The Cure for the Common Company: A Chief Medical Director’s Prescription for a Healthier Workforce
Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura
01/28/23 • 25 min
Dr. Laura welcomes her first guest of 2023, author and Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Wellbeing at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Richard Safeer to the show. Dr. Safeer just released his first book, “A Cure for the Common Company” and he talks about his book and the benefits of workplace wellbeing with Dr. Laura.
Richard Safeer wrote his book because he sees that what companies are doing may not be as effective as they thought. He believes there is a better way to use company time, energy, and resources to effect a greater culture of wellbeing. He explains the six building blocks of wellbeing, where the title of his book came from, and how employers are instrumental in the health of their employees in this inspiring conversation with Dr. Laura.
“So, you know, one of the most common challenges I see workplaces have is that the employer takes this individual approach. Here are the resources, go ahead and use them and get better. As opposed to recognizing that we're all in this together, that our well being is a team sport and that we rely on each other to improve and maintain our health and well-being” - Richard Safeer
About Dr. Richard Safeer:
Dr. Safeer is Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Wellbeing at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Safeer completed his B.S. in Nutrition at Cornell University before graduating from medical school at the S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo (magna cum laude). He’s a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and the American College of Preventive Medicine.
Prior to Hopkins, Dr. Safeer practiced family medicine in Virginia. He was then on faculty at the George Washington University, the Residency Director of Family Medicine in his last year. He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness’ to the realm of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA. He holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the American University, where he taught “Organizational Health”.
Amongst his responsibilities at Hopkins, includes leading the employee health and well-being initiative, Healthy at Hopkins. Dr. Safeer also advises the institution on matters related to health plan benefits, occupational health, and the employee assistance program. He has published many journal articles and his work is featured in many books. He regularly speaks to national audiences on the employee health and wellbeing space, more specifically on how to create healthy workplace cultures. Navigating Narcissism in Work and Life
Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura
06/28/22 • 23 min
Wendy Behary, founder and director of The Schema Institutes of NJ/NYC/DC and author of the best-selling “Disarming the Narcissist” (available in 14 languages), joins Dr. Laura once more to dig deeper into how narcissists show up at work and in home life. She explains the emotional impact of the narcissistic individual on those around them.
Wendy Behary details the way in which overt and covert narcissists work to exert control over people and also how intimidating, overwhelming, and anxiety-producing they can become. She and Dr. Laura explore how gaslighting, or distorting reality, is used by the narcissist to instill doubt in others. Wendy has keen insight into how to cope with narcissists in your workplace or home, how to regain a sense of self, and also when and how to confront them in order to find your voice. Wendy encourages learning how to regain calm within yourself, not just for dealing with narcissists but so you can pursue personal wellness.
“The narcissist is attracted to self-sacrificers. And so often the empath and the self sacrificer are one and the same. So when we think about someone who is highly self sacrificing, typically what motivates that is two things: guilt and empathy. So if you've got a super amount of empathy and you also carry guilt, which may have been laid down through modeling in your own early life, then chances are you're willing to sacrifice your own needs, even your own identity, in order to please another. Narcissist: yay, happy day, right?” - Wendy Behary

Disarming the Narcissist at Work
Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura
06/14/22 • 27 min
Dr. Laura welcomes Wendy Behary, founder and director of The Schema Institutes of NJ/NYC/DC and author of the best-selling book “Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed”, to the podcast. Wendy brings over twenty-five years of professional experience, and a specialty in treating both narcissists and those who deal with them, to this important conversation.
Wendy Behary defines narcissism and explains the traits that define both more typical “overt narcissists” and the “covert narcissists” she refers to as ‘virtuous victims’. Narcissistic individuals all carry the same sense of very self-absorbed energy. Dr. Laura and Wendy explore why narcissists do tend to gravitate to professional work and leadership positions, and Wendy shares the pros of their leadership as well as the devastating cons. Wendy has vast experience, through her extensive work as a therapist, on how to deal with a narcissist and why certain approaches work and others don’t. She wrote her book to help the people living and working with narcissists identify opportunities to get them help, while liberating themselves from self-blame.
“I think one of the toughest situations is when you're working with or for someone like this, especially if it's your boss or supervisor, because you may just not have the luxury of just leaving. Or the ease of transitioning into a whole new job. If you can, it may be the best way. But for most people that isn't the case. And so I guide them, as you probably do too, Laura, with strategies like: set limits as much as you can, try to limit your exposure, keep yourself tucked away from the narcissist as much as you can. Don't be trying to win them over. It's really a lost cause.” - Wendy Behary

