Your Mom™

Lisa McCaffrey, Ashley Adamson

A show dedicated to all the Mums, Mamas, MammerJammers, Mama Llamas and Mamasaurus Rexes out there. Ashley Adamson and Lisa McCaffrey reunite to celebrate motherhood on a second season of Your MomTM. Enjoy their unfiltered conversations with moms of world class athletes and high achievers as they share personal stories of parenthood that feel both familiar and extraordinary. In season one we realized how meaningful it was for moms to simply have the space to share and reflect upon their own life stories. So this year we will also explore the broader notion of the power of storytelling in our lives. To help us, we’ve added two new regular contributors, Chantal Below and Betsy Bloom, who we consider experts in this field. Thank you so much for your support. Your Mom™ - Ep. 10: Solomon Thomas' Mom
play

09/27/22 • 65 min

As Suicide Awareness Month comes to a close, Your MomTM shifts gears this week. Lisa and Ashley speak with a mom who is championing the fight for Suicide Prevention.

Martha Thomas, mother of NFL defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, lost her daughter Ella to suicide in 2018. In this wide-ranging interview, Martha opens up about the bright light Ella brought to the world, the darkness of her mental healthy journey (26:00) and what she wants all of us to understand about suicide (47:11). Learn about the family's non-profit 'The Defensive Line' which aims to reduce the stigma of talking about mental health and in turn reduce the number of suicides among young people, especially those of color (52:33).

There is something for everyone in this powerful interview. You'll laugh as you hear stories about how Lisa and Martha's friendship began at Stanford (4:06 ), and you'll be inspired by the way Martha channeled her grief and pain into a higher purpose, as she works to ensure no family has to suffer the pain and loss of losing a child to suicide.

Your Mom™ - Ep. 52: Reunited and it feels so good
play

11/06/23 • 56 min

Your favorite duo is back for Season 2! Join hosts Lisa McCaffrey and Ashley Adamson as they look back on the past four months and forward to the next season of Your MomTM.

Lisa shares updates on the whole McCaffrey crew: Christian’s calming perspective on the 49ers' season, Max’s phenomenal NFL coaching debut, Luke’s signature helmet toss, Dylan’s post-college business ventures (Mazda, we’re open to a sponsorship), and Ed’s latest contribution to the world of sports: Pepper Pong.

Last season’s listeners may remember Lisa manifesting Ashley losing her job at Pac-12 to focus on podcasting full time. To that we say...be careful what you wish for! As the dust settles on the conference’s dissolution, Ashley reflects on the past 11 years with her Pac-12 family and her determination to make the most of their “senior year” together.

We learned so much while recording the first season of Your MomTM. One of our key takeaways is the importance of carving out time and space to share stories. This will be our guiding principle for season 2, and we are thrilled to welcome Chantal Below and Betsy Bloom as recurring contributors on our storytelling journey.

We’re thrilled to have you along for the ride. Thanks as always for listening! Please drop us a line at [email protected].

Your Mom™ - Ep. 53: Your Story with Chantal Below
play

11/15/23 • 51 min

This week, Ashley introduces you to Chantal Below, who we are thrilled to have joining us as a regular contributor on season two. Chantal is a mom of three and an executive leadership coach who works with individuals and teams to challenge their own inhibiting assumptions, or, as she puts it, “giving people the space to pause, recognize their patterns, tendencies, impacts, and choices, and then make a decision about if it’s working.”

After spending time with her over the past six years, Ashley frequently proclaims that, “everyone needs a Chantal in their life”. While we work on cloning Chantal, this episode gives listeners access to her unique perspective and process. Ashley and Chantal’s conversation covers everything from our shared struggle for acceptance, the connection between our best traits and our biggest weaknesses, the power of reframing complacency, our immunity to change, and our ability to question the stories we tell ourselves. Plus, Ashley recounts a personal victory involving direct communication and trash cans.

More about Chantal Below:

Chantal moved from the US to England in third grade. As an expat, she promptly began saying biscuit instead of cookie and spelling color with a ‘u’ in order to fit in. She never developed a love of cricket, but did develop a fascination with humanity, unconsciously examining how different cultures and beliefs expand or limit our choices.

After graduating from Georgetown University, she started her career as a 4th grade teacher with Teach For America, hoping to expand choices for too-often marginalized children in low-income schools. She loved the energy of the kids and the vibrancy of the community, but no one really wanted her teaching long division.

