Have you ever wondered with your child or a family member might have bipolar disorder, in addition to or instead of ADHD? Do the rages your child exhibits always represent bipolar disorder? This can be a difficult distinction to make for health care professionals and yet it is an important one to make, due to the serious nature of bipolar disorder. In today’s show my guest Dr. Robert Olivardio and I will discuss how parents and family members can provide information to the health care professionals they’re working with that can be very helpful in determining whether a bipolar disorder is present. Dr. Olivario is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Lexington Massachusetts and also a clinical instructor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in the treatment of ADHD, executive functioning disorders, OCD, and issues faced by students with learning disorders. He serves on the Advisory Boards of ADDitude magazine as well as national ADHD organizations.

And coming soon to Roku and Firestick! The audio podcast of course remains available on most podcast channels.

Do you know your ADHD-related strengths? So many of the resources for ADHDers talk about strategies to address weaknesses in our ADHD function, “impairments” to work on, how to get ahead of our deficits. But we have strengths too, ways that our brains work which neurotypicals do not have.

Are you often frozen in perfectionism and/or shame which lead to one of the forms of procrastination? (*raises his hand...me*)

Can you recognize instances when boundaries on “want to” get in the way of “have to” and “need to” tasks/activities?

My guest today is Kristin Swanson, coach and consultant, expert in helping her clients how to get their “someday when I...” projects done. As a breast cancer survivor, Kristin learned the importance of getting out of one’s own way and how to stop waiting until “someday” to make a unique impact. Realizing deeply that “you only live once,” she has gained perspective, tools and strategies to overcome the illusions which fear instills in us.

Kristin earned a BA degree in business, received Co-Active Coaches Institute training, and has two decades of business leadership, strategy & operations experience. Learn more at https://www.kristinswansonconsulting.com. Download Kristin’s free Make it Happen Planner here.

ADHD Focus with David Pomeroy, MD - How to motivate your ADHD child (without using screen time!)
play

10/08/18 • 34 min

“It’s too hard!” “Why do I have to do this stupid book report? It’s dumb!”

“I finished it in school”...which you find out later is not the truth.

Have you heard this before, or something like it? Frustrating to say the least! For you, the teacher(s) and your child. My show today is about how to change the repeated failures into repeated successes.

Dr. Jerome Schultz is a neuropsychologist of 38 years’ experience who has developed a simple technique to turn this around. Simple but it does take effort and practice to make it work. You can do it! We discuss what is “behind the curtain”, why kids evade homework and hate school, how the brain differences in ADHD are a setup for failure if not recognized and an approach that works to develop successes leading to a Growth Mindset.

He outlines this approach in his book Nowhere to Hide: Why Kids with ADHD & LD Hate School and What We Can Do About It. He spends 2 days a week in schools working with teachers and students, consults with School Districts in the Boston area, and he writes articles in ADDitude magazine (additudemag.com) and blogs for Understood which is now at u.org. He walks the talk! Check those out, but right now listen and learn!

As a parent advocating for your ADHD/neurodivergent child at their school, have you found it difficult to jump through all the hoops required by our school systems in order to get help? If there was a way to develop and maintain a collaborative approach with your child’s teachers, with the goal of helping your child succeed in school, would you want to know how to do it? Great! You are in the right place! My guest Frances Coppa, an ADHD Coach, parent of a child with ADHD, a person with ADHD herself, a former SpEd teacher and school principal, has developed a model which leads parents and teachers through the process of working together in creating a supportive environment and structure to enable your child to succeed in school, not simply in academics but in the social aspects of personal development as well.

ADHD Focus with David Pomeroy, MD - Finish homework on time and stress-free? For real? Use studyzen™

Which assignment do I work on now? Which is more important? When is that one due? These are questions every High School and college student has to answer every day. What if there was an app that consolidated all of those answers into a single list “do these today” and completing that daily list resulted in all assignments done by the due date, even long-range ones? AND it included other activities like sports, clubs, family time!

