1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #013: Harry Shotta
play

09/11/23 • 82 min

For our latest deep and meaningful conversation in the world of bass music 1 More Thing welcomes a record breaking barsmith... Harry Shotta.
Renowned for his turbo-charged double-time lyrical craftmanship, and his infectious enthusiasm and positive attitude, Harry has been devouring hip-hop since the age of 6 and describes himself as a lifelong student of rap culture.
Still just as inspired by the music today, Harry has been at the forefront of UK MC culture since he broke through in the mid 2000s. Bringing his hip-hop roots to drum & bass, his CV is a litany of trailblazing projects both as a solo artist and as a key member of iconic outfits such as The Uncontrollablez, SASASAS and his most recent project Road Block.
Wrapping up our trilogy of MC-focused interviews to mark the recent 50 year hip-hop celebrations in NYC last month, Harry sits down with Dave Columbo Jenkins to chat about his roots and upbringing, his love for collaborations, the legacy and influence of the late, great Skibadee and so much more.
As always, this is a super inspiring conversation that provides a rare insight into the life of a disciplined artist who's devoted their life to their craft and set incredible benchmarks for the scene. Enjoy!

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #005: J:Kenzo
play

02/09/23 • 82 min

For the latest 1 More Thing podcast we join the dots between dubstep, garage and drum & bass with an original UK article... J:Kenzo.
The son of a DJ, brought up amid a rich culture of vinyl and digging, Kenzo's musical inspirations go back as far as he can possibly remember but truly took root when he first heard jungle in the mid 90s... And consequently blossomed when he first became a DJ in the late 90s.
On a mission to "play music for the people", J traversed the worlds of garage and drum & bass playing up and down the UK before being bitten by the then-burgeoning dubstep movement the mid 2000s and becoming part of the genre's earliest generations of pioneers, pushers and protagonists.
Gradually honing his minimal signature, Kenzo became one of the most consistent artists in dubstep from the late 2000s onwards. With his weekly radio show on Rinse and releases on key labels such as Tempa and Dub Police, J:Kenzo became a key player in dubstep's international explosion and found himself at the forefront of the US exodus as the genre rocketed to unparalleled EDM levels.
Dubstep's underground credibility was compromised during this point, but Kenzo maintained his own rep and stayed dedicated to minimal heavyweight dub-wise music.
One of the few first-wave artists who didn't leave the genre at the time, J:Kenzo was part of a movement of ardent dubstep craftsmen who helped to maintain the genre's deep roots and powerful cultural values. Staying true to the deeper side of the genre, he found space to encourage and champion like-minded leftfield dubstep artists on his label Artikal Music and bring in other elements and influences in his own productions... Including his original passion for jungle and drum & bass.
As dubstep has found its original foundation spirit once more, and started to develop a flourishing new generation of artists and fans, J:Kenzo remains on the forefront as relevant and inspired as he was back in the mid 2000s. Only now he has a whole other depth and duality to his output as he also runs a fine line in jungle records.
Chatting to 1 More Thing's Dave Columbo Jenkins on the eve of his release on Goldie's Metalheadz (a label he's coveted since his teens and never thought he'd release on) J:Kenzo takes the time to tell his story with more depth and detail than any other interview he's done before.
Enjoy!

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #010: Riya
play

07/13/23 • 62 min

🎤 Next up in our series of deep discussions: Riya! 🎤
One of the hardest working, most dedicated and passionate artists you could ever wish to meet in drum & bass, Riya has been deeeeeeeeeeeeeep in the craft for longer than you may know.
From her earliest manoeouvres behind the scenes as a PR at labels such as C.I.A and Hospital and working at the iconic forum Dogs On Acid, Laura Pacheco's fingerprints have been all over the scene for the best part of 20 years.
As Riya she's been at the very forefront of the genre since 2009 working with some of the most respected names in the game, honing her craft as a songwriter and fighting for a valid space in a scene that hasn't always been particularly warm to crediting vocalists or welcoming to women.
The first vocalist in drum & bass to develop their own hybrid style of DJ/vocal set - an artform which is now common place and currently thriving - Riya has truly smashed down barriers. And continues to do so to this day...
Currently running Carnelian Music alongside her equally inspiring kindred spirit Collette Warren, Riya remains at the very forefront of the genre, fighting to create new space and opportunities for songwriters and vocalists within the scene.
Join Dave Columbo Jenkins as he asks Riya about her journey so far, her influences, upbringing, the art of songwriting and the challenges she's consistently risen to.
Big shouts to Euphonique for letting us use her studio to record this!
Riya & Collette Warren Feat Koherent - Carnelian (Phaction Remix) is out Friday July 14: https://lnk.to/CARNEL011

