This audio, recorded in July 2009 at the Social History of Learning Disability Conference at The Open University, features people with learning disabilities sharing their experiences first-hand with historians and social researchers on equal terms. The significance of capturing real-life stories through oral history is described by one academic contributor as a way of showing people ‘not as victims but as survivors’, while for another it ‘opens your eyes to corners of social life’. Featuring Professor Dorothy Atkinson of The Open University based Learning Disability History Research Group.

A teacher or parent who wants to know what's going on in child development research? or maybe a neurodivergent adult reflecting on their youth? If so, welcome to our podcast! We hope these bite-sized, guided tours of recent research papers - via an informal chat with the author - will interest and inform you. The podcast is currently hosted by Louisa (Lou) Thomas, a postdoctoral research assistant in the Centre for Autism at the University of Reading. Each episode is a conversation between Lou, and a fellow academic. Together we discuss one of their recent (or classic) papers relating to child and adolescent development and learning. Welcome! I'm Mindy Henderson, motivational speaker, author and coach. Living life from a wheelchair, surviving 2 devastating car crashes, lost jobs, and a host of other challenges, I have learned to navigate the curve-balls life throws at us, and now, my mission is to bring positivity to the world, to teach others how to navigate adversity well, to stop making excuses, and to see all they are truly capable of. Because...the truth about things that suck, is that...they suck. They won’t be fun, but it’s possible to have two truths that coexist at the same time...the 2nd truth is that there is a lot we can learn, a lot we can do and a lot of gifts that the sucky things bring to our lives and that empower us to make the world better. This podcast is a tool I’ve created to help us uncover those sucky, but surprisingly beautiful circumstances.

Mackenzie Beauvais-Nikl, the co-host of "Everybody In," experiences autism. But this podcast isn't really about that, exactly. This podcast is about conversations and connections. It's about how we are the same, and how we're different. For each episode, Mackenzie and her co-host Andrea Moore interview a different guest. Some of their guests experience intellectual and developmental disabilities, also known as I/DD, and some don't. They talk about friendship, family, adulthood, and -- when it comes up -- disability. The podcast is called "Everybody In" because they are so interested in... EVERYBODY.

The format of each episode alternates depending on who leads the interview. Mackenzie interviews guests who identify as neurotypical, meaning that they don't have a diagnosed intellectual or developmental disability. Mackenzie asks her guest the same two questions each time, and then her guest gets to surprise her with two questions of their own. Together they go back-and-forth, getting to know each other better.

Andrea interviews guests with disabilities. Her guests might experience Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, fragile X, or other developmental or genetic differences. Andrea asks them a series of questions about friendship, disability, housing, transportation, love and romance, and their special gifts. At the end of the interview, the guest has an opportunity to ask Andrea or Mackenzie any questions in return.

In every episode, Mackenzie and Andrea work together to bridge any gaps, ask follow-up questions, and keep the party rolling!

Transcriptions available. Email [email protected].

“Everybody In" is conceived and produced by The Wayfaring Band, a Denver-based 501(c)3 nonprofit. The Wayfaring Band is not a rock-and-roll band, but a band of travelers. They create opportunities for people to increase their leadership and life skills through travel, serving adults with and without disabilities.

Heavy on the sarcasm, Bad Attitudes explores the reality of being disabled, how non-disabled people can become better advocates and allies, disability representation in pop culture, and the ways in which disability permeates society. Young or sensitive ears beware. N (always) SFW.
