Not weird, just autistic....with J.R. Reed

J. R. Reed has some great ways of helping us learn and understand about being neurodiverse. Based in Missouri, USA J.R. is an autism self advocate, writer, speaker and consultant who growing up was described as weird, stupid and lazy.
A later in life diagnosis has helped him and others understand that his brain is just a bit different. A Mac in a PC world. A different operating system is a good way to think about it. We have always preferred Mac’s here at the Culture Ministry ;)

Some great takeaways from J.R. including that many people are disabled by the environment but can function perfectly well when the environment is suited to them. Workplaces can help people on the autism spectrum by having quiet spaces to work, reducing bright lights and not requiring eye contact, as examples.

J.R. works with companies, groups. and families to educate, create an accepting culture, and help those with autism lead happy, fulfilling lives

Creating diverse characters….with Vanessa Laguerre

At her heart Vanessa is a storyteller. She has done many types of writing, from poems, songs, and short stories to news articles, blog posts, copywriting, and even scriptwriting. Her favourite, however, has always been writing stories where she gets to create new worlds, getting to know her sassy characters, going on epic adventures, and seeing good triumph over evil.

Vanessa also has some disabilities and uses her lived experience and love of writing to help other writers create meaningful characters with disabilities that don’t add to the damaging messages about disability out in the world
Listen in to hear how Vanessa is making her part of the world more inclusive.
