Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
Hi! I'm an Associate Professor in the Writing Program at the University of Southern California, creator & host of the award-winning podcast Writing Remix, host & creator of The Nostalgia Test Podcast, a poet, Kerouac scholar, and writing coach. In 2021, I co-created an international network of academic podcasters called The Humanities Podcast Network, which has hosted workshops at Stanford, UCSB, and Macalester College, published an online handbook on teaching podcasts in the classroom.
Why did you get into podcasting?
Ever since I heard my first podcast (The 5am Miracle) I was like, "I need to start a podcast." Years later, in 2020, I started 2 podcasts. This is one of my favorite ways to create, and I've met so many amazing people as a podcaster. From other podcasters in the pop-culture community, international scholars, artists, writers, poets, and so many more. Plus, it's a fun way for my and my friends to hangout, while we're spread out all over the country. I'm looking forward to building community!
How did the idea for the show come about?
The Nostalgia Test Podcast came out of the obsession my longtime friend (Manny Coelho) and I have with the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail. It's a perfect nostalgic film for us, and brings us back to so many memories, yet is it good? Does it pass The Nostalgia Test? And so, the podcast was born. We are on a journey to see if our favorite pop-culture (movies, music, TV, food, toys, etc.) is still good, just nostalgic, or terrible, and now we want YOU to come on and put YOUR pop-culture favs to the test
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
We want our listeners (The Nostalgia Testers!) to feel like they're hanging out with us and just talking late into the night about our favorite movies, music, TV, etc. We want them to feel at home with us, that we're those crazy friends who make a bigger deal about which Rocky movies are better than others, if the 90s had better one-hit-wonders than the 80s, and does Frosted Flakes still taste good. We want our audience to see our podcast as a place for them to go and not take anything seriously
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
The biggest challenge is building our audience. We're a rated-R podcast, and this makes it hard for people to listen with families, and truthfully we get it, yet, this is who we are. We're two early Millennials from Long Island that are going to yell over each other and our guests, who are going to curse a lot, who are going to say "like" a bunch, and who are going to go down a long tangent about the greatest WWE superstar in the middle of talking about some movie, yet, we're giving it our all!
How can your listeners support your show?
The best way to support The Nostalgia Test Podcast is to Follow it wherever they listen to pods, leave 5-star ratings and reviews, engage our socials (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube), and mostly, SHARE THE PODCAST with their fans, friends, and family. If you're a podcaster, reach out and let's collab. We're always down for a collab. We want to guest of other pods.

Anything else you'd like to share?

The podcasting community is so much fun, and we're looking forward to being a bigger part of this community, supporting, creating, and collaborating. LET'S GET NOSTALGIC!!!
