Adult Education - Ray Harkins from 100 Words Or Less
play

09/24/21 • 55 min

If you're anything like me you listen to podcasts and end up having follow up questions or comments for the guests and hosts. I'll be sitting in my car thinking, "Wait....I want to know more about that!" This episode is giving me an opportunity to ask those questions.

Today I'm catching up with Ray Harkins. He's the singer for the hardcore band Taken but also the host of one of my favorite podcasts, 100 Words Or Less. It was a pleasure to catch up with Ray and to chat about the hardcore and heavy music scene for a bit. I'll be honest, my involvement in the scene has dwindled a lot over the last few years but I still have so much love for it. It felt good to go down a rabbit hole with Ray.

Adult Education - Productivity Guilt With Madeleine Dore
play

02/09/22 • 30 min

You know that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you're relaxing and think you have something else you should be doing? That's called productivity guilt. We've conditioned ourselves to believe that we should be filling up every second of the day with things that need to get done. Is that really what life is all about?

Madeleine Dore is an Australian writer, interviewer, and I'd call her a researcher as well. She's spent the last 5 years asking people how they navigate their days and productivity. What she's discovered is that so much of what we think will help us get things done is actually setting us up to fail.

Her first book "I Didn't Do The Thing Today: Letting Go Of Productivity Guilt" is fantastic. We discuss how we got to where we are as a society driven by getting things done, how to-do lists kill our creativity and our mutual love for the children's program Bluey.

If you want to learn more about Madeleine, you can check out her website, madeleinedore.com, or listen to her podcast Routines & Ruts.

Adult Education - The Child Code with Dr. Danielle Dick
play

11/04/21 • 31 min

Every parent has worries about how their actions will impact their child when the grow up. It's part of the deal of being a parent. I know for me I had fears that something I had watched on TV would give her nightmares. When she was a month or two old my daughter was sleeping on my chest so I started watching Nightmare On Elm Street. At some point during the movie she woke up and I had this terrible feeling that she saw just enough to terrify her little brain.

In all honesty she was so young she probably had no idea what was going on in the first place. But these are the things you worry about as a parent. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be the perfect parents and perfect people for our kids.

What if I told you that most of what we do will have no impact on their behavior as an adult? That's what Dr. Danielle Dick's research has found. Genetics play a bigger part in determining what our kid is going to be like. Knowing that does take some of the pressure off us, but it also allows us to find different ways to work with them.

Understanding that our kids may be genetically predisposed to a certain type of behavior gives us the opportunity to meet them where they're at.

Dr. Dick has laid out her research in a new book called 'The Child Code: Understanding Your Child's Unique Nature For Happier, More Effective Parenting.' We'll be talking about this research in this week's conversation.

Adult Education - How To Master The Marathon With Ali Nolan
play

09/29/21 • 53 min

I met Ali Nolan after I reached out to her via social media because I had read one of her articles in Runner's World. She touched on a lot of things that I was going through with my running at that point. She agreed to have a chat with me (which you can listen to in episode 9 of this show) and we hit it off.

During that conversation Ali mentioned that she was working on a book. I'm happy to report that the book is finally here! It's called 'Master the Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide For Women.' I think this is such a masterpiece that covers all of the angles people need while preparing for big races.

It's a pleasure to have Ali back on Adult Education. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Adult Education - Be More Well Is Becoming Adult Education
play

09/14/21 • 5 min

It's time for a change with Be More Well. As this show has progressed over the last nearly 2 years I've started to realize that the name does not represent what my goals are.

This started out as a wellness oriented podcast but I've started to realize that it's more of an education show. Most of my guests are people I pick because I'm interested in learning more about their topic of expertise. I've had to turn down some really interesting conversations because they didn't fall into the "wellness" category. I don't want to have to do that.

So, I'm changing things up. As I have been craving information and education. But, like most of you, I don't have the time or money to go back to school. That's where this podcast comes into play. My goal will continue to be to bring you interesting and compelling guests who have knowledge to share on a particular topic. That way we never have to stop learning.

Be More Well is being retired and in comes Adult Education.

If you already followed us on Instagram then nothing will change for you. If you're a new listener, make sure you follow us @adulteducationpodcast.

Adult Education - W. Chris Winter on The Rested Child
play

09/22/21 • 43 min

One thing I've learned over the last couple years of my health journey is how important it is to get a good night's sleep. Sleep is crucial in so many aspects of health. As adults we can recognize that and try to make changes.

But we seem to be ignoring the negative affects that it may have in our children. We put all kinds of focus on getting our babies to sleep and then we let them fend for themselves until they become adults.

Kids are being described as being fussy, lazy and some are being diagnosed with ADHD when much of the problem is they aren't getting enough sleep.

Neurologist and sleep expert Dr. W. Chris Winter has a new book called 'The Rested Child'. Chris identifies the signs and symptoms of the most common sleep disorders affecting children today, and gives practical advice for parents and caregivers to help address these issues.

It was a pleasure chatting with Chris for this episode. He's full of knowledge and he's able to relay his expertise in a very easy way. And it's always great to catch up with a fellow Depeche Mode fan.

Adult Education - Jami Crist From Super Coffee On 'Rebranding'
play

10/06/21 • 50 min

If you've been following this show, you know that I've gone through a rebranding. I changed the name up to fit a different style of conversation. To learn more about that, check out episode 60 of Adult Education.

A friend of mine, and friend of the show, recently went through a rebranding of her own. I'm talking about Jami Crist. She joins the show for the third time so we can discuss her decision to leave her long time employer, Under Armour, to switch over to startup Super Coffee.

The move caught a lot of people by surprise, especially me. Jami broke the news just a few days after our last conversation and she never said anything about it to me. Not that she should feel required to share her life with me, but I want the dirt!

It is always a pleasure to speak with Jami so I'm very happy she was able to join me.

Adult Education - Ned Johnson on What Do You Say
play

08/25/21 • 31 min

Every parent wants the best for their kids. Sometimes that love can be smothering and might hold their kids back from learning essential life lessons to grow in the future. You've all heard the term 'helicopter parenting'. It's all done out of love. But maybe we need to give them a little more freedom to make mistakes and learn what they want from life, as opposed to what we want them to want from life.

The authors of the best-selling book 'The Self Driven Child' are back with a new book called 'What Do You Say: How To Talk With Kids To Build Motivation, Stress Tolerance And A Happy Home. I had the chance to speak with one of the authors, Ned Johnson, about the book. He is such a great guest for a podcast and I'm very lucky to have had this opportunity. I hope you enjoy!

Adult Education - The Chattahoochies Part 2: Audra Mae
play

12/03/21 • 52 min

Welcome to part 2 of my 4 part series with The Chattahoochies. This week I'm chatting with Audra Mae. She's incredible. I've been a fan of hers for over a decade now and it gives me so much pleasure to learn more about her and share her story with all of you.

Just some details about Audra. She's released three albums and an EP. She's been a guest vocalist on tracks from Avicii, Flo Rida and The All American Reject. And she's written some smash hits for artists like Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion and Susan Doyle. We talk a bit about Susan in this conversation.

Thanks for listening. If you missed part 1 of my series with The Chattahoochies, check out episode 67 with Nelly Joy. Up next is part 3 with Summer Overstreet. Great things coming your way on the Adult Education podcast.

**In the intro of the podcast I say that she wrote HeartBREAK Song for Kelly Clarkson. It's actually called HeartBEAT Song. My fault!**