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS

Thanks to Nathan Hanamaika’i, that app exists! While in grad school Dr. Nate had to figure out how to complete his doctoral studies, job tasks, home chores and include personal and family time with his wife and four children. He made a spreadsheet then combined it with a calendar of due dates. As he learned more about ADHD and the challenges students have with time management, he refined his system into a composite of all the activities and tasks to be done over the coming few months for school, job, rest/restore time, personal time, exercise, and whatever else, then distilled that into day-by-day segments. Just do everything on the list for that day and due dates will be met, appointments kept, family time enjoyed!

Studyzen personalizes that for each student, using input from student, parents, school and class schedules/assignments to create the daily task set unique for the needs of the student. No more worrying about which of 5 things to do first, or at all that day! Assignments, sports, clubs, refresh time – it is possible to track it and get it done step by step.

Studyzen is available at trystudyzen.com. Download iOS or Android version. Go for it!

Have you been asking yourself these questions: “The treatments we have been doing help but it’s still a struggle every day, is it this hard for all parents?” “We think there is more going on than just ADHD (or) Anxiety (or) Autism Spectrum issues, where can we find help to figure that out?” “I know the doctor is trying hard but something is missing.” Have these thoughts occurred to you about your child? You are not alone. As many as 80% (or more) of people with ADHD have another condition which impairs the lives of their parents/siblings/co-workers (or all of them) and of course their own experiences in navigating the demands and stresses of reaching adulthood.

My guest today is Elaine Taylor-Klaus, author, educator, Master coach, and parent in a family of 5 ADHD++ people (including herself). Born out of her frustration, curiosity and determination she co-founded IMPACTparents in 2011, providing parent coaching using an online group approach. This has since expanded to many educational and coaching programs for parents of complex kids. Check them out at www.IMPACTparents.com . Her latest book, The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids, outlines in detail the steps parents can take as they guide their child(ren) to self-management by the end of their teen years, regardless of how many “official” diagnoses they have. It is a superb resource, as are the parent coaching programs presented by IMPACTparents**.

Our discussion starts with the challenges of identifying girls with the Inattentive type of ADHD who are also on the Autism Spectrum, then branches into the areas of behavioral clues parents can identify which suggest that their child has more than just one thing going on, that it’s not just Anxiety, or ADHD, or incompetent kid, or intelligent but can’t fit in. We explore how parents can educate themselves in this area and also how they can offer information to clinicians who for many reasons have not diagnosed every condition present. There are no simple answers. You can learn what questions to ask and where to get help in parenting your child. Listen and learn!

**Please note: I do not receive any money from IMPACTparents in connection with mentioning the program on ADHD Focus . Dr. Pomeroy

If anyone had doubts about whether my guest or I have ADHD, in this episode of ADHD Focus we provided decisive proof that indeed we do. In a wide-ranging discussion we touched on girls/women with ADHD, student struggles with ADHD, the shame experienced by women with ADHD due to impossible-to-meet societal expectations of a woman, a housewife, a mother, and a person with a business – in any combination of those roles. And probably more...(I was in the moment, not taking (detailed) notes).

Pippa Simou has “lived experience” as the mother of an ADHD child and a woman surprised by her own “late diagnosis” of ADHD as an adult. The desire to help her son cope with his ADHD in every way possible led her to in-depth reading and inquiry about ADHD. She changed careers after teaching for 20 years to one of training teachers about ADHD and coaching other parents with ADHD children, after returning to school to get her Masters in Psychology degree. She is a coaching psychologist in London (yes, the London, the city in the UK), a coach/trainer, and is developing a unique program for mentoring young teen girls with ADHD, to “give them hope, to be the voice I wish I had heard”.

She is actively pursuing grants to fund research in ”proof of concept” for her mentoring program, the concept being that mentoring can prevent the painful “lived experience” girls with undiagnosed ADHD so commonly go through. [ If you have access to funds for this research, or know someone who does, please contact Pippa! ]
