What's The Juice

Olivia Amitrano

Welcome to the juiciest conversations in wellness with Olivia Amitrano, founder of Organic Olivia. “What’s The Juice” is a podcast as multifaceted as its listeners — a fierce community on a courageous path of self improvement, learning, and healing. Here we share conversations that bridge traditional wisdom and modern science, offering a balance of tangible advice and perspective-shifting philosophies that will optimize your health and change the way you see the world. One week we’ll spill the (herbal) tea on functional medicine for hormone imbalance, while the next we’ll dive deep into psychedelic assisted therapy, codependency and learning how to say no. Olivia is a clinical herbalist, formulator, entrepreneur, and, most notably, an educator. Each episode is an opportunity to synthesize her education in herbalism, psychology, and a lifetime of health issues into actionable tips on how to not only heal but thrive. Interviews with doctors, therapists, holistic practitioners, astrologers, artists, and storytellers are brimming with raw, human moments and empowering information. Candid and ever curious, Olivia is on a mission to understand the human condition and share what she learns along the way. Above all, her goal is to connect you with the paradigms, practitioners and teachers you can rely on to help get you to the next level. Peeling back the layers isn’t always pretty, but the juice is worth the squeeze.

This week Nick and I are on the mic basking in our wedding glow and answering some of the most common questions we've received. A year ago we had no idea where we wanted to have our wedding, how to find a planner, and what we wanted to do to make our day feel like "us". We pulled it off and managed to achieve our perfect day!

Here's the juice:

  • what we loved and what we didn't love
  • things worth spending on versus things we didn't need to spend on
  • the ceremony and ritual elements that we worked into the flow of our day
  • our private ceremony that we did all alone
  • the rituals we did before the wedding day to help us step into our new roles as husband and wife
  • the pros of having a welcome party the night before
  • why we chose not to drink during our wedding and the benefits of being sober during your wedding day
  • how we worked with our officiant beforehand to weave our own tradition into our ceremony
  • the changes we felt after getting married and our post-wedding plans!

This week's episode is with none other than the amazing Michelle Shapiro! In this insightful conversation, Michelle, a Holistic RD and self-proclaimed "Queen of the Middle Ground," shares her expertise after years of working with over a thousand clients. Michelle's approach to functional nutrition involves understanding the unique story of each individual, their environment, and the timeline that led them to their current situation. By identifying the root causes, she aims to heal issues rather than just managing them superficially. For instance, there's a big difference between avoiding certain foods for acid reflux versus understanding the deeper reasons behind the issue.

Here's the juice:

  • how Michelle lost 100lbs the WRONG way before becoming a dietitian (and how this led to hypothyroidism)
  • how almost anything that happens emotionally manifests physically, giving a whole new level of validation to symptoms that are "all in your head”
  • anxiety is a sacred messenger telling you something that needs to be addressed in your body (nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar dysregulation, etc.)
  • the root causes of anxiety and digestive disorders
  • what “intuitive eating” actually is + misconceptions
  • the extremes in the nutrition world of “no foods are toxic everything is a chemical" vs “all food must be perfectly clean”
  • why there are no “gut healing foods” that work for everyone
  • emotional and physical factors that contribute to binge eating and how to have compassion for our bodies trying to cope with big emotions

Are you curious about why, in an age of hyper-advanced technology and science, we have more chronic illness than ever? Zach Bush, MD is a renowned physician, researcher, and educator at the forefront of integrative medicine and microbiome research. He shares his revolutionary philosophy on planetary and human health – and how even beyond healing the soil, it all comes back to healing our relationships and deeply witnessing one other.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • Why disease emerges from bodies that are disconnected from nature
  • How “alternative medicine” is just becoming another version of conventional medicine
  • Why truly witnessing one other is essential for creating a new social framework
  • Why the wireless communication network between microbiomes and human cells play a crucial role in your health
  • The wonder of the virome and how viruses actually upgrade your genetics
  • Why you experience strange, vivid, or even lucid dreams when you have a virus
  • What’s actually happening in your mind, body and spirit with long COVID symptoms
  • Why going through sickness and pain pushes you towards your highest self
  • How the old you/your old life needs to die so that you can see the vision for the new you
  • How to diversify your microbiome through food and daily habits (like your route to/from work!)
  • Why people in blue zones live as long as they do (hint: it’s not about eating beans)
  • How the antidote to our glyphosate crisis lies in ancient soil

It’s my honor to share this conversation with entrepreneur, reiki practitioner, activist and breathwork teacher Maryam Ajayi. Maryam is the founder of DiveInWell, an organization dedicated to fostering diversity in the wellness industry by bringing together thought leaders, influencers, and educators who have the power to create deep change through examining how they can show up in their business in terms of accessibility and inclusion. Her company began its legacy by hosting salons and events that foster the open and difficult conversations that must be shared around inclusion and allyship both publicly in the health and wellness world, and privately in our personal lives and circles. DiveInWell has completely rebranded in 2020 and is committed to providing not only massively valuable educational resources, but events, workshops, free swims and so much more. Maryam gives us all the juicy details in the pod as she shares her story, but here’s a quick sparknotes version: when her aspirations of becoming a young, Black, female Republican lobbyist stopped resonating, Maryam uprooted her life and moved from D.C. to NYC. One day, the universe truly had her back when she decided to splurge on a massage in hopes it would relieve her chronic pain. Little did she know, that seemingly innocent decision would completely change her life forever.

