Welcome, nature lovers, to the home of the Terrestrials podcast and family-friendly Radiolab episodes about nature. Every other week, host Lulu Miller will take you on a nature walk to encounter a plant or animal behaving in ways that will surprise you. Squirrels that can regrow their brains, octopuses that can outsmart their human captors, honeybees that can predict the future. You don’t have to be a kid to listen, just someone who likes to see the world anew. You’ll hear a range of nature stories on this podcast. Sometimes these will be brand new Terrestrials episodes, full of original songs (by “The Songbud” Alan Goffinski) that tell a fantastical-sounding story about nature that is 100% true. Sometimes these will be our very best, shiniest, furriest, leafiest Radiolab episodes about animals or plants or nature. The stories that drop here will always be family-friendly and safe for kids. They will always be sound-rich and full of the vivid, gripping storytelling you’ve come to expect from Radiolab. They will always transport you to the beyond-human world: into the depths of the ocean, into jungles, prairies, forests, space, snow, wildflower fields and beyond. Sometimes we’ll encounter something so wild we just have to break out into song about it! Don’t worry, good voices not required. Join us on this adventure!

As children, our first experience of the magic of talking animals, the conflict between good and evil, the battle of wits between the cunning and the innocent most probably came from Aesop's Fables. These delightful, pithy and brief narratives are simple, easy to understand and convey their message in a memorable and charming fashion. Aesop's Fables by Aesop consists of about 600 tales, some well-loved and familiar, others less known but just as entertaining and educative and help us map the perimeters of our moral universe. Fables have existed almost since the dawn of time. They hark back to a time when humans and animals lived in harmony and mutual respect. We humans could learn a great deal from the uncomplicated justice and the commonsense values of the animal kingdom. Animals are endowed with immutable personal traits like foxes being cunning, donkeys being patient, lions being proud and wolves being cruel. There is very little biographical information about Aesop. He is reputed to have been born a slave in Samos in ancient Greece in about 600 BC. He earned his liberty through his learning and wit and went on to become a respected diplomat and traveler. Ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle, historians like Plutarch and Herodotus mention Aesop's fables in their works. Today, these immortal fables have come down to us, as fresh and pristine as they were when they were first told. Aesop's fables were known at the time of Socrates in the 5th century BC, when they were recounted in oral form. However, they were systematically compiled sometime in 300 BC by a Greek philosopher Demetrius Phalereus. The fables gradually vanished from popular literature till the 14th century AD when they re-surfaced in Byzantine Constantinople. Since then, they traversed with traders and diplomats to Europe and then to the rest of the world. Generations of children have enjoyed old favorites like The Ant and the Grasshopper, The Bear and Two Travelers, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Hen who laid Golden Eggs, The Thirsty Crow, The Lion and the Mouse and many others found in this volume along with less familiar ones. Their charm lies in their simplicity and the plain, straightforward way in which they deliver universal values of honesty, compassion and justice and teach us to shun pride, greed, envy and other negative qualities. They provide an enduring foundation for inculcating values and ethics in children and are at the same time, amusing and entertaining.

A podcast from World Animal Protection

Animals Are Calling is a powerful podcast by World Animal Protection that explores the deep connection between animals, people, and the planet. Across two seasons, we uncover the often hidden impacts of human activities on animals, shedding light on the complex emotions they experience, from pain to joy, and exposing the systems that contribute to their suffering. Through expert discussions, real-world stories, and scientific insights, we aim to inspire change and offer practical solutions for a kinder, more compassionate world.

Season One: Exposing Systems of Cruelty

In season one, host Carly Squires is joined by a panel of experts from World Animal Protection to address some of the biggest issues affecting animals today. From global pandemics to the climate crisis, we hold the systems behind animal cruelty accountable, revealing the ways in which industrial practices and environmental destruction harm not only animals but people and the planet as well. Each episode uncovers the root causes of animal suffering and offers actionable steps for how we can work together to dismantle these harmful systems and build a better future.

Season Two: Understanding Animal Sentience and Taking Action

Season two expands the conversation to focus on the deeper meaning of animal sentience and its far-reaching implications. Featuring voices from around the globe, we explore how factory farming, wildlife exploitation, and habitat loss directly affect individual animals, while also examining the science behind their emotions. Contributors share how learning about animal sentience has transformed their lives, businesses, and practices, highlighting what still needs to be done to end cruelty and suffering on a global scale. This season empowers listeners with the knowledge and tools to take meaningful action in their daily lives.

Season You:

Animals Are Calling challenges listeners to not only understand the suffering animals face but to become part of the solution. By shedding light on the systems of cruelty and the science of sentience, we offer a roadmap for ending animal suffering once and for all. Together, we can change the way the world works to protect animals and the planet we all share.

Short and simple stories told with a little help from the little ones
Pet Pulse is the news source for animal lovers, which takes an in-depth look at the issues facing the $43 billion a year industry of domestic pets. It's pet news, but it's no joke and not a lot of fluff. Our stories are comprehensive, engaging and thought provoking. They not only catch people's attention but give the viewer the knowledge to act if they want to make a difference. It's not just about reporting the issues as news, but about taking a closer look at the implications that the issue will have upon animals, pet owners and the industry at large. We are not activists or advocates. We are simply story tellers conveying the tales of animals. To that end, every story will have an element of reporting from the animal's perspective. Pet Pulse operates online, a medium that has changed the game of how news is received and delivered. Our viewers and readers are a dynamic component of our news organization. They provide instantaneous feedback on our stories and will not hesitate to point out when we have not answered the key questions. Ultimately, this pushes us to be better journalists. Getting the story right has never counted as much as it does here. Reporting for Pet Pulse brings an opportunity to sharpen investigative and enterprise news skills. We believe Pet Pulse is at the forefront of how news will be delivered in the future -- informative, relevant and targeted to an audience who truly cares.

Lesbian mother, writer and internet geek, Josie Henley-Einion talks about life, the universe and everything. An audio blog which leads to a publishing contract. Some of the episodes have explicit content. Note, although I have added ‘knitting’ to the title of the podcast, I have only been talking about knitting since around episode 18, although I’ve been knitting since I was tiny. So if you’re looking particularly for knitting content, no need to listen to the archive, but if you want some interesting and literary content to listen to *while* you’re knitting then go ahead and download the archive!
