Kerusso Daily Devotional - In Good Soil

You may have heard someone say before that they’ve put down deep roots. Usually, they’re not talking about gardening, but about the roots of their lives. Family. Friends. A career. A church home.

We all want to belong. We want to be planted deep in the soil of community.

Colossians 2:6–7 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

If you’re searching right now, wondering where you should be, consider this verse. In it, we find that Christ our great Savior has a deep desire to keep us growing in good soil. Spiritually, we are to put down deep roots where He has planted us.

If you find yourself far from family, either geographically or because of hurt and conflict, turn to Jesus and tell Him how you feel.

His strong hands will carry you to the place He has waiting just for you, where you will belong. And He will plant you deep.

Let’s pray.

Lord, thank you for caring about us as individuals, and knowing exactly what we need and when. We love you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Never Let the Fire Go Out

Never Let the Fire Go Out

Have you ever had the pleasure of waking up in a cozy cabin...after you’ve let the fire go out from the night before? If you don’t get out of bed and put more wood in, the squirrels or raccoons aren’t going to do it for you!

Much more serious is the tendency to get lazy about the fire inside us to share the love of Christ. After so many years of being a Christian—especially living in a free country—sharing the Gospel can be put on the back burner.

Romans 12:11–12 says, “Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord. When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.”

Do you see what God is urging us to do in Scripture? He says to never let the fire go out! Never doesn’t mean sometimes, when we’re tired or annoyed about something. This is too important to mess up. Remember—Jesus saved you. And more than likely, through someone keeping their own inner fire going, they saw you through the eyes of compassion.

Let’s pray.

Lord, give us a passion for the souls of all people, at all times. And help us be ready to share Christ with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Let Go and Trust

Let Go and Trust

10/09/24 • 2 min

1 Peter 5:6–7 says, “Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.”

These two short verses tell us several things: One—if we submit to God’s power by acknowledging we can’t solve our problems, He is strong enough to intervene and bring about the outcome we really want.

Second, He does this in His own time, on His own timetable.

Third, we are to leave our problems at His feet. There is nothing wrong with getting an image in your mind where you actually do this, and then walk away—your burden lifted.

Key in getting on track is recognizing that you might have a trust problem. If you’ve been deeply hurt by, say, a family member, you might subconsciously be failing to trust God himself.

And this is the first step in getting free of fear for good.

Know that an unburdened mind is not usually gained quickly, or without what we would call maintenance. The only thing predictable about our world is that it’s unpredictable. If you think you’re going to have one great afternoon and then every day after that is carefree, you’re deluding yourself.

We’ve already established that a daily time of prayer, reading your Bible, and focusing on God’s love for you is a combination that our enemy can’t overcome. Choosing to believe God’s Word is practical, and it works. That can’t be emphasized enough!

Jesus said in John 16:33 that we will absolutely have trouble in our lives, but that He has already overcome the world. This fact will help to keep you on that straight path that will ultimately one day lead to paradise with the One that created you, sustains you, and loves you forever.

Let’s pray.

Lord, having the discipline to daily rely on you is something we often lack. When we focus and concentrate our minds and our hearts on your good gifts, fear leaves, and can be replaced with courage and peace. Thank you for providing for all of our needs, all the time. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - A Kingdom With No End

A Kingdom With No End

It was once said that the sun never set on the British Empire. The island nation had expanded its reach around the world for hundreds of years, and the Union Jack flew over many countries. But as happens with earthly kingdoms, the sun did set. Today, the British are back to being basically just that island nation.

The Bible talks about a kingdom that will have no end. What do we mean when we talk about that Kingdom? The Kingdom of God. The concept is found in the New Testament and refers to the entrance of God into the world again, through His Son, Jesus. They will be fully established at the end of history when God reconciles all things to Himself, and opens a glorious eternity for believers. Christians are invited to participate in making sure the Kingdom of God is heavily populated. We do this not in our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit.

For 300 years, the Roman Empire tried to kill Christianity, but by the end of the first century, there were 500,000 Christians throughout the empire. By the Middle Ages, with all its terrors and plagues and wars, the Kingdom of God had increased to 50 million. And today, even in oppressed areas like China, Christianity is experiencing explosive growth. Worldwide there are 2.2 billion Christians.

When times are tough, people turn to the living God. And as we’ve discussed, God invites us to participate in building His kingdom. We have daily opportunities to talk freely about what Jesus Christ has done for us.

Talk about a purpose-driven life—making your life count for something eternal. Share the Good News so much that when eternity comes, you’ll have no regrets.

Revelation 21:23 says, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it. For the glory of God gives it light and the Lamb is its lamp,” and that is a kingdom that will never sit in twilight.

Let’s pray.

Father, you are always adding to your kingdom, drawing people to you. Thank you that we can participate with you by sharing our faith in all the diversity of our days. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Choose Jesus

Choose Jesus

10/16/20 • 2 min

Who is the most loyal person you’ve ever known? A parent? Spouse? Friend?

Truthfully, we all crave loyalty. It gives us a sense of safety. We feel that if there is some loyalty in our world, it’s like a warm blanket on a cold night. Life seems less scary.

As we discuss the role of Jesus in our personal stories, it is good to remind ourselves often of ultimate loyalty. In turn, it encourages us to be loyal to that One person we can always count on.

John 14:6 says, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Jesus gives us loyalty that cannot be broken. Are we willing to stay true to Him, as well? In other words, if life’s road gets rough, do we stay on the path He has set for us? Like Peter, we tend to think nothing could pry us from Jesus, but our choices can do that. Then we regret being disloyal to Christ.

Resolve to never let that happen to you. Keep His sacrifice for you in your mind and heart. That will help you stay true to Him when life isn’t so great.

