General Contractor/Designer & Inventor/Roboticist/Engineer Innovating Creative Solutions That Make Houses Home, with Ati Williams & Jessica Banks
Women with Cool Jobs
11/01/23 • 86 min
Ati Williams and Jessica Banks are multi-talented and multi-passionate women in the trades and STEM...and also 2 of 4 cohosts of "Hack My Home" on Netflix.. They show us why it's important to NOT be defined by the "lower third," which in TV terms means the lower part of the screen where they include your title or job description. We can be multi-faceted and multi-talented women, which is exactly what they are.
Ati Williams is a licensed general contractor and renowned design-builder, owner of Honeycomb – a renovation and design business, real estate developer, TV personality, speaker, and philanthropist.
Jessica Banks is an inventor, roboticist, systems engineer, designer, entrepreneur, owner of kinetic furniture company RockPaperRobot (RPR), and TV personality.
In this episode, we talk about:
- their winding career paths (dream jobs were astronaut & nonprofit hero)
- the importance of creating more opportunities for women by transparently sharing your experiences, salary, and more
- why approaching new situations with curiosity can lead to opportunities
- why being a woman in male-dominated field gives you an advantage
With over two decades in real estate and construction, Ati has revitalized numerous spaces, tackling everything from subtle makeovers to extensive rehabs. As one of the few black women in the construction realm, she's passionate about inspiring the next generation of female builders and entrepreneurs. Ati was born and raised in Kenya and later ventured to Canada, attending York University in Toronto, followed by pursuing her MBA at McGill University. She now resides in the United States.
Jess also consults as a strategic and technical advisor to agencies, corporations, and designers and as a space optimizer to individual clients. Jess is a vocal proponent of female representation in STEM. She speaks publicly on topics ranging from science to entrepreneurship to manufacturing and has degrees in both Engineering (MIT) and Physics (UofM).

Michele Galloway is the Automotive Fleet Manager at UPS (United Parcel Service) for the entire state of Utah. She runs the department that maintains and fixes all the UPS vehicles for the state. She’s breaking ground for women in the automotive field, as she is the only female UPS Automotive Manager in the Western half of the United States. (Note: It's not because UPS doesn’t hire women, but because most women don’t see themselves in this type of work.)
The Utah hub is considered the cross-roads to the West, and under her management, her team ensures that the best vehicles are transporting packages to other states. Here are a few things we discuss:
She runs a 24-hours-a-day operation. (Automotive is always there and needed.)
- She manages 54 employees and over 1200 vehicles every day.
- She does maintenance and repairs.
- She forecasts staffing and inventory needs.

Informational Interviews and How They Can Help You Find A Cool Job, with Host Julie Berman
Women with Cool Jobs
08/11/21 • 20 min
How can informational interviews help you find a cool job? An informational interview is an informal chat (like a chat over coffee) that you can have with someone who has a really cool job. This is one of the best, (basically) FREE methods to find out the nitty-gritty details of a job that interests you from a woman who is doing it right now. Find out if you'll love it or if it's actually not for you at all!
In this bonus episode, you'll learn:
- What are informational interviews?
- What questions do you ask?
- Who do you contact?
- How do you conduct informational interviews?
- How long should it be?
- Should it be in person, virtual, or does it even matter?
- How should I follow up if I do love her job?
It works for literally every career. Plus, the woman you interview will be excited that you're excited about her cool job!

Electrician and Handywoman Creates Her Own Business While Balancing Work and Family, with Shera Walker
Women with Cool Jobs
07/28/21 • 68 min
Shera Walker is a master electrician and a handywoman who is breaking down stereotypes and creating a life that balances work, family, and fun. She has done both commercial and residential work as an electrician and now has her own handywoman business called “Mizz-Fix-It” based in Gainesville, FL.
Shera apprenticed in high school under a master electrician after winning a statewide wiring competition, and went on to get her master electrician license in Georgia in 2001. She learned the trade while working with industry veterans, many times on incredibly old houses that could be over 100 years old with original wiring.
Later, Shera moved to the Dominican Republic for 6 years to do missionary work and was also asked to participate in some construction projects. While there, she learned many different construction skills and was able to put them to use when she came back to the United States. In 2020, Shera started her handywoman business “Mizz-Fix-It” and also started to renovate tiny homes.
