Today we have a remarkable and empowering community birth story.

Today on Yoga|Birth|Babies I have Amber Hogue. Amber is a proud mom of two boys, Finn and Wally, and lives in the Bay Area with her family. She works in clinical research with a focus on patient engagement, leveraging her expertise to create meaningful connections and improve healthcare outcomes. A yoga teacher for over 10 years, Amber has spent the last 3 years specializing in prenatal yoga, blending childbirth education with mindful movement, and is a graduate of the PYC teacher training!

As you listen to this episode, it will become clear how Amber took ownership of her birth and advocated for herself, her wants, and her needs. I hope you enjoy listening to her story as much as I did.

Today we’re talking about how to overcome, and avoid, traumatic childbirth experiences. My guest for this conversation, Rebecca, shared with me a statistic that blew my mind: 35-45% of people report having a traumatic birth... An absolutely enormous number! Throughout our conversation, Rebecca shares some key factors that play a role resulting in traumatic birth experiences, red flags to keep an eye out for when working with your care provider, and 3 top-tier tips for preparing for childbirth. Additionally, we go into her expert’s take on elective labor induction, how to advocate for yourself, and different birthing positions. We round out our wonderful conversation with how parents and those in the birth team can learn to advocate for themselves if they are feeling pressured or coerced by their care provider. The information in this conversation is so rich and I’m hoping that by the end of this conversation, you’re going to feel so much more ready to move into that experience and have the confidence of your team around you.

Today on Yoga | Birth | Babies, Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN joins me for this special conversation. Rebecca Dekker, a nurse with her PhD, is the founder and CEO of Evidence Based Birth® and the author of Babies Are Not Pizzas: They’re Born, Not Delivered! Previously, Dr. Dekker was an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Kentucky. In 2016, she shifted gears to focus full time on the mission of Evidence Based Birth.® Dr. Dekker is also host of the Evidence Based Birth® Podcast!

Rebecca would like to offer the advice to expectant parents to do the research in finding the right care provider for you and educate yourself in building a supportive birth team. It is never too late, and it may feel like a trap, but you can be creative and resourceful in finding a way to get people who you trust at your birth. If it’s not possible to switch, then make sure you have strong advocates in the room with you that are ready to speak on your behalf. Rebecca would like you to know that it’s not your fault if your care provider is abusing you and it’s not your job to find another doctor to replace them. Most the time, there's somebody else who can step in, and most of the time they come in really willing to help and feeling bad that you've had a bad experience.

If you could choose between a functional efficient labor or a dysfunctional and inefficient labor, I’m guessing you would choose functional and efficient labor. I have been to many births as a doula and I’ve had 2 kids of my own. While the body may need time to open to let the baby descend and rotate, it can be a lot on the parents and support team to go through the experience of a long labor!

Today on Yoga| Birth| Babies I have midwife Gail Tully of Spinning Babies back on the podcast. This is her 3rd episode with us and I have to say I absolutely adore speaking with Gail. Today, we talk about how to use Spinning Babies for a smoother, more balanced, more efficient birth. Gail offers us techniques and methodologies to help babies navigate more seamlessly through the pelvis. She talks a lot about the different parts of the pelvis and different techniques to utilize to help the baby through, depending on where the baby is in the pelvis.

You’re going to get so much out of this conversation, Gail’s a delight to chat with. We’re very aligned in our birth philosophies and I have been using the Spinning Babies methodology for years. I’m currently working on the Spinning Babies Parent Educator Training (which was a fantastic 3 days in person followed by online training that I’m working my way through). You’re going to want to take notes on the techniques Gail shares at the end – and if you’re getting ready for birth, this is a great episode to share with your birth partner!

I’m so happy that the pelvic floor is finally getting its moment to shine. This incredibly important set of muscles impacts our breath, continence, helps keep our organs in place, and affects our day to day comfort. It certainly deserves our attention! However not all of the information people are sharing about it is factual and some of these myths can lead to real physical issues over time.

Today I’m speaking with Dr. Janelle Howell, DPT, WCS about these common myths. From assumptions like a cesarean birth will prevent prolapse and keep things tight, or that Kegel exercises will solve everything, or waist trainers will give your an hourglass figure, Dr. Howell busts through these myths with facts and shares evidence based solutions.

This refreshing conversation clears the air about topics many are often hesitant to talk to a care provider about but can have a huge impact on your quality of life.

Today’s episode features one of my favorite kinds of conversations- a community birth story. It’s always such a joy to hear and share the birth stories of students I’ve had the honor of working with in class, throughout their pregnancies, and today’s story is no exception.

To have this conversation today with me on Yoga| Birth| Babies I have Mia DiBiase. Mia is 33 years old and lives in Jersey City, NJ with her husband, their dog, and now their new baby. She works at Meta in advertising sales and enjoys staying physically active. Mia is also a PYC alum!

