Have you ever wondered with your child or a family member might have bipolar disorder, in addition to or instead of ADHD? Do the rages your child exhibits always represent bipolar disorder? This can be a difficult distinction to make for health care professionals and yet it is an important one to make, due to the serious nature of bipolar disorder. In today’s show my guest Dr. Robert Olivardio and I will discuss how parents and family members can provide information to the health care professionals they’re working with that can be very helpful in determining whether a bipolar disorder is present. Dr. Olivario is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Lexington Massachusetts and also a clinical instructor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in the treatment of ADHD, executive functioning disorders, OCD, and issues faced by students with learning disorders. He serves on the Advisory Boards of ADDitude magazine as well as national ADHD organizations.

Baking, get cards sent out, family dinners, Santa pictures, decorate the house, get the lights up, finish the costume for the play... presents? Oh no, I’ve got to get some for the kids to give to Aunt Gladys, and...and...and.... In one way or another most of us have been there. What are some things parents can do to create and celebrate family traditions, include their children in the planning and doing, and give themselves the gift of self-care along the way, so they can satisfy their desire to give their families a wonderful Holiday time? Listen as I talk with Elaine Taylor-Klaus, co-founder of IMPACTadhd, an online parent training and coaching program for parents of complex kids, and co-author of the recently released book Parenting ADHD Now. We discuss how to stay mindful of celebrating holiday time, not just getting through it. And if it has been a struggle this year, take heart, next year can be better !

Outside the Box, Dr. Brown’s fifth book, is a comprehensive explanation of ADHD and how it intersects with its co-occurring disorders – Anxiety, Depression, Emotional Dysregulation, and time blindness to name a few. The latter two are not separate disorders but IMO they are the most impairing qualities of ADHD. Read, listen, and learn!

And coming soon to Roku and Firestick! The audio podcast of course remains available on most podcast channels.

Do you know your ADHD-related strengths? So many of the resources for ADHDers talk about strategies to address weaknesses in our ADHD function, “impairments” to work on, how to get ahead of our deficits. But we have strengths too, ways that our brains work which neurotypicals do not have.

Are you often frozen in perfectionism and/or shame which lead to one of the forms of procrastination? (*raises his hand...me*)

Can you recognize instances when boundaries on “want to” get in the way of “have to” and “need to” tasks/activities?

My guest today is Kristin Swanson, coach and consultant, expert in helping her clients how to get their “someday when I...” projects done. As a breast cancer survivor, Kristin learned the importance of getting out of one’s own way and how to stop waiting until “someday” to make a unique impact. Realizing deeply that “you only live once,” she has gained perspective, tools and strategies to overcome the illusions which fear instills in us.

Kristin earned a BA degree in business, received Co-Active Coaches Institute training, and has two decades of business leadership, strategy & operations experience. Learn more at https://www.kristinswansonconsulting.com. Download Kristin’s free Make it Happen Planner here.

Girls and ADHD

ADHD often shows up differently in girls than it does in boys. Usually. How? What factors indicate higher risk outcomes for girls? Consequences of undiagnosed ADHD in girls are much more severe overall, especially in teen years – cutting, depression, anxiety, suicidal thinking, eating disorders. Higher risk for these are 4: Combined Type ADHD, impaired family dynamics, poor peer acceptance and past abuse -physical, sexual and/or emotional neglect.

These topics I discussed with my guest today, Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Francisco and Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley. He has written and co-authored numerous books, among them Another Kind of Madness: A Journey Through the Stigma and Hope of Mental Illness in 2017 and The ADHD Explosion in 2014 with Richard Sheffler. He directs the Berkeley Girls with ADHD Longitudinal Study which began in 2003 and continues. His website is www.stephenhinshawauthor.com.
