The Joy of Membership Podcast

The Joy of Membership Podcast

Joy Duling

Most membership organizations -want- to be using best practices for membership growth and member care... but best practices are often easier said than done. There are practical realities that get in the way... too little time, not enough staff, a board that doesn't "get it", or even chapter leaders that go rogue. There’s no shortage of advice out there on best practices in membership. What WE need to talk about is how to actually make those things possible in the real world... how to be absolutely sure that growth practices are going to stick... how to make those things easier, more consistent, and even done automatically in many cases. So that’s what we talk about here, not just WHAT to do to grow membership, but HOW to actually make it all possible. If that sounds of interest, stick around. I'll be here most Tuesday mornings and welcome you to join me.

The Joy of Membership Podcast - Helpful Through Family Ties: GU272 Descendants Association
play

08/18/20 • 16 min

One of my personal goals as I created this podcast format was to bring forward stories of value being created by mission-driven organizations covering a diverse array of topic areas, membership sizes and types, geographic location, and length of service. As part of this podcast, you’ll hear from organizations that have been working toward their mission for decades, but you’ll also hear from some that are very new.

That’s the situation today. The GU272 Descendants Association is very new as a formal association, but their mission and the impact of their work? .... Well, that spans generations.

Join me for this conversation with Rochell Sanders Prater, the association’s Vice President of Membership.

Have you ever heard the phrase “sacred cow”? In a business context, a sacred cow refers to an idea, custom, or belief that an organization resists questioning or criticizing. Sometimes holding onto such ideas without questioning them can hold an organization back from being able to create change that is necessary to survival.

Today’s guest is Dr. Stephan Meyer who received his PhD last November for his research into sacred cows and organizations, but he’s actually been working on change-related projects in his career for more than 25 years. In a world now where every organization is trying to find a new path forward, it seemed like the perfect time for this conversation with Stephan. I hope you enjoy listening in.

The Joy of Membership Podcast - Helpful through Certification: Register of Professional Archaeologists
play

10/29/20 • 20 min

Dr. Deb Rotman has been an active teacher, scholar, and practitioner of archaeology for more than 25 years and has a broad knowledge of both academic archaeology and CRM. When she joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 2006, Deb wanted to understand how a university with a French name became the Fighting Irish. Answering this question became the focus of her research on Irish immigration in both the US and Ireland. In 2015-2016, Deb was a Fulbright US Scholar to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Castlebar, County Mayo, where she lectured and researched the lifeways and cultural practices of rural Irish-Catholics before they emigrated to the US. Recently, Deb became the Executive Director of the Register of Professional Archaeologists where she facilitates the certification and professional development of practicing archaeologists in the US and internationally.

Abhay Khurana is a marketing professional, podcast host, and father of five. As the Chief Marketing Officer of Feathr – a marketing technology company that specializes in working with associations – he leads the content, creative, partnerships, and demand generation functions of Feathr's business.

I started seeing Feathr pop up more over the past year in the discussion forums for the American Society of Association Executives, then one day an email popped into my inbox that sparked this collaboration.

This week’s conversation will be with Abhay, but then next week, you’ll hear the story of one of Feathr’s customers, the California Pharmacists Association and what they’ve been able to do to enhance their outreach with this digital marketing platform.

I hope you enjoy this quick introduction to Abhay and the work that he’s doing to help associations at Feathr.

As a nurse, Heather has always had an affection for helping others. She combined her passion for nursing to help the aging population with her 1st company Everyday Divinity by delivering routine foot care services to seniors. Now she is building a community of nurses who help seniors in the same way - by starting and growing their own foot care businesses. Using JourneyCARE, Heather has been able to automate many of the processes that she needs to successfully run her membership and warmly engage those she aims to attract.Connect with Heather:
