World’s Toughest Podcast

Will Hicks

Welcome to the World’s Toughest Podcast, where we talk about any Obstacle Course Race you’d like, as long as it's World’s Toughest Mudder. Each week we talk to members of the WTM Community and share stories of success and failure in the single greatest event in OCR. The Worlds Toughest Podcast is a production of Contender Media and is not affiliated with Tough Mudder or TMHQ. Opinions expressed are those of the host and guest and are not necessarily the opinions of Tough Mudder. But they might be.

  • Prize money is back at WTM! $10,000 for 1st place with prizing down to 3rd.

Tough Mudder is rolling out the new Tough Mudder Challenges for 2020. What is Tough Mudder Challenges? We talked with Kyle McLaughlin, the CEO of Tough Mudder to find out.

Each month you will be given a new set of Tough Mudder Challenges. You will have four main challenges for each month, with three weeks to complete them. There will be one challenge in each of these four categories:

  • Distance
  • Elevation
  • Workout
  • Obstacle

In addition, each of the three weeks will have "Bonus" Challenges. There will be four challenges each week and you get to pick the two you would like to do.

Four main challenges plus a total of six bonus challenges for a total of 10 challenges to complete each three-week session.

When you successfully complete your challenges for the month you will earn new Tough Mudder Swag, including the new 10th Anniversary Headband, the 2020 Tough Mudder finisher shirt, and a monthly Tough Mudder Challenge coin. The Challenge coin is entirely new to Tough Mudder and you will be able to earn a new one each month.

The cost for Tough Mudder Challenges is $40/month. If you pay for all six remaining months of 2020, the price is $155 and includes a display case for your six Challenge coins. There is also a $15/month "digital-only" option if you aren't interested in the coins and other award swag.

World’s Toughest Podcast - 038: Tough Mudder on Four Continents with Anke Frederich
play

09/28/17 • 63 min

Anke Frederich, a WTM vet from Germany joins us this episode, but first we talk about the Tougher Mudder Championship Series and the money that Tough Mudder has been paying out in race purses this year.

Will Dean has been making the rounds on the morning news shows promoting his new book “It Takes A Tribe” and we’ve got audio from three shows. While Dean was talking to Charlie Rose he let something slip that I had not heard before.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is asking for our help in apprehending a criminal. Listen for more details.

Before we talk with Anke we read some reviews. Have you left a review for the podcast yet?

Anke Frederich lives in Germany, but she flies over to the U.S. regularly to participate in Tough Mudder events. Just this year, among many others she’s done Long Island, Chicago, Whistler, Toughest Mudder L.A. and Toughest Mudder Chicago. She worked pit crew for World’s Toughest Mudder in 2015 and ran in 2016. This November she will be the first German woman and the 2nd german overall to get her 50x headband.

Anke has done more Tough Mudders in more countries than anyone I know. She shares her thoughts on the differences between each country when it comes to Tough Mudder.

Anke loves Tough Mudder because of the community. She talks about how much the community and the people that make it up mean to her.

Canada’s Toughest Mudder Recap Part 2: Elite Edition On today’s episode we talk with four of the Elite Contenders to come out of Canada’s Toughest Mudder. KC Northup finished fourth among the ladies with 30 miles. KC finished fourth in Atlanta at her first Toughest Mudder before a disappointing DNF at her second in Philadelphia. KC talks about her path from success to disappointment and back to success again at Whistler. Shaun Stephens-Whale finished third among the men with 40 miles. Shaun has done Obstacle Course Races in the past, but his background is in Stair Running. He’s been all over the world running up some of the most iconic buildings ever built. Shaun finished his last lap in second place before Robert Killian pulled off an epic comeback to earn second place. Shaun talks about his thought process and how he felt watching Robert take second place bumping Shaun to third. Allison Tai finished third among the women with 35 miles. This is Allison’s fourth Toughest Mudder podium, more than any other man or woman. She talks about the secret to her consistency, and why Canadians seem to take so well to Obstacle Course Racing. Matthew Hanson finished fourth among the men with 40 miles. Matthew beat Austin Azar by four seconds for fourth place. Matthew said he felt like Austin was running him down, like someone hunting their prey. He gets into the race between the two of them and how it went down. World’s Toughest Podcast - 024: Toughest Mudder Canada Preview with PJ Catalano
play

Toughest Mudder Whistler Preview with PJ Catalano

Toughest Canada weather report is at 14:10.

If you want to get straight to PJ, skip to 20:35.

PJ and Will talk about Toughest Whistler at 47:55

Will opens the episode with news from the world of Tough Mudder including the release of the Holy Grail Leaderboard. All of your milage from the Tough Mudder competitive series is logged and you are ranked based on miles completed. Right now Sara Knight leads all people with 120 miles.

TMHQ announced a new obstacle exlusively for Toughest Mudder Canada: Bears. That is a true story. They’re concerned about bears on or near the course so they’re taking some safely precautions. We talk about them as we preview Whistler.

Of all the guys that run multiple laps at Tough Mudder courses, PJ Catalano is the multi-lappingingest. He’s the only guy Will knows that has run three laps in one day at a course.

PJ has run WTM three times, in 2014, 15, and 16. He’s hit 50 miles or more twice but still feels like those years weren’t completely successful races for him.

One of the things PJ and Will talk about is the emotional side of running World’s Toughest Mudder. You won't hear many people talk about it, but WTM will provide you with some highs and some LOWS.

If you'd like to join the World's Toughest Podcast Winner's List and enter the contest for a free pair of Merrell Agility Peak Flex shoes email [email protected] with Merrell in the subject line and the following in the body: 1) Your Name 2) Your email address 3) Your cell phone number.
