Chicago’s CME Group has cut about 100 employees or 3% of its staff. Wall Street’s biggest banks have been chopping positions right and left this year, shedding more the 20,000 people during the first six months of 2023.

Chicago area home prices are rising faster than other major cities. Single-family home values rose 4.6% in May on the latest S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Index. The increase is the biggest of any of the 20 cities listed on the index. Last year at this time, Chicago was 18th. Cleveland is second on the index with a 3.9% increase followed by New York at 3.5% and then Miami at 3.4%. Nationwide, home prices dipped 0.5% in May.

Bloomington-based State Farm is raising Illinois homeowners’ insurance rates for the second time this year. The hike of 4.2% begins September 15. The increase will push the average premium up by $45 annually. State Farm raised rates in March by 2.4%, a $25 annual increase. Earlier this year, Northbrook-based Allstate raised homeowners’ rates in Illinois by 23% on average.

Electric vehicle maker Rivian, with a plant in downstate Normal, saw production and delivery drop in the first quarter. The company delivered 7,946 vehicles compared to 8,054 in fourth-quarter 2022. Rivian reports quarterly earnings Tuesday and is expected to show a net loss. The company’s expected to ramp up production moving forward while cutting costs. The net loss is blamed on factory downtime while upgrading its commercial van assembly line.

Also, Deerfield-based Baxter International is selling its biopharma solutions business to two private equity firms.

There’s more union activity at a big retailer with a Chicago presence. REI workers have voted to unionize. Crain’s reports employees voted 41-8 in favor of the union. The group includes 60 workers in clothing sales, inventory and repair. They’ll be represented by the Retail, Wholesale & Department Store Union. They want better pay, benefits, and job security. The REI store in Chicago is the fourth location to unionize following stores in New York City, Berkeley and Cleveland. The company is based in Seattle.
