TRANSCRIPT

Hi, Karin Heimdahl here, creator of Y2K, and also the voice of Jess. But you know that by now, right? I said in my last update that we would probably have to deviate a little bit from our universe when it comes to Olivia's universe and this is the time. In this week's episode, Olivia and Tammi are going to walk the Tolkien trail, which as I understand it, is just a little more than what is allowed in the UK right now. So this is a very slight deviation, and Olivia's universe is going to deviate more in the episodes to come. Because this summer, I need Olivia to travel. I won't say where and I won't say when. But for this story to work out, I need her to travel, and chances are in our universe, we will not be able to travel internationally this summer. So we're going to deviate and right here, Episode 18 is where the deviation starts. I wanted to give you a heads up on that.

I also wanted to tell you something. Some of you may have noticed I've been a little quieter than usual on social media, both on the Y2K accounts and on my personal Twitter. I had scheduled a lot of Y2K posts, but I have been slower at responding, and I've had very few spontaneous posts. Because for Y2K, apart from my wonderful actors, it's basically just me doing everything. And for the past month or so, I haven't had the energy. I've been sick. I've had COVID-19. I am on the other side now and firmly on my path to getting better. So you know, don't worry about me. But it's been a lot, both physically and emotionally and I have been incredibly lucky that I have had no respiratory distress, and I haven't had to go to a hospital. For me, it was basically like having a really long, really bad flu that wouldn't give in. I was very, very, very lucky. And I recognize that and I realize that and I am very grateful for that. I didn't want to say anything on social media before now because I didn't want anyone to worry about me. But now that I am better, I want to share this with you and say that, I believe we can beat this. Maybe we can't beat it as individuals but together, we can beat this. You know this story by now right? Stay home if you can, keep your distance, wash your hands, take care of yourself and of each other by not taking risks. And if you have to go out into the world take every precaution. All right? During this time, which has been very difficult for me, I've had enormous comfort and joy from online community and online interactions. I'm not going to name names because I will end up forgetting someone, but you know who you are. Thank you so much.

And again, if Y2K is too heavy for you right now, and we have some really tough storylines coming up, please take a break from us. You know, we will still be here. Listen to something that makes you joyful, hopeful, makes you laugh, because we all need that.

Thank you so much for staying all the way to the end of the update. I so hope that you are safe and well and cared for and I hope that you If you are able to that you will enjoy episode 18 and all of our upcoming episodes throughout the year. And as always, thank you so much for listening, and oceans and oceans of hugs.

TRANSCRIPT

Scene B2:0

NARRATOR

Please note that this episodes features strong language and references to abuse and self harm.

(INTRO MUSIC)

NARRATOR

Y2K Take 2. Bonus episode 2. Selected LiveJournal entries written by Katarina Fischer from 2000 to 2002.

Scene B2:1

NARRATOR

February, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

I keep thinking about J. It is rare for me to be so attracted to someone. And yet a relationship between us would not be a good idea. He would try to dominate and I would alternate between stubbornly dominating back and sulkily surrendering. We’d have huge, unpleasant arguments and I’d end up witha crushed sense of self-worth. Not good. (sighs) He really is a lovely generous person but his ego is enormous.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:2

NARRATOR

March, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

...and then he said something patronizing and condescending and I left rather than snapping. On the bus on the way home I thought about what kind of person he is. He is intelligent, generous, social and popular... But he’s also self-centered, and he has no social antennae. Doesn’t pay enough attention to other people to develop any. And it really bothers me that he keeps saying I’m so... bad. I don’t quite know what he is picking up on, but it’s not a response I’ve had before. (beat) I stand up to him. Maybe he’s not used to that. (thinks) And he puts down my taste in music and plays and everything. Proclaiming his taste superior in every way. He is so annoying!

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:3

NARRATOR

July, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(has cried for days and has no tears left) Oh fuck. I can’t... I can’t write about this. I mean, what would I say? It happened. It is over. The dream is in pieces, shattered all over the floor. Can I pick the pieces up and put them back together? (beat) I don’t know. Feel like I’ll never be whole again. (beat) J is... He tries. And I’m sure he mourns, too, in his way. But still. It’s like the grief is all mine, it was my body that failed, and I... I want to punish it. I want to punish my useless body and I don’t know how. Everyone keeps telling me to eat, and rest, and take care of myself... I don’t want to do any of that. I don’t *deserve* any of that. My body failed me, failed my (voice breaks) child, and I hate it.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:4

NARRATOR

August, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

I always used to say if anyone ever uses physical violence against me, I am gone. Leaving. I cannot let anyone do that to me. Ever. I wanted to hold onto that, but... (long pause) Then it got all muddled. He’s promised never to do it again. And I hit him, too, a while back. Didn’t mean to, of course. But the fact remains. I did hit him. (beat) And he forgave me. So ...
