Episode 2 - Dr Farzana Hussain
09/19/21 • 29 min
My very first podcast guest!
Very special indeed that my good friend Dr Farzana Hussain, GP of the year 2020 and fellow #HSJ100 Wild Card, dived in to do this with me.
This is exactly the tone I am wanting for the podcast series – full of humanity, wisdom, curiosity and very informal. Please give us some feedback. We are really hoping that you enjoy our conversation.
Lots of lemon lightbulbs! (See 'chapter headings' for more detail and to pick out your favourite bits) including:
- Understand the wider determinants of health
- See the person and help them have the best life they can
- Be curious and use it for good (how Farzana increased vaccination rates)
- Build trusted relationships, continuity of carer ... and even a bit of banter!
- Build on the innovation that has happened during the pandemic: people pulling together, including faith groups and communities
- Share the good stuff!
- Simple solutions can be the most effective – often they come from the community
- We're all learning, doing our best
- You can’t have evidence until someone has done something!
- We are all human. We all need support, including healthcare professionals
- Shared decision-making. Listening deeply and valuing people; understand what is important to them. All perspectives. True coproduction !
- Be prepared to show vulnerability
- Work together!
- Important role for social prescribing, non-medical solutions
- Make sure we look after young people!
- Focus on wellbeing and prevention, as well as people with diagnosable conditions.
In particular mental health: young people in the context of the pandemic - Welcome to Amanda Pritchard, new CEO of the NHS, and the first woman! Yay!
- The wider wellness agenda - beyond the NHS
- Quick wins and looking longer-term
- Support, time and resources ... Do things together!

Episode 1 - Setting the scene
Welcome to Wild Card – Whose Shoes! Walking in the shoes of more interesting people 😉
My name is Gill Phillips and I’m the creator of 'Whose Shoes?' a popular approach to coproduction and I am known for having an amazing network.
Building on my inclusion in the Health Services Journal ‘WILD CARDS’, part of #HSJ100, and particularly the shoutout for ‘improving care for some of the most vulnerable in society through co-production’, I was invited to provide thoughts and ideas for the new NHS CEO, Amanda Pritchard, so here I am .... with a little bit of help from my friends. I will be chatting to a really diverse group of people, providing a platform for them to speak about their experiences and views. If you are interested in the future of healthcare and like to hear what other people think, or perhaps even contribute at some point, ‘Whose Shoes Wild Card’ is for you!
Today, I set the scene, talking about some of my own insights and experiences, some examples of topics we will be covering and people I'll be talking to - including an extract of my chat with Dr Farzana Hussain, GP of the Year 2020, and my special guest for Episode 2!

Episode 3 - Dr Tim Fawns
Jumping off in a different direction today. Clinical and digital education.
Dr Tim Fawns was flagged up by one of his students, Katie Cullum, as one of the most engaging people she had come across.
Tim was the lecturer when she did a postgraduate certificate in clinical education online at the University of Edinburgh. This program is run for medics, dentists, nurses etc and apparently this module generally can be seen by students as a ’needs must’ to get into education, whereas Katie found Tim’s collaborative approach to learning was inspirational and I needed to speak to him!
I was particularly interested to talk to Tim as this felt like a similar approach to that used by Professor Becky Malby, with whom I work closely, using Whose Shoes with each cohort of Darzi fellows as part of their coproduction module. I thought it would lead to interesting connections, and this is starting to happen!
Some more lemon lightbulbs! 🍋💡🍋:
(take a look at me chapter headings and transcript for more detail)
- The power of networking - let’s link to the Darzi Fellows!
- The importance of collaborative learning, trusting people, and helping them navigate the system
- Being flexible in order to ensure equality, inclusivity and diversity, especially when there is a pandemic!
- Teamwork. Not ‘us and them’ #NoHierarchyJustPeople
- Collaborative learning; looking beyond the obvious, challenging the ’way we do things around here‘
- Special people. Administrators! Navigating systems. Breaking down silos!
- Nobody is ‘just’ a… mum, parent, receptionist, porter …
- The importance of bringing your whole self to work, and overcoming the barriers
- Perfection, imperfection … and mess: we all learn so much more when there is honesty, openness and vulnerability
- Valuing education - and indeed lifelong education!
- Threading Q & A between different participants and encouraging #IntentionalCoffee ☕️☕️
