S2 E13 News in the Industry
Working with Lightning
03/25/24 • 49 min
In this episode we talk about LA's. Blake also tells us a little more history about the electrical industry. Jeremy goes over a few articles about upcoming projects and how the 49.5 billion dollars is allocated to them. Out of that 3.5 billion is to update the American infrastructure. Doesn't sound like much will get done compared to the other amounts for the other 2 projects! Between 2011 and 2021 America has experienced a 78% increase in power outages while utilities claim that they have way less outages than they have ever had. So, who is telling the truth? Fun Fact: excluding Alaska more Americans live farther north than Canadians! That is crazy to think about. Have you heard that people are trying to say that Ben Franklin did not do the whole kite and key thing? We believe he did.

Jeremy and Blake talk about the EPA mandating that in 2030 50% of vehicles sold will have to be EV's. How is that possible? How can you mandate that? Dominion talks about a flexible approach to trenchless construction in difficult terrain. Blakes learns what directional boring is. They talk about the "Big Wires Act" and how it will allow states to interconnect and share the load. Wind and solar is not dispatchable so it needs a cushion of supply to use as needed in peak demand. The problem is the price it will cost to have and maintain the batteries that are needed. They are predicting 435 billion a year!

We talk about how weather dictates the outcome of some tests in the field. You can get the values to change with just using a heat gun on the part you are testing. Why do we even test bushings? What do they use that data for? We go over some recent substation explosions that made the news in Utah and New York. What would be an acceptable time for a power outage to be considered "just a flicker"? It was just a flicker, no big deal!