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #017: Mandidextrous
play

01/23/24 • 95 min

Welcome to the first 1 More Thing podcast of 2024!
We are kicking off the year in fine style as Dave Columbo Jenkins is joined by the one and only Mandidextrous for an epic and inspiring deep dive into their career so far.
From their free party roots to their current status as one of the most unique individuals in drum & bass culture, Mandi chats in detail about their development from being entrenched in underground DIY culture to becoming a pioneer of their own sounds Jungle Tek and Speed Bass... Two 4x4 sounds that have had a game-changing influence on drum & bass in very recent times.
Smashing down boundaries and barriers, and setting benchmarks for fellow non binary artists, Mandidextrous has had one of the most positive impacts on drum & bass culture imaginable.... And is definitely showing no signs of slowing down.
We caught up with them at the end of 2023 just days after they won the Critics Choice Award at the Drum&BassArena Awards but before the awards show had gone live. FYI: we reckon Mandi's going to have an even bigger 2024.
Listen in and find out why...

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #016: DLR
play

12/01/23 • 85 min

Unapologetically long-form chats with unapologetically inspiring artists! The 1 More Thing podcast series continues with a certified drum & bass maverick - DLR.
From his early days breaking through with Octane to his current position as the Sofa Sound bossman, DLR has been committed to the cause with pure unabashed energy and intensity for for his whole adult life.
Fresh from releasing his third solo album Money Till I Got None, DLR is an artist at the forefront of his very own lane with his own unique signature sound. He is a proud professor of the process and a huge advocate for realism, authenticity and progression. The very same ethics 1 More Thing is built on and that drive and inspire our interviewer Dave Columbo Jenkins.
So much so, in fact, the interview starts with a stark and daring confession from Dave as he ignites the chat and explosive revelation from an interview he did with DLR over 10 years ago!
We love every interview we put out into the world and feel there's a powerful amount of inspiration to be found in ANY artist's story but this one is especially loaded thanks to DLR's depth of self reflection and tenure in the game.
Essential listening. Find your nearest sofa and get comfortable.

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #015: DJ Hybrid
play

11/08/23 • 87 min

Meet the artist who's often refered to as one of the hardest working men in drum & bass... DJ, producer, multiple label owner, verified one-man-army and a man who's been influential in the emergence of a whole generation of artists; it's DJ Hybrid.
He joins 1 More Thing host Dave Columbo Jenkins this month to discuss his musical roots, his insatiable creative urge, the challenges he's had to overcome and the sacrifices he's made to get to where he wants to be.
With 2023 being one of his most prolific years, it's fair to say his hard work is paying off. It's a really exciting time for the Coventry-born/Worthing-based artist as he continues to stretch his legs stylistically, working with bucketlist labels like RAM and DRKMTTR, hosting his own show on Kool FM and forever helping the new generation with unfailing support on his imprints Audio Addict and Deep In The Jungle.
As Deep In The Jungle has just celebrated 10 years, it's the perfect time for Alex Hybrid to reflect on his journey so far and give us a hint at what comes next.

1 More Thing - 1 More Thing Podcast #019: CLIQUES
play

04/03/24 • 63 min

The Podcast Experiences Of... CLIQUES
Welcome to the 19th episode of the 1 More Thing Podcast where Dave Columbo Jenkins sits down with an act who have, until recently, have maintained a strong air of masked anonymity.
Emerging in 2020 with a brazen sonic style, a production level that belies their newcomer status and a strong connection with cult retro soap opera character Barry Evans, CLIQUES have done things entirely on their own terms.
Carving their own unique place with a technique they describe as renegade art, the UK south coast trio have commandeered every subgenre of drum & bass, avoiding pigeonholes and landing them on labels such as Hospital, Breakbeat Kaos, Get Hype, Ram, their own imprint CCA and, most recently, Born On Road - Buried, featuring Eksman.
It was their previous EP however that set the scene for this podcast interview. Entitled Life Experiences Of, the EP features Genesis Elijah, Grim Sickers, Vio.let, LU:KE and Sammy Sapphire and was created in collaboration with CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) It comes with a powerful message that taps into some of their lowest and most vulnerable emotional experiences. It doesn't matter how low you feel, you can still get back up on top and there will always be help no matter how dark things feel.
A one-of-a-kind body of work in drum & bass and a release that reveals them on a whole new personable level, Paul and Phil CLIQUES embraced this special moment last month and take part in this, their deepest interview of their career so far. Enjoy.
