Mentorship Mini-Series | Constantly Seeking Inspiration with Thom Shea
Winning Through Culture
11/23/22 • 35 min
This mentorship mini-series episode contains stories of mentorship with retired Navy SEAL, Thom Shea.
In this episode of Winning Through Culture, Tim Flanagan is joined by retired Navy SEAL and published author Thom Shea. Together they explore the mentor and mentee relationship and what it truly means to take on those equally important roles.
A mentee must show up authentically and humbly while accepting specific instructions from the mentor. The mentor is passing on a specific skill set to the mentee. At the heart of this relationship is the constant pursuit of inspiration in others. Seek out those mentors and mentees that move and inspire.
In order to be a successful mentee, one must first master what is going on inside. Mastering the inside equation is a necessary step to achieving goals within a mentor and mentee relationship. A mentee must also be “fully committed and not just mildly interested”. Time is one of the most valuable commodities that we have today. A mentor that is giving of their time should first be selective in taking on mentees, but must also make sure they are inspired in the process.
Key Takeaways
- One must be inspired in order to be a mentor
- Constantly seeking inspiration as a mentee
- A good mentee shows up authentically and remains trainable
- Mentees must state their case to a prospective mentor
- A mentee is responsible for their own inspiration
- Seeking an experienced mentor involves strategizing
- Full commitment on the part of the mentee is essential
- Master the inside equation first

About Tom Henske:
Starting his career in the insurance industry, Tom quickly found his interests shifting toward wealth management. He co-founded Lenox Advisors with four other professionals and obtained seven professional designations, allowing him to guide ultra-wealthy families in their financial affairs. His practice grew significantly, from 30 employees in 2003 to 350 in 2020.
However, as the business grew, so did the demands on his time, and work-life balance became a challenge. A meeting with a prominent estate planning attorney led to a career pivot into auditing life insurance policies for trusts, a role that filled a crucial gap in the market.
Simultaneously, his passion for financial literacy led him to write a book, “It Makes Total Cents,” aimed at teaching children about money. This project not only provided him immense satisfaction but also unexpectedly shifted family dynamics, encouraging parents to engage in more adult conversations with their children.
Today, he operates as a life insurance specialist, working with estate planning attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, and family offices. His expertise aids these professionals in navigating the complex world of life insurance, providing them with the necessary guidance to better serve their clients. His role as a specialist, coupled with his dedication to promoting financial literacy, has allowed him to make a unique and lasting impact.