Since then, she’s been exploring the many dimensions of the human condition while avoiding math. She worked for years in the education non-profit world leading teams and developing leadership development programs. Then, she ventured out on her own and started Redcliff Coaching, Inc. She supports leaders in all industries - with clients at Google, Homeless Prenatal Program, and to get out of their own way and live and lead in the way they most want. She also attempts to parent three kids who are curious, compassionate, hysterical, and only vaguely pay attention to her advice. She lives in Oakland, CA.

Fourteen years ago Heather Vandenberghe was a single mom living in New York, thriving in a high profile career as Senior Vice President of Marketing for Louis Vuitton. But one afternoon in September of 2009, her entire life changed as she came out of a meeting to several missed phone calls bearing the type of excruciating news every parent fears.

Her youngest daughter Elle was in the hospital after being hit by a car while on her scooter. Her three-year-old spent two weeks in a medically-induced coma, four months in an ICU and ultimately endured ten brain surgeries. "That is why I'll never miss another phone call in my life," Heather explained during this inspiring interview which highlights a mother using pain as fuel to create meaningful change.

Elle is now 17 and while she still deals with complications from the accident, her mom is grateful the daily struggles are mostly focused on typical teenage stuff, like trying (and failing) to smooth out those unsightly bumps in her daughter's ponytail before school.

Heather Vandenberghe lives in LA and is currently the CEO of Flexpower, the founding partner of Your MomTM and the first company to invest and support our mission of celebrating motherhood.

Fresh off her last on-air broadcast with the Pac-12 network, Ashley Adamson sits down with leadership coach Chantal Below and executive producer Betsy Bloom to process the sweet sorrow of “necessary endings.”

In our early years, endings are honored with graduations, diplomas, and yearbooks. But, as we get older and lose these rituals, it becomes harder to identify the “right” time to make a change or say goodbye. And, as Chantal points out, maybe there isn’t a “right” or “wrong” time, just choices and consequences.

And, what about those endings we don’t see coming: the last time we see a loved one before they die, the last time we eat at our favorite restaurant, the last time we tuck our kids into bed? How can we acknowledge the finales that conclude without fanfare?

Endings always leave us with more questions than answers. In the end, our most important lesson came from a children’s book: the power of embracing “maybe”. How fitting, then, that Ashley signed off from her final broadcast with this quote from Bruce Springsteen: “Maybe everything that dies, someday comes back."

We’re thrilled to introduce you to our executive producer, Betsy Bloom. Everyone agrees that Betsy Bloom has a name made for showbiz, so it’s only natural that she join us in front of the mic in addition to her work behind the scenes.

While Ashley and Betsy first met via their husbands (Ashley’s husband’s Chris is best friends with Betsy’s husband Mac), they quickly forged their own love affair. Ashley recalls first falling in love with Betsy when she heard Betsy recite her vows on her wedding day; while Ashley wasn’t the intended recipient of the vows, Betsy is glad they landed with such a receptive listener.

As Ashley began to brainstorm starting a storytelling company, she found herself wanting to talk through the idea with Betsy. Meanwhile, Betsy was struggling with post-pandemic teacher burnout and looking for a different creative outlet. When Ashley called to discuss working together, Betsy interpreted it as a sign from above and jumped at the opportunity. The two have been collaborating and swapping stories ever since.

Join Betsy and Ashley as they discuss the cathartic power of storytelling, interactions with online trolls, and what teachers wish parents understood about kids. Stick around until the end to hear their contingency plan should their husbands decide to run off together.

As always, please send any comments or feedback to [email protected].

More about Betsy Bloom:

As an only child with an active imagination, Betsy spent much of her time reading and inventing stories. In middle school, she was an inaugural member of the club “Spin-A-Storytellers”, and she still has the t-shirt to prove it. Her love of language continued through her time at Colgate University, where she earned a B.A, and after graduating, Betsy worked in book publishing, where she engaged with literature in a new way, working directly with authors (meeting Judy Blume remains a career highlight).

Betsy left publishing to earn a Masters in Literature from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf College of English, where she spent four summers studying stories, writing essays, and consuming obscene amounts of Vermont cheddar; she also met her husband through the program.

While earning her degree, Betsy made a career transition into teaching English; seven years later, it remains her most challenging and rewarding professional experience to date. Betsy and her husband reside in Buffalo NY, (Go Bills) where they are currently renovating a hundred-year-old home, binging The Great British Bake Off, and testing the area’s best wings.
