Healing the Psyche with Chinese Herbs with Justin Ehrlich

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity, you’ll learn about:

  • Chinese medicine on a physical and spiritual level
  • How herbs channel energy and open our perspective
  • Herbs for personal cultivation
  • Cleansing wounds and resolving trauma

Drawn to many of the mystical practices that originated in ancient China for most of my life, Justin has been a California state licensed acupuncturist since 2002 and a student of the Jade Purity branch of Daoism since 2001.

After many years of questioning the nature of reality, and using these practices to work through his own struggles, heal old wounds, and find a deeper connection to the Divine, he's personally seen just how powerful and transformative this path can be.

Justin has studied a multitude of practices, including medicines, meditation, philosophy, mindfulness-based practices, and religion. He implements these practically as a coach and Chinese medicine practitioner.

Chemotherapy has been described as one of the most traumatic and difficult treatments one can go through. But unfortunately, in this toxic world we live in, there’s a good chance that most of us will know someone personally who has to go through chemotherapy. “I think that when you are undergoing care for something as complex as cancer, you need to be able to differentiate what parts of the recommended treatment are for you, when you want to seek a second opinion and how you can become the most empowered advocate for yourself.” – Carol Lourie

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Types of support available to those with breast or ovarian cancer.
  • A person with cancer is not a “patient”.

A Healthy Curiosity - GABA for Sleep, Anxiety, and Pain with Beverly Meyer
play

10/04/17 • 44 min

Beverly Meyer is a practitioner, podcaster, and blogger who, like so many of us, have struggled with her own health issues early in life. In her college years, Beverly contracted herpes and she was disappointed at what was conventionally known at the time. She sought other doctors, received natural and conservative treatment, and she was able to at least suppress its symptoms. She has since become an advocate for alternative medicine and has established herself as a household name in the Paleo world.

In today’s episode, Beverly shares her learning experience and why she had an interest to research GABA. She also explains why she calls GABA the “forgotten neurotransmitter” and what you can do to determine if you’re low in GABA and how to improve your levels.

“GABA is that neurotransmitter that's keeping things at a stable, steady pattern.” – Beverly Meyer

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • The four main neurotransmitters in the body.
  • How seizures are linked to GABA.
  • GABA's main roles in the body.
  • Does GABA get depleted and can it be increased through our diet?
  • Why she tells her clients to remove gluten in their diet.
  • Her favorite sleep trick.
  • GABA sources she recommends.
  • What is "leaky brain"?
  • Her thoughts on seeing traditional doctors.

Key Takeaway:

  • People have to be willing to speak up and acknowledge that they deserve better doctors.
  • The problem is human life right now revolves around stress. Our rational minds are swamped with irrational events that we can't place in a rational system.
  • Every cell in your body is programed to win, to live, and to do its job perfectly. We don't have to make things happen, our job is to let things happen.

A Healthy Curiosity - Is Addiction a Disease?

Is Addiction a Disease?

A Healthy Curiosity

play

11/18/20 • 38 min

In a time when a lot of us are dealing with strong, difficult emotions, it can be easy to slip into bad patterns to try and cope and these patterns can spiral to harmful levels and addiction. On top of that, some of the most popular addiction treatments often end up reinforcing the idea that someone's identity is "addict" which only serves to feed the pattern.

Michelle Dunbar has a different way of looking at addiction. Through the framework she helped to develop, Michelle and her team empower people struggling with addiction to change the trajectory of their lives rather than giving the power to substances and bad habits.

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • What addiction means in the context of Michelle’s work
  • How her own experiences and those of other family members led her toward the framework she developed
  • The three distinct components of The Freedom Model
  • Why she says the opposite of addiction is diversification
  • What has surprised her along her career of helping people with addiction

Michelle Dunbar is the co-author of The Freedom Model for Addictions: Escape the Treatment and Recovery Trap and The Freedom Model for the Family. She is also Executive Director of Baldwin Research Institute, Inc., and The Saint Jude Retreats, not-for-profit research organizations with the mission to change the way people with substance use problems are helped worldwide. Michelle has been helping people move beyond addiction for over 30 years.
