Episode 188: WCBL All-Star Game Spectacular
Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast
07/28/22 • 32 min
Words probably can’t describe the feeling everyone had Saturday night after witnessing the Western Canadian Baseball League’s All-Star Game festivities in Okotoks. A crowd of 6,000+ people, the players and coaches enjoying every minute of it, some incredible moments of baseball, fireworks at the end, and a million memories made, and it feels like we’re just scratching the surface. Make sure to head to albertadugoutstories.com for the game story and photo gallery that we posted earlier this week. We have plenty more stories to come in the days ahead. Here on the podcast, instead of one guest telling us the story of the day, we have a series of shorter interviews done before and after the game, to help capture the day’s events. Listen in to hear from Matt Wolff of the Brooks Bombers, Braden DeSonia of the Medicine Hat Mavericks, McCoy Pearce and Micah McDowell of the Okotoks Dawgs, Weyburn Beavers slugger Nolan Machibroda, and Sylvan Lake Gulls infielder and All-Star Game MVP Ethan Ho.

Episode 204: Brent Radlinsky
Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast
11/10/22 • 27 min
There’s no doubting Brent Radlinsky’s dedication to the New York Yankees. All you need to do is see the wall behind him when he’s hosting his podcast or chatting with you on Zoom. It’s all jerseys and memorabilia. There’s also no doubting his love of the game of baseball. Whether it’s talking about the game on his Fourteen Twenty Sports Bar podcast, the occasional writing he does for Belly Up Sports, or at the field as an umpire at a variety of levels in Southern Alberta, Radlinsky is a baseball lifer. The Fort Macleod product joined us recently and we shared a few laughs about his baseball journey, some of his favourite moments, and the worst call he ever made.

Episode 158: Mike Frostad
Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast
11/25/21 • 26 min
Calling the last few weeks a "whirlwind" might be an understatement for Mike Frostad. It started with unexpected playoff run by his Atlanta Braves that culminated with a World Series victory over the Houston Astros. Then came the aftermath and celebrations before everyone parted ways for the winter. Frostad not only headed back home to Alberta, but he announced he had been courted by the Los Angeles Angels to become their new director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer. We caught up with him after he spoke at the Coaching Teaching Leadership Conference in Calgary last weekend to talk about the World Series, working with Mike Soroka on his injuries, the changing landscape of being a trainer since he was with the Medicine Hat Blue Jays in the 1990's, and what his wife's support has meant to him in his journey.

Episode 153: ”Going The Distance” Author Willie Steele
Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast
10/14/21 • 36 min
With the baseball season coming to an end here in Alberta, we thought we’d switch things up on this episode to bring on someone we’ve wanted to chat with for a while. Willie Steele is the author of “Going the Distance: The Life and Works of W.P. Kinsella". Released in 2019, it’s the biography of the Alberta-born scribe most famous for the novel “Shoeless Joe.” Kinsella was born and raised in the Edmonton area and also spent time at the University of Calgary among his many travels. Steele has been a big supporter of us, sharing our stories and even writing one of his own for us on his experience at the Field of Dreams game this season.

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
We wanted to build a place where we could share stories of baseball's past, present and future in Alberta. We have a rich history in the game here, but also a thriving scene today, and we were hoping to address a gap in media coverage by providing people with written stories and a podcast.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
We hope that listeners gain insight into the game here. Whether it's the journeys of the athletes and coaches or the contributions of families and volunteers, there are so many great stories to tell.
Which episode should someone start with?
We'd obviously love for everyone to start with the first one. But, for the most part, there isn't a sequence to our shows, so it's not like you're missing anything by skipping an episode or two. Start wherever you'd like!
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
This is like picking favourite children! Personally, I love stories of resilience and perseverance. Episode 29 with Myles Creran will always stand out after he talked about playing baseball while battling MS, while Episode 164 with Luxon Glor outlines how he had to leave the game because of a freak injury but still had a great athletic career (just a different sport).
Which episode are you most proud of?
We put a lot of pride into each and every episode we put together. Our goal is to give our listeners value, but also to provide our guests with a platform to be able to tell their story.
What is your vision for your show?
We want the show to be a place where people can listen to learn more about the people and organizations that make Alberta's baseball scene so vibrant. We know it's a niche market, but it's also an important story to tell given the growth of the game in the last number of years.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
I'm a big fan of "Deep Left Field" with Mike Wilner talking about the Toronto Blue Jays and "The Chris Rose Rotation" visiting with different MLB players.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
We came up with "Alberta Dugout Stories" as we wanted to keep it as non-cryptic as possible, while also being semi-creative. "Alberta Baseball Stories" seemed too simple, so we thought about how the dugout is where people gather, and felt it was a good fit.
