74. What you need to know about insurance with Kathryn Knowles
It’s not cool and it’s not sexy, but insurance is something we all need to think about.
It is one of the 4 pillars of building financial resilience.
(The other 3 are: spending less than you earn, have a disaster fund, and save for your future).
I’m joined by Kathryn Knowles of Cura Insurance. We chat about what insurance you need and why. And tackling some of the common myths around insurance.
Kathryn walks us through:
👉🏻 Life insurance
👉🏻 Critical Illness
👉🏻 Income protection
Do insurance companies really pay out? Kathryn gives us the low down on the stats and explains what steps we can take to make sure we get the benefits if we have to claim.
📣 Kathryn’s top tip – always ask to see any reports your GP produces for you.
If you have been declined insurance, it may be that your records weren’t correct, or that another company may insure you. That’s why it’s best getting an expert like Kathryn to help if you’ve had any health issues in the past. A knowledgeable adviser can help get you the cover you need at the right price.
🚨 If you’ve had a test for the BRCA gene insurers are not allowed to ask you about it.
Perimenopause Women:
➡️ Life insurance and critical illness cover - they aren’t interested in your HRT, the questions specifically say don’t tell us about your HRT.
➡️ Less likely to seek advice for protection
➡️ May have some health issues though, so worth considering expert advice to help you get the cover you need
Check out Kathryn's podcast (link below) where you'll find an answer to every question you might have about insurance. Really good resources if you have a specific health issue and you are wondering how insurers treat it.
GUEST EXPERT: Kathryn Knowles is a specialist adviser for personal, business and group life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection, within the UK and internationally. Kathryn produces videos and a podcast that are used within the insurance sector, by charities and the general public, as a way to educate about ways to access insurance.Podcast | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn

76. Money talks, but should it with Helen Johnson (The No BS Coach)
A few months ago we stumbled across a blog about money that we REALLY liked!
We’ve pinched the title of the blog for the episode and tracked down the author to come and chat with us – Dr Helen Johnson.
This is a must listen episode! Why, because Helen is not a "finance" person, but we have never heard anyone talk as much sense as she does when it comes to money.
You can go and read Helen’s full blog here and we heartily recommend that you do.
Helen unpicks some of the narratives we have about money...
👉🏻 Why does it feel so exposing to talk about money?
👉🏻 The link between money & shame
👉🏻 The best money & sex metaphor ever
And our favourite: assuming you’re not an idiot, you know money has very little to do with character, talent or skill. So why the heck are we attributing soo much to it???
KEY TAKEAWAY - RESOURCE! If you remember nothing else from this episode, carry in your heart what Helen says about deserving to be well resourced.
SPECIAL GUEST: Helen Johnson is a Coach, EFT/NLP therapist, and Coach Trainer on a quest to bring people great coaching and personal development without the BS. She founded Coaching Beyond - offering ICF coach training - to help people to help themselves AND others to make the most of their strengths and find fulfilment in work and life.
