landscaping and garden prep.

Mike is waiting for his new CNC to drop, getting a new air compressor for the machine, canceled his 3D printer, getting ready for some other new machines coming to the shop, and working on a desk and a table.

Drew is working on a big video for this weekend, and prepping for a big giveaway, and a tool announcement.

My question for tonight is about jigs.

I wonder, does using jigs makes you a better woodworker or, does a good woodworker knows when it’s worth the time to make jigs?

Also, are you planning on making an April’s fools day video special? I know I planned one, I just love those!

I’ve been making bunch of bottle openers and as I don’t have a CNC, yet, I had to print myself a template, cut with a band saw and then use a template bit on a router.
The problem is that I have a lot of tear out. I only leave like 1 mm to half a mil on the bandsaw so the router bit should not have to work a lot.
I tried with a compression spiral bit and had 4 or 5 scary catches. Then I tried a big cheap bit and surprisingly I had less catch and tear out.
I thought compression bit were supposed to be better, am I doing some wrong here ?