What makes Mia’s story especially powerful is her experience with a rare and serious pregnancy complication called vasa previa, diagnosed early on. She opens up about the anxiety that came with this diagnosis, its toll on her mental health, and the steps she took to advocate for herself during pregnancy to gain clarity about what was happening in her body. This advocacy became a foundation of self-trust that supported her throughout her birth, through both the challenges and the triumphs.

Today we have a community birth story. I absolutely love having members of our community come on and share about their experience. There are so many different ways to birth and so many times when someone has one idea for their birth and it turns into a different way and I think it is so important to hear all the different unfoldings of birth. So as you head into your birth you have a variety that you can envision. You’ve been informed about all the possibilities from listening to these birth stories so I’m so excited for you to hear Dia’s story.

Today on Yoga| Birth| Babies Dia Dearstyne shares her birth story. Dia is a professional dancer turned yoga teacher who I had the pleasure of meeting during her Prenatal Yoga Teacher training with me at PYC. She’s absolutely wonderful and I really enjoy this conversation. What you’re going to hear is how Dia had envisioned her birth and how it turned out, how she used her yoga practice and her pranayama throughout the birth, and really how she was able to use concentration and breath to help her through some really difficult moments. She also shares a bit about stumbling through postpartum as many of us in fact I’d venture to say all of us do. It can be bumpy and I love that we talk about that so that we take away any idea that everything’s always smooth sailing let’s wipe that away and recognize that the transition into parenthood has its ups and downs and Dia so beautifully talks about that.

Having a child with special needs can be both an isolating and challenging experience, but it also offers endless opportunities for learning, acceptance, and education. There are many different kinds of special needs, but today we're focusing on the “unseen” disabilities of neurodiverse children and the unique experiences of their parents.

Joining me today on Yoga | Birth | Babies is Susanna Peace Lovell. Susanna received her B.A. from UC Berkeley and is an author, speaker, disability rights advocate and certified professional life coach dedicated to the health and wellness of disability families everywhere. This is also her lived experience raising a teenage daughter with a myriad disabilities and diagnoses including ASD (autism spectrum disorder), ADHD, anxiety and severe food allergies.

If you're a parent of a child with disabilities, I hope this conversation offers you support and validation. For those who are close to families with disabilities, this episode aims to show how you can be a supportive ally. Tune in as Susanna openly shares her journey with her daughter, offers advice on finding the right resources and care providers, and discusses how parents can advocate effectively for themselves, their families, and their children.

Do you struggle with how to handle postpartum visitors and setting boundaries? Setting boundaries isn’t the easiest thing to do for some either. Personally, I was never good at this. After stumbling upon an article written by our guest, I instantly knew more folks needed to think about this ahead of time! We’ll touch upon when to have visitors meet your newborn, vaccinations, how to communicate to folks that you are or aren’t ready for guests, is the new parent the host (NO!), and even ways to politely ask folks to leave after overstaying their welcome.

To dive deep into this conversation on Yoga| Birth| Babies, we have Ruth Gordon-Martin. She’s the founder of CODDLE, an online community that supports and empowers new and expectant parents.

Ruth reminds us not only to prepare for postpartum, but having this conversation with your team ahead of time is a part of the preparation too! I’ve heard many stories from our PYC community of those who didn’t set clear boundaries and were put in awkward positions to navigate. Ruth has a lot of wisdom to offer as a parent and postpartum doula who’s helped to facilitate necessary boundaries for families. If you’re a new or expectant parent, I trust you’ll receive so much from this week’s episode. I’m excited to share this episode with you.

We’re back with my favorite type of podcast episode, a birth story! We’ve been able to create an amazing community of students here at PYC. I see many of these students twice, sometimes three time a week. I get to know them, hear their stories, listen to their concerns and I am able to share with them what I’ve learned. Today we have Katie Lohiya, sharing her birth story. She has been part of our PYC community since she was 13 weeks pregnant. She attended class 2-3 times per week, even when she wasn’t in NYC she would join online, which I absolutely adored. I was able get to know Katie well. We have a similar background, we are both dancers and performers and I resonated with her. When I asked her to share her birth story she said “absolutely.” Katie tells a beautiful birth story. I am deeply honored that as she was explaining her story, her time at PYC was very much interwoven into her birth. I am very appreciative that the time we spent together helped her throughout her labor experience.

On today’s episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, we’ve invited Katie Lohiya, one of our community members. She is originally from Chicago but has lived in NYC for 14 years. Katie graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a BFA in Dance. Before having her daughter, she danced professionally for a contemporary company (Lydia Johnson Dance) and has taught extensively throughout NYC. She’s been married to her husband Vaibhav for 10 years and they live on the Upper West Side.

Katie recommends that parents trust their instincts when it comes to pregnancy, birth and parenthood. She points out that there is so much information to sift through, that it helps to tap into their own intuition. Whether it’s finding the right provider, advocating for themselves in labor, or getting a second opinion from a pediatrician, she believes that if parents trust their inner voice they will ultimately make the best decision for their family. Katie’s story is heartfelt and candid. I’m really excited for you to hear her story, it’s very special!
