Project to product with Mik Kersten
0800-DEVOPS
03/28/21 • 30 min
I’ve heard rants before (mostly from my friend Davor Čengija) how projects suck and how they result in The Inverse Boy Scout Rule – they leave the product in worse condition than they found it in.
But it wasn’t until I heard Mik Kersten‘s talk on DOES 2020 and read his book that I really understood the reasoning behind it. Mik has a lot of experience in delivering software as well as in leadership positions. Precisely this experience made him realize that there’s something wrong with the way we deliver software. Local optimizations and the lack of end-to-end value stream visibility caused many successful organizations to go under. Pair that with a traditional (but still present) mindset that IT is a cost center, and you are truly set for a disaster in today’s economy.
I spoke with Mik about problems in software delivery today and the disconnect between the Business and the IT that many organizations experience.

Talking about value with Kelsey Hightower
0800-DEVOPS
05/22/23 • 36 min
Kelsey Hightower is a pragmatic person, in love with technology but never forgetting that technology should always be in the service of humankind. His rational view on the business-technology interplay and scrutinizing approach to finding value in technology restore sanity in this crazy world often driven solely by technology hype cycles. His ability to dissect business problems and break them down to technology fundamentals never ceases to amaze me. We talked about different perspectives of value, how to approach the ever-changing technical landscape, why it is essential to master technical fundamentals, and much more.

A career in tech is about the willingness to learn a different tool when the time comes

Mish Middelmann is certified leadership and systemic team coach. Mish is a part of Organisation and Relationship Systems Coaching network (better known as ORSC) and he spent a great weekend with my group teaching us how to apply ORSC principles to our daily work. I stole some of his time to talk about systemic coaching in tech organizations.
And I learned a valuable lesson – never do an interview with a coach – for every question you throw at them, they will respond with two for you 🙂

AI Platform Engineering with Patrick Debois
0800-DEVOPS
07/08/24 • 31 min
You know how in every good movie, it takes some time for a plot to develops, and the main character is introduced only later in the movie... We’ll that’s why it took me 43 episodes of the DevOps podcast to welcome a person that started it all! I talked with Patrick Debois about challenges of introducing Generative AI and how can AI Platform Engineering help.
Platform Engineering is the pattern that successful organizations use to efficiently scale the approach, the technology, and ways of working. Yesterday, it was about building abstractions to deploy and manage apps on Kubernetes. Today, it is also about providing access to approved LLM models, RAG mechanisms, vector databases, caching, model versioning, and connectors to legacy data sources, hence AI Platform Engineering.

Auditing with agility with Clarissa Lucas
0800-DEVOPS
03/25/23 • 39 min
Clarissa Lucas is IT Audit Director, speaker, and book author. I loved talking to her because, for most of my professional career, I was dealing with the technical aspects of delivering software solutions. And I remember many times I was freaking out because I saw that "we", the technical people, and "they", the non-technical people, were not aligned on how we delivered software. Clarissa comes from that other side of the fence and is working hard to achieve the alignment of delivery and audit. We talked about auditing with agility and tearing down the fence between delivery teams and auditors.

(6:37)
"The greatest technologists in the world that I know have all done some time as managers. They all have that skill set. But they are never too far away, never too many years removed from being an IC themselves, because there is wisdom you get from dealing with the technology that you can't get from sitting several layers away."
(11:55)
"As a manager, you can't make decisions in a vacuum the way you could as an engineer. There is no such thing as a good decision independent of other people because all decisions involve other people."
(18:14)
"Engineers don't typically go, "I'm done with coding forever. I wanna be a manager ". They want to try things. They want to go back and forth. Most organizations haven't figured out how to incentivize this or how to support people in doing it."
(18:55)
"You want to optimize not for people becoming more powerful in one role but for them staying curious and engaged."
(23:10)
"Management is just a bunch of skills. People don't have to become managers in order to learn those skills."
(25:35)
"People should have some agency in what team they want to go to."
(29:55)
"Platform Engineering is a form of operationally focused software engineering where your customers are internal instead of external."
(31:20)
"You give them all these tools so they can own their own code in production, not so you can own it for them."
(34:52)
"The experience of running software is one that has been consistently devalued and marginalized when it comes to software engineering teams. They typically don't give enough respect to just how difficult and traumatic it can be. There is a sense you get from having run big complex systems for a long time. You can sense where the holes are."