Being Yourself at Work to Create Better Work-Life Wellness
Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura
05/28/22 • 24 min
Dr. Laura and DDS Dobson-Smith, CEO of SoulTrained and author of “You Can Be Yourself Here: Your Pocket Guide to Creating Inclusive Workplaces by Using the Psychology of Belonging”, explore work-life wellness in their second conversation. DDS breaks down how a culture of belonging directly impacts wellness at work.
Dr. Laura and DDS share personal stories from their own lives that illustrate times when they didn’t feel that vital sense of belonging in a space. They explore the impact that had on their senses of self. DDS also likens work-life wellness, or “work-life blend” as they call it, to a pie and how each slice of your life is part of the overall pie in context. They discuss that choices in terms of time you give to work, hobbies or relationships mean other pieces of the pie must necessarily shrink to accommodate. DDS reveals the book and podcast they most recommend and their hope for how people can improve workplaces in the future.
“I love that you call it work-life wellness. Because I refer to it as work-life blend. And I just don't believe in the concept of work-life balance, because that phrase in and of itself is saying there's work and there's life. And I like to remind my clients that work is one context of life. And that your life is made up of many contexts. ... And so for me, work-life blend means being able to look at all of the contexts of my life, and approaching them, and experiencing them, in ways that are fulfilling.” - DDS Dobson-Smith
About DDS Dobson-Smith:
DDS Dobson-Smith is a licensed therapist, author, executive coach, speaker on leadership and growth, and a Reiki master — all in service of helping others grow and become who they are. They are the Founder and CEO of SoulTrained, an executive coaching and leadership growth consultancy. Their new book is called “You Can Be Yourself Here: Your Pocket Guide to Creating Inclusive Workplaces by Using the Psychology of Belonging”
DDS brings multi-sector global experience, decades of training in human potential, and enduring dedication to creating leaders who are worth following to everything they do.
They have notched up over 25 years of working in small, medium, and large corporations. They grew up in the hospitality industry and they started their career as a college professor teaching hotel and business management. They’ve since held a range of senior, executive, and C-Suite level roles across a host of sectors and companies.
DDS Dobson-Smith is certified as an Executive Coach by both the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring. They are credentialed with the International Coach Federation, and are a coach-supervisor through the Coaching Supervision Academy.

Difficult vs. Toxic Bosses: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?
Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura
10/22/24 • 15 min
Dr. Laura revisits the topic of toxic bosses with in-depth information about the differences between a difficult boss and a toxic boss. In conducting studies and reading research on toxic bosses for the book she’s writing, Dr. Laura has gathered an immense amount of knowledge on identifying, differentiating, dealing with, and surviving toxic bosses. In this episode, she illustrates how a difficult boss is not necessarily a toxic boss and why this difference matters.
One of the main differences Dr. Laura points to is that while a difficult boss can be unpleasant to work with, they are manageable and can be navigated. A toxic boss, however, is not a sustainable person to work for as they are incredibly bad for mental health, physical health, and career progression. Dr. Laura breaks down all the ways we can differentiate between a difficult and toxic boss through their personal styles of management, levels of micromanagement, whether they communicate poorly or with dishonest and manipulative intentions, and how it feels when working with them. This episode expands our understanding of toxic bosses and adds more information to our knowledge bank so that toxic bosses can be more readily identified and, hopefully, avoided.
“And the biggest difference, really, is that you can find ways to manage a difficult boss, and you cannot do so with a toxic boss. A toxic boss is really damaging to your engagement, your productivity and your wellbeing.” Dr. Laura
