If you've ever had questions about social anxiety and sex/intimacy, race/cultural background, work/promotions, and more... THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU! Listen to a social anxiety expert get into the nitty-gritty of these topics to help us feel better. How can I get a promotion at work if I feel too anxious to speak up or take on a leadership role at work? How does my race and cultural background factor into my experience of social anxiety? How does social anxiety impact intimacy and sex? Is my social anxiety part of my personality or is it something that’s a problem/disorder that I need to get help with? MEET DR. TYNESSA FRANKS Tynessa Franks received her Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Virginia and has worked in a range of mental health care settings including VA hospitals, private practice, and academic institutions. As a self-defined "shy girl", she realized a strong passion for helping people who struggle with worrying too much about what other people think and started Bashful & Bright in 2019 with this mission at the forefront. She creates videos, conducts group psychotherapy, and teaches a comprehensive online course to help women and men improve their social anxiety so they can start showing up, speaking up, and engaging in social interactions in a way that feels good. Your Social Anxiety Bestie - #31. Acting While Socially Anxious with Barry O'Neil
play

04/24/21 • 41 min

Have you ever wondered if someone with social anxiety could get into acting, screenwriting, or other performing arts? I know I used to wonder. I used to wish I could be an actor "if only" I weren't so scared. If that sounds relatable to you, I think you'll really enjoy my conversation with actor and screenwriter Barry O'Neil, who wrote and stars in SING ALONG IF YOU KNOW THE WORDS, a short film dealing with social anxiety that recently premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival. This episode was originally an Instagram Live interview I did with Barry. Check out the video version here! Follow @singalongfilm on Instagram for behind-the-scenes photos and updates on the fim!⁣ ⁣ You'll hear me ask Barry these questions: ⁣ 1. Can you tell us what inspired you to write this film?⁣ 2. Why did you choose the metaphor of feeling like everyone around you knows the words to a song and you don’t? ⁣ 3. Can you tell us what it's like to be a performer/actor with social anxiety?⁣ 4. Are there any other ways social anxiety has impacted your creativity?⁣⁣ 5. What takeaways do you hope viewers will get from the film?⁣ 6. Do you have any tips for anyone out there who is interested in screenwriting, acting, or other creative pursuits but who feels like they are too shy, introverted, or socially anxious?⁣ ⁣7. What's the best way for us to watch the film and support your work?⁣ ⁣ More about the film⁣ The story follows Ben, who throws a dinner party to conquer his fear of speaking in groups. ⁣ ⁣ As the party gets away from him, Ben grows increasingly frustrated and suddenly finds himself at the center of a real-life musical theatre number in his dining room, only he's the only one who doesn't know the words or music. ⁣ ⁣ After escaping to the bathroom for a panicked call with his therapist, Ben finally musters the courage to try singing along with his guests, even if the outcome is disastrous.⁣ ⁣More info Director: @alycia_delmore Screenplay: Barry O’Neil Producer: @kate_dandel www.siff.net/festival/sing-along-if-you-know-the-words

Your Social Anxiety Bestie - S2. E20. Why I Take Medication for Social Anxiety
play

08/09/22 • 12 min

*Super important disclaimer: This post is not meant to influence your medication decisions one way or another. I just remember wishing I could find some first-person accounts of what life was like before and during medication. That's all this is. At all times, trust your doctor's expertise over mine.*

Medication is not a magical cure-all. But for me, it's been a science-backed help-a-lot.

I was afraid to take medication because of the potential side effects I read about online... until I realized that untreated anxiety had its OWN side effects, and those side effects sucked.
This episode shares some insight into my medication journey and opens the floor to questions and discussion!

Today you'll be hearing from Chris, a 29-year-old husband, dad, and software developer.
Chris shares how he has had social anxiety and OCD since high school, and how he pushes himself to incorporate mini-exposures and "experiments" into his busy day-to-day life as a dad.
He also candidly discusses how social anxiety impacts his parenting and what it was like to tell his wife about his anxiety and depression.
We touch on sweating as well, which I know many listeners will find reassuring (nope, it's super not just you).
