Women Resisting Violence

Gil emigró al Reino Unido desde Brasil con su pareja y sus dos hijos. Entró al país como turista y posteriormente se convirtió en indocumentada. Cuando el abuso aumentó, Gil huyó de su casa pero no recibió ayuda de la policía británica. Acabó en la calle con sus hijos en el invierno. Su vida cambió al encontrarse con el Servicio para los Derechos de las Mujeres Latinoamericanas (Latin American Women’s Rights Service - LAWRS), y ahora Gil trabaja en la Campaña Step Up Migrant Women, perteneciente a la organización, para visibilizar la vulnerabilidad de las mujeres migrantes con estatus incierto en situaciones de abuso doméstico.

LAWRS también trabaja con Migrants in Action (MinA), un teatro comunitario dedicado a las mujeres brasileñas que han sufrido violencia de género. A través de técnicas teatrales, ellas crean un espacio seguro para compartir sus experiencias, identificar la violencia y sanar.

Women Resisting Violence es presentado por Renata Peppl y producido por Louise Morris. Producido tras una colaboración entre el King's College London y el Latin America Bureau.

Gil migrated to the UK from Brazil with her partner and two children as a tourist, and subsequently became undocumented. When she fled abuse, she was not supported by the police and she ended up homeless with a child in mid-winter. Finding the Latin American Women’s Rights Service (LAWRS) changed her life and Gil now works on the group's Step Up Migrant Women campaign to highlight the vulnerability of migrant women with insecure immigration status who are suffering domestic abuse.

LAWRS also works with Migrants in Action (MinA), a community theatre group dedicated to Brazilian women in London who have experienced gender violence. Using theatre techniques, they create a safe space for women to share stories, identify violence and heal. We hear from the artistic director, Carolina Cal.

Localizada em um dos maiores complexos de favelas do Brasil, a Casa das Mulheres no Rio de Janeiro, oferece refúgio para aquelas que deixam relacionamentos abusivos em uma área onde a polícia se recusa a intervir.

A organização tem sido um santuário durante a pandemia, durante a qual muitos moradores de favelas perderam seus empregos. Além de lidar com um significativo aumento na violência doméstica, a Redes da Maré fornece trabalho e distribui alimentos para famílias que estão passando fome.

On 8 March 2017, 56 girls were locked in a classroom at their state-run children’s home just outside of Guatemala City, when a fire broke out. Only 15 girls survived the blaze. Four years later, no one has been sentenced for these crimes.

We speak to members of Ocho Tijax, a women’s group caring for the girls’ families and the survivors and fighting their case in the courts. We hear about the stigma they continue to face, through attacks and the destruction of their memorial, but also about their powerful campaign #NosDuelen56 (We Mourn the 56): a global cry for justice through art.

Vianney, the mother of Ashly Angelie Rodriguez Hernandez, who lost her life in the fire, tells us about her ongoing battle for accountability for her daughter's death.
