Happy New Year everyone! We're gonna bring in the new year here with an episode that was recorded in Pinedale, and features John Dahlke. John has been very involved with sage grouse conservation over the years, which has also helped with his sage grouse hawking pursuits. John also has a gyrfalcon propagation project, and primarily flies gyrfalcons in his own falconry. We discuss these things, as well as some of his unique learning experiences under some early pioneers of falconry in the United States, so come hang out with us as our conversations with Wyoming falconers continue!

We're shaking things up a bit over the next few months of the podcast! This episode brings the start of one of a couple of new series, with this series featuring one of the favorite dog breeds used in falconry: Dachshunds! After meeting the guest for this episode of the podcast for the first time, the inspirational spark for a series featuring this breed was lit. While attending my first dachshund field trials, we fortunately found the time in between Teddy's judging obligations to discuss her long history with this breed and falconry. Credited by many for being the "Godmother" of dachshunds being used in falconry, Teddy Moritz has a wealth of knowledge spanning decades in regards to these little dogs and their uses in falconry and hunting, so you all are in for a treat! Hopefully someday we can capture more of her memories and stories. In the meantime, we have many more episodes of this series coming up for you in the coming weeks with some new types of conversations and discussions, so we look forward to getting these series out to you! Happy hawking!

In this second episode coming to you from the Cape Falconry Club, we're joined by its chairman, André Cilliers, and he does a great job of going into further detail about how falconry is regulated and conducted in the Western Cape. He also discusses his use of dogs in his falconry and what led him to choose his current dog, his journey to flying longwings, and some of the other challenges he's had to face in his position along with his personal falconry. He was also very instrumental in helping to organize and coordinate this series, and without his help, it probably wouldn't have happened, so we're very appreciative of his invitation to attend the CFC meet! We also thank the Falconry Heritage Trust for their grant to help meet travel expenses for this series, and if you want to find out more about them and help support their cause, please head to http://www.falconryheritage.org.

This fourth episode in our second series featuring falconers from Mexico takes us to our host Gerardo's ranch, where some more amazing duck hawking took place. Shortly after Leo's falcon took a duck, we sat down with Leo to discuss some of the different species he has flown, some of his personal preferences and experiences with some of those species, and some interesting techniques he's used with Cooper's hawks. This episode marks another new experience for the podcast as well, with another new friend and guest on the podcast, Eduardo Garcia, translating for Leo during this conversation. We hope you enjoy! Brian Bradley of Skyhunters in Flight joins us for this episode of the podcast. This episode not only takes us back to more dachshund talk, but Brian also discusses different kinds of trapping, as well as other important aspects of falconry that he's had a lot of experience with. This was another fun episode recorded while visiting the falconry crew around the New Jersey/New York area, and again, highlights just how much dachshunds can add to the falconry experience in the right areas!

Nick Muckerman is freelance outdoor writer, houndsman, professional bird dog trainer and school principal.

Chris was browsing articles on Field Ethos when he came across an article about hunting mountain lions with hounds. Of course, he had to read that one. What Chris found was a fascinating, well written article that took a deeper dive into the nuances of hunting mountain lions written by Nick. The article was almost poetic and it was full of articulate details.

Nick joins Chris on this edition of Houndsman XP on the Xtreme Performance Outdoor Network for an energetic conversation about hounds, bird dogs, lion hunting and how we must share our stories to the world.

Those who are knowledgeable in the history of falconry are aware that there are few falconers left who were around during the early formative years of falconry's foundation in the United States. There are even fewer left who can say that they had a chance to learn from some of those falconers instrumental in forming those foundations. Thankfully, some of those falconers still around from that era are willing to share what their experiences were like, and the guest for this episode, Ken Felix, happens to be one of those generous individuals! Joining the podcast remotely due to obvious logistical challenges, Ken was gracious enough to talk about those early years, some of his challenges getting into falconry, his motivations to become a falconer, and other great topics! It's a true privilege to be able to share conversations like these, and I can only hope I get to do another follow up episode with Ken in person. Special thanks also goes to Seth Roy for helping to make this episode happen. Have fun!

The first time I had a chance to record with friend and guest for this episode, Jenni Buckley, was at the 2019 NAFA meet. Four years later, we caught up again at the 2023 NAFA meet and talked more about our dachshunds, Harris's hawks, environmental concerns, and other things. Jenni is also putting together the 2024 NAFA meet, and we plan to record another NAFA Hawk Talk episode soon to let people know more about the details for the upcoming meet. It's always fun getting a chance to catch up with Jenni, and can't wait to see her and other friends at the upcoming meet!