He promised to never leave you. Tell Jesus that you love Him for that, and keep your eyes looking ahead to the eternity He has made for you.

Let’s pray. Lord, make us strong in our loyalty to our Savior. Then let that light shine for those who see us. Amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Abundant Life in a Chaotic World

Abundant Life in a Chaotic World

07/19/22 • 2 min

In the spring of 2014 Daniel and Colleen Jaquith, American missionaries to the Philippines, were awakened suddenly by the sounds of gunfire and shouts. Before they could react a gunman appeared in their bedroom doorway, and he was holding a gun to the head of their pastor.

Demanding money, the intruder was distracted when their pastor suggested he look in another part of the room for money. This gave the pastor just enough time to overpower him.

This whole time, the Jaquiths were on their knees praying.

Now, how many of us would've had the steadiness to do something like that instead of diving for cover? This couple, full of faith and trusting in the strength of the Lord, had the discipline to pray while their pastor struggled with the intruder.

Incredibly, the intruder yelled at them to stop praying. The scene was surreal. And yet the spirit of the Lord was in the room that night. As the pastor began to overpower him, a wild shot hit Dan in the arm. This began another ordeal in the following hours, as they made their way by boat, a 16-hour trip, to a mainland hospital on Luzon.

While relaxing back in the US, Dan recalled the lessons they learned in the aftermath. Here's what he said, "I share this testimony with deep gratefulness to be alive, and for the ability to give the Lord praise for His mighty deliverance during that desperate time of trouble.” His wife Colleen remembered what it was like helping her bleeding husband, aware that many more hours of praying were coming.

Little more than six months later, they had returned home to Oregon for a visit, where they were able to enjoy seeing family and friends. Truly, they were so happy to be alive and thriving they forgot about the stress of their ordeal in the Philippines.

In this amazing story, we're reminded in Luke 1:45 that God supernaturally takes away our stress when we believe in Him: “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.”

Let's pray.

Lord, thank you for the path You've secured for us in a stressful world. Your kindness to us is almost too much to process, because You not only make a way for us to receive your promises, but You bless us too. You're a good God and if we just claim the promises you've already provided, we can experience abundant life, even in a chaotic world. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ means that we don’t just sit in our houses and shut away the world.

Scripture is an action item.

Isaiah 60:1 says, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.”

If the Bible is true—if God’s story intersects with our story—then a hurting world is in need of a Savior. The pain many are enduring will have no end until they meet the God-Man, Jesus. He is our healer, and His glory fills the earth.

We all have different personalities and various methods of engaging with others. But whatever personality God has given us, we are tasked with sharing the life-giving news of Jesus and His sacrifice.

Get in the game and do that very thing! God has called you to share His salvation with anyone and everyone. Darkness can be oppressive.

The Light has come!

Let’s pray.

Lord, you showed up in our world at precisely the moment we needed you most. Help us tell others that eternal story. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Kerusso Daily Devotional - Rise and Shine
play

10/07/19 • 1 min

Don’t you just love the diversity God put into the world? He created harmony and balance everywhere, including our individual “best time of the day” to be creative and productive.

Some are “up with the chickens,” as they used to say. Others burn a candle late into the night. Whatever time is your time to connect in positive ways, God made you to shine for His purposes.

Isaiah 60:1 says, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.”

And we are to embrace our uniqueness. Just because your eyes don’t focus until later in the morning—after cups, plural, of coffee—that doesn’t mean you won’t hit the mark today. You were built for this, to be a light to others and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

So rise up, whenever that is for you, and make a promise to God that you will get everything out of today that you’re supposed to.

Rise and shine!

Let’s pray.

Lord, you made us to be a light in a world that is dark too often. Thank you for the opportunities to make a difference for you. Amen.

Kerusso Daily Devotional - Battle Strategy

Battle Strategy

Kerusso Daily Devotional

play

05/05/23 • 2 min

Communism kept half of Europe locked up for much of the 20th century. For 75 years, the oppressive system took most freedoms away from its ordinary citizens. The political system responsible for tens of millions of deaths seemed almost indestructible. Then, almost suddenly, the system built on restricting freedom just collapsed. The end came so quickly that all the most experienced analysts and diplomats were caught off guard.

How did that amazing turnaround happen? It didn't happen with guns and tanks and planes. Not a single missile silo was opened. Instead, it took the strategic efforts of a religious leader, a Polish labor union activist, and countless regular citizens in countries like Hungary and East Germany, among many others, to expose evil and demand a better way of life.

In a similar way, God defeats evil by showing us a strategy that might go unnoticed at first.

2 Corinthians 10:4 states, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” Only a reliance on God and continual prayer will win the day. The battles you are fighting cannot depend on vengeance or worldly efforts. We're fighting spiritual battles and conventional weapons just won't work.

As believers, we're called to duty, called to minister to others, to tell others of His Word, His love for us, and His actions to help us overcome. There are many examples in the Bible of people relying only on God for their victory. Not once did they lose. We won't either, if we lay aside our own perceived strength and trust completely in His divine power.

Let's pray.

Father, help us see that our own plans are often wrong. We get into a battle and become blinded by our own strategies or a thirst for our own kind of victory. But the time to fight must come with a commitment to trust in your infinite power, to rely on the victory that only comes through Christ, and to tell others about our Lord and Savior. Bring this to our mind when the battle rages. In Jesus' name, amen.

On Today’s episode of the Kerusso Daily Devotional, we talk about how our perspectives can sometimes fool us, especially when fear grips our minds.
Mark 5:36 says, “Jesus told him, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’”
There are times when fears we anticipate or are in the midst of are very real. However, it’s important to stop and take stock, to see if we are simply imagining a terrible thing that will never come to pass.
