Season 2, Episode 38

We are delighted to welcome this weeks guest Angharad Binder(Public Health Nurse) in the agricultural sector, delivering the Rural Communities Cancer Project with Farming Community Network (FCN) & Macmillan in the South East of England.

Resources (‘Nip it in the Bud’ campaign)

People in rural communities often have more advanced cancer when they are diagnosed and are 5% less likely to survive than people in urban areas.

Farmers often won’t get checked until the last minute. We need your help to change this.

This campaign have developed a range of resources which can be utilised to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage early detection, and to back our campaign. Resources below are free to use and can be widely shared and printed off.

Download our ‘Nip it in the Bud’ campaign pack and help them to raise awareness of cancer in farming and rural communities. This contains key messages and information about how to get involved.

The FCN are involved in a UK-wide partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support which is helping to improve the support available to those living with cancer in farming communities and rural areas.

As part of this partnership FCN is working closely with Macmillan Cancer Support, including raising awareness in rural communities of the signs and symptoms of cancer and building referral bridges to and from Macmillan’s services.

Farmers, farm workers and people living in rural communities can have lower access to cancer services and support due to the nature of their work and rural life in often isolated areas.

Farmers can be particularly at-risk of certain types of cancer – such as skin cancer, prostate cancer, or cancers caused by exposure to carcinogens.

Cancer can impact a family business that may employ many people and can have significant impacts on an individual and their families – including their housing and extended family situation, or immediate welfare issues for livestock.

  • FCN can be contacted in confidence on 03000 111 999, 7am-11pm, 365 days of the year. Speak to an empathetic volunteer who understands farming life.
  • The Macmillan Support Line is available on 0808 808 00 00, seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Further information about cancer and support available is available on FCN’s FarmWell website

No Joke of the week this week but Martin has something very special lined up for next weeks Podcast, don't miss it.

In this week's podcast, "Tyre'd but not out" we are very pleased to have a very special guest Mr Keith Ambrose.
Kieth is a local (to us) very successful businessman, owner of the company "Treadfirst" with a number of outlets across East Anglia in the United Kingdom.
There are over 200 different types of Cancer worldwide and today we discuss with Keith one very rare Cancer known as "Polycythemia Vera"
Keith openly and honestly tells of his pre-diagnosis conditions, how for three years he struggled to get to a point when a full and complete diagnosis was eventually made, and his procedures and ongoing treatment to the present day.
This truly is a remarkable story and such an addictive listen, an insight into one of the rarest Cancers today of which we still know very little.
Keith's Cancer study made a new ground-breaking discovery in the understanding of Polycythemia Vera which astounded the leading Professor in this field.
Note:
We appreciate the word Tyre'd in the title is spelled incorrectly, but it relates to Keith's business which involves Tyres.

Series 2 - Episode

A TikTok star roofer from Doncaster, England faced losing his foot after it went completely numb playing in the snow with his 12-year-old son.

Terry Hill is well-known in the city for his alter-ego 'Donny Knight'. He is remembered for dressing up in a suit of armour during an England match and jumping off a bus shelter and amassed thousands of followers on TikTok as Donny_Knight, a roofer who travels the world and shares his experiences. But now he has been forced to quit his job and stop travelling after a completely life-changing ordeal prompted by his foot going numb while playing in the snow in January.

Terry, 59, said: "I had just come back from a brilliant few months of travelling all over the world From Egypt to Thailand and more, and I decided to stay home for a while to celebrate Christmas with my family. “We had snow for two days in January so I thought I would take my son and go sledging. We got up to the hill and I remember struggling to walk up it and then I couldn’t feel my feet when we got home.

"I experienced this pain a while ago on a family holiday and over the last few years, I have found it hard to walk but it had been fine for a while." Worried, Terry booked an appointment to see his GP who told him he needed to go to hospital. Terry went the next day and within 20 minutes of him explaining how his feet were numb, he was seen by the doctors.

There, they told him he was at risk of losing his left foot and was sent for a CAT scan in order to establish exactly what was going on.

To Terry's shock, the numb feet were actually a symptom of him having blocked arteries and he needed urgent heart surgery - specifically, an Aorto-Bifemoral Bypass Surgery.

"This is a rare operation that is only done for five people a year," said Terry.

Within three weeks, Terry went under the knife and had seven stents put into the top of this leg. Soon, Terry was feeling back to his usual self but it didn't last long.

He soon began to feel in pain again and became out of breath if he talked too much. He was so weak he says he could barely move.

Now Terry has been forced to give up working and travelling and has made the reluctant decision to reach out to the city for help.

Listen to Terry's un-censored story and how Terry is today post operation.

Episode 25
Well as the boy's move into an exciting new year and today we are very luck to have special guest Jim Bunch.
Jim Bunch joins us today and tells us all about his battle with Cancer, diagnosis, treatment and major surgery which has left Jim with a Stoma bag.
Jim has kindly agreed to tell us today all about his experiences, his day to day life and the changes he's had to make with his new Stoma bag.
A stoma bag is a bag that collects waste from a stoma, which is an opening in the abdominal wall that connects the bowel to the surface of the body. A stoma can be created for a number of reasons, including bowel cancer, bladder cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, or an obstruction in the bladder or bowel.
Adjusting to a colostomy can be difficult, but it does not mean you cannot enjoy a full and active life. Colostomy equipment is discreet and secure, and you should be able to do most of the activities you enjoyed before.
Award winning BBC presenter, Adele Roberts, didn't let her stoma bag slow her down after bowel cancer surgery.
We thank Jim today as his story I'm sure will help and inspire other's especially those who are about to go through a similar scenario.

It's a bright and cheerful Podcast today thank you for joining us.
Martin is full of beans today as he describes his recent visit to the hospital and discusses the results from a recent scan on his Stage 4 Lung Cancer. It is always a fearful time for any patient to visit the Oncologist to receive results but this time there is some good news.
Martin also goes on to discuss "Lung Drains" and his experience in detail, including fitting, management, fluid draining, and ongoing management.
We have some very interesting and unusual questions from our listeners this week and we try our best to answer all of these.
The TV show "I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here" has started and we discuss two of the Z list of celebrities.
Don't miss "Martins Joke of the Week"
We pay a little tribute to King Charles's 75th Birthday. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's invite was apparently snubbed by the pair.
