The best podcasts about Mental Health and Disability Representation on TV and Film
Share
Who am I?
We are the hosts of Braaains, a podcast exploring the inner workings of our brains, mental health, & disabilities and how film & television portray them. We believe that by seeing and hearing about our mental health, disabilities, and other parts of our identities, we feel less alone. So Braaains is an extension of this as we interview experts with lived experiences about the different facets of their brains and how they want to see themselves on film and TV. Co-hosts Heather and Sarah Taylor both work in the film and television industry - Heather is a writer/ director and Sarah is an editor. We both have invisible disabilities -- Heather has ADHD and Sarah has Generalized Anxiety Disorder -- and we grew up with family members with mental health disabilities. This made us both interested in mental health and disability and we have been talking about our brains our whole lives!

1. PSYCHOCINEMATIC
Why this podcast?
Stephanie's fantastic podcast was one of the first we found with an ethos just like ours. We already think of her as a friend in this world as we all strive to reflect what's currently seen on screen and advocate for it to represent better the lived experiences we represent!
PSYCHOCINEMATIC
Stephanie Fornasier

A podcast analysing depictions of mental illness and disabilities in film and TV. Hosted by a psychologist, Stephanie, and friends with lived experience. We may ruin your favourite movie, but we promise to do it with fun, humour, and perhaps an important lesson or two.

2. Popcorn Psychology
Why this podcast?
Like Psychocinematic, this is a podcast from a therapist's perspective. Though it doesn't have someone with lived experience discussing films from their perspective, it comes from the expertise of three therapists who look at your favorite blockbuster movies and analyze them through a mental health lens. Definitely worth a listen for those who love blockbusters and haven't really thought about what they have represented on screen.

4. Bring Your Own Popcorn
Why this podcast?
Mixtape creates a casual environment for her guests to talk about the films that bring up feelings, give you all the feelings whenever you watch them, and how films can represent more than what is expected of them. You learn a lot about her guests through the films they watch and though it's not all about direct representation on screen, there is a lot of discussion on the IMPACT of films on each guest. THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS! And we love the tagline: Come for the hot takes, stay for the cold comfort! Funny!
