A Sunny Side Up Life Podcast

What if your heart is for adoption, but your budget is not?

Heather Marshall and her husband were in the same boat about 10 years ago, but now they are the proud parents of two beautiful adopted children. Now Heather encourages other to-be-adoptive parents that money shouldn’t have to hold you back from the dream of growing your family.

In this episode, she breaks down all of the different types of adoption, what kinds of costs you can expect to pay, and all of the ways to get help if you can’t fund the adoption alone. She also passes along encouragement to other women who have their own passion project calling their name.

IN THIS EPISODE, SAMI + HEATHER CHAT ABOUT:
  • How her heart changed from not wanting kids to adopting two
  • The role that money played in her adoption journey
  • How much adoption really costs
  • The various ways to fund an adoption
  • Various types of adoption (private agency, international adoption, independent, foster care, and special needs.)
  • Open vs. Closed adoption
  • Advice for future adoptive parents
  • Words of encouragement for women wanting to pursue their dreams.
RESOURCES MENTIONED: MEET OUR GUEST

Heather Marshall is a wife to an amazing husband of almost 25 years, a mom to 2 of the best little kiddos ever, and a passionate adoption advocate. After going through the adoption process twice, Heather started a blog in 2019 to share adoption encouragement and resources. She was soon encouraged to write an eBook to help others. With the theme of affording adoption coming up often, she decided this was the topic to focus on. If you or someone you know is embarking on an adoption journey, read on to learn just how possible funding your adoption can be.

EP. 75 Why True Success Requires Wholeheartedness

Brene Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability is another book you should add to your personal-development reading list. The foundation of the book was based around Brene’s 10 Guideposts for Wholehearted Living, all of which can easily be implied to our financial success or even to just our personal success.

In this episode, I’m sharing my favorite takeaways + lessons from the book, as well as several examples of how you can start applying the 10 Guideposts to your own life to achieve all of your goals + desires.

IN THIS EPISODE, SAMI SHARES ABOUT:
  • My biggest takeaways from The Power of Vulnerability by Brene Brown
  • How Brene’s teachings can be applied to your Debt-Free Journey or financial success
  • Vulnerability is defined as the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
  • Success is defined as a person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity; accomplishment of purpose
  • Brene Brown’s 10 Guideposts for Wholehearted Living are as follows:
    1. Cultivating Authenticity and Letting Go of What Other People Think
    2. Cultivating Self-Compassion and Letting Go of Perfectionism
    3. Cultivating Your Resilient Spirit, Letting Go of Numbing and Powerlessness
    4. Cultivating Gratitude and Joy, Letting go of Scarcity and Fear of the Dark
    5. Cultivating Intuition and Trusting Faith, Letting Go of the Need for Certainty
    6. Cultivating Creativity and Letting Go of Comparison
    7. Cultivating Play and Rest, Letting Go of Exhaustion as a Status Symbol and Productivity as Self-Worth
    8. Cultivating Calm and Stillness and Letting Go of Anxiety as a Lifestyle
    9. Cultivating Meaningful Work, Letting Go of Self-Doubt and Supposed-To
    10. Cultivating Laughter, Song, and Dance. And Letting Go of Cool and Always in Control
  • Shame (I am bad) vs. Guilt (I did something bad)
  • Shame triggers are prerequisites for worthiness
  • Shame reliance is owning our stories
  • People who are reliant to shame...
    • They know what shame is and they know why they’re in it
    • They can reality check around the expectations
    • They reach out to others
    • They speak shame/call it what it is
  • Numbing is like a turtle without a shell living in a briar patch
  • Instead of learning how to live in the chaos, examine why you’re living there at all
  • When numbing...
    • Whole-hearted people: reduce what is driving the need to numb
    • Others: Keep living how they’re living and look to just stop the numbing
  • “How can you enjoy the peach if you don’t enjoy a bite of the peach?” -Brene Brown
  • “It’s not enough to have an attitude of gratitude, you have to practice it.” -Brene Brown
  • “The opposite of play isn’t rest, the opposite of play is depression.” -Brene Brown
