Wing Sauce Episode 141
Wing Sauce

Episode 141
This week has been a tale of two different hockey teams - heading to Colorado to get completely embarrassed, then let Arizona walk away with a win. Then beating Vegas in their own barn, coming home to play a hell of a game against Philly and a hot goalie.
In this episode, we hear how Dustin was hit by a pizza box (that’s assault brotha!), the guys’ thoughts on the top 5 D in the league today, and comparing Stammer and Ovi - who would you rather build a franchise around?
Last week of hockey before the all-star break! Let’s go Red Wings!

Episode 74 (Madison Bowey)
The fellas were joined by Brighton, MI native and current forward for the University of Michigan Wolverines, Luke Morgan. Luke is a hell of a player and has played with some notable names throughout his career (Quinn Hughes and Josh Norris - sound familiar?)
Luke takes us through every stepping stone that led him to donning the maize and blue, which, as a Michigan native, is a dream come true (shut up State fans - it’s the same for you too). *did not mean for any of this to rhyme*
Side note: just this past year, Luke played with three of the players that will likely be drafted in the top 10 in this year’s NHL entry draft (Matt Beniers, Owen Power, and Kent Johnson). Luke has been feeding these guys so many apples it’s a wonder why he hasn’t gotten a look at the big show.
The boys round out with some talk about the finals between the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning. This is first appearance by a Canadian team since 2011 and Montreal’s first trip to the final since they won it back in 1993. This would be Tampa’s first time in franchise history playing for a chance at back-to-back Stanley Cups.
Buckle up, folks - the end is near!

Episode 72 (Andreas Athanasiou)
The boys had on The Godfather of Made in MI Hockey, Nick Schleuter, and the director of training and performance at Legacy Center (off ice partner for Made in MI Hockey), Randy Young. We had an absolute blast talking about the upcoming season for the Made in MI guys as we all (except for Nick) ranked every team from last to first. We even gave out picks for the championship.
This episode is jam packed with information about the league that helps Michigan-born players to the highest levels of hockey. The NHL’s future is on the ice in Brighton this summer, so make sure to get out there and watch!

Episode 59 (Tyler Bertuzzi)
The boys this week had on Derek Roehl again. Dustin and Tyler debate the Ovi vs Fredrics scuffle, and if it was an acceptable play and if the penalty was enough for what had happened.
Derek played quite extensively over in Europe, the boys finally dive into Derek's extensive European playing time as well as the travel that he spent over there. From playing in Italy, Scotland, France, and a few other places he had quite the stamps on his passport. We talk about a few of his fights, and his playing time in Europe. Looking forward to Part III coming soon.

Episode 38 - Mike “Smats” Szmatula
Wing Sauce
10/05/20 • 66 min
Episode 38 (Thomas McCollum)
This week the boys were joined by current ECHL player for the Adirondack Thunder, Mike Szmatula. Smats takes us through the roadmap of his incredible hockey journey, and we’ve only scratched the surface. He played in three different junior leagues in three years and never had an issue finding the back of the net. In his final junior season, he won a Clark Cup with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. Following that season, Smats went off to Northeastern University, where he played in the famous Beanpot tournament. This was a special Beanpot since it was played outdoors at Fenway Park! After two years at Northeastern, Mike transferred to University of Minnesota to finish out his final two years of college hockey. After his senior season concluded at Minnesota, he went to the ECHL to play for his current team, the Adirondack Thunder. He also describes getting the call up to play in the AHL for the Utica Comets and Stockton Heat for a few games. Make sure to follow Smats to keep up with his hockey journey!

Wing Sauce Episode 70 - Paul Cotter
Wing Sauce
05/24/21 • 85 min
Episode 70 (Troy Stecher)
The boys were joined by Michigan-native, 2018 Vegas Golden Knights draft pick, and current forward for the Henderson Silver Knights (AHL), Paul Cotter. As Connor likes to say, we got to ‘peak behind the curtain’ of the life of a pro. Paul described some of the NHL teams he met with before being selected by Vegas - some were REALLY intimidating (Edmonton). Then he walked us through his first pro party with the boys. Did it live up to his expectations? Guess you’ll have to tune in to find out.
Paul is no stranger to throwing on a “knight uniform,” and no I’m not talking armor. Prior to his pro-debut, he played on a STACKED London Knights team in the OHL with Connor McMichael, Liam Foudy, Evan Bouchard, Alec Regula, and Adam Boqvist - to name a few.
He also plays in the Made in Michigan hockey league, where he is the captain of team Elk. Make sure to cheer on Paul and his team as they try to bring home the hardware this summer!