Did you know you might be mal-illuminated? If you’re not getting enough exposure to full-spectrum UV light (aka soaking up some sun), your cells might not be working as well as they should. Here to *enlighten* us about how our bodies use UV light and how red light therapy can be beneficial is physical therapist and founder/CEO of BioLight, Dr. Mike Belkowski.

We’ll go over how red light and infrared light therapy works, some of the things it can be used for, and why we all probably need to get outside more. Let’s get juicy!

PS - Thanks to Dr. Mike, I started using a travel-sized red light device from his line called the Shine. I became a believer when my digestion was off the day we filmed this podcast, and he told me to put it directly on my stomach for 10 minutes and see if I felt a difference. Not only did my stomach ache get better – my mind felt calmer too, which he explained is because red light therapy works on the gut-brain axis. I’ve truly loved this device ever since and keep it next to my bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep (a few minutes on my forehead or stomach works like a charm to calm my mind down). I’ve also used it for headaches and a mood boost in the winter months!

If you feel inspired after hearing about red light and want to try the same device I use, BioLight extended code ORGANICOLIVIA (all caps) for a discount on any of their products.

In this episode of What’s the Juice, I had the honor of chatting with brain-genius Louisa Nicola, Founder & Director of Neuro Athletics: a data-driven neuroscience company that provides athletes with scientific strategies to achieve peak performance. Tune in as we delve into the nitty gritty science of how the brain works, and what you can do specifically from home to optimize neuroplasticity and cognition, including:

SLEEP

  • Minimum 8 hours each night, following the 80% rule
  • Natural sunlight as soon as you wake up, for at least 5 minutes
  • Avoiding and/or dimming artificial light come evening
  • Pitch-black environment for optimal sleep

AEROBIC EXERCISE

  • Zone 2 Training — achieve about 65% of your maximum heart rate
  • For example: Walk an incline of ~8-10 around a speed of 3.8 mph for around 30 minutes

ANAEROBIC EXERCISE

  • Focus on 70% of your 1-repetition max (find the maximum weight you can handle for 1 rep, then use 70% of that weight for at least 6 sets/4 reps each)
  • Learn how to squat well and focus on compound movements
  • Invest in a trainer over supplements

STRESS

  • Inhale twice, then exhale (this mimics crying/hyperventilation)
  • Infrared light to reduce neural inflammation
  • Ice baths to create new mitochondria
  • Two grams of both EPA and DHA daily

My podcast has been silent since May 25th, and I'm finally ready to tell you what happened.

This is an episode that I've been ferociously putting off for months because honestly, I'm still actively processing everything that happened. This episode of What's the Juice wasn't premeditated. It wasn't a scheduled recording, or part of our season one production plans. And yet, nothing over the past six months has gone "as planned"... so here we are.

This episode is a raw recount of exactly what went down in March 2020 when BOTH of my parents almost lost their lives to the first wave of the novel Coronavirus. Our story kicks off at the beginning of the first COVID outbreak in New York and this makes it all the more unnerving. None of us knew anything back then. I was trying to figure this virus out in real time as my mom was being put on a ventilator and my dad was terrified for his life. I was called to rely on everything I've ever learned as a humbled herbalist with a newfound, deeper appreciation for Western Medicine to get them through.

This is the next chapter of my growth. I told you guys What's the Juice would be an extension of our community, so Nick and I are here today, on the mic, recording all the wild details about how relentless patient advocacy, experimental drugs, round the clock prayer, and a few earth-side angels saved both my parents lives. You'll hear how facing the potential loss of my loved ones changed me as a person forever and helped me to realize my own mortality (and thus, what's truly important in life). You'll learn how hard it was to advocate for them in the hospital system, and why finding out what was in my mom's feeding tube formula (hint: corn) helped me make decisions that were better for her health and survival. You'll get our side of how the virus presented in our own bodies once we contracted it from my father.

But most of all, you'll hear how LOVE for your family can give you the power to fight even when you don't have an ounce of strength left. This is a story about family coming together and deeeeep generational healing far beyond the virus.

It was the worst time of my life, but it also showed me my relentless will to fight for the people that I love. And I'm a much better person for it today.

Today I’m sitting down with Brooke Baevsky, aka Chef Bae, an LA-based celebrity private chef to athletes, actors, supermodels, and even royals! She has amassed a massive following of “Food Baes'' on TikTok where she breaks the traditional allergy-friendly food stigma with delicious, health-forward & viral recipes. She also founded a non-profit cooking program for inner-city children & families in both Los Angeles and New York City, teaching people how to create a healthy, balanced diet on a limited budget. Chef Bae’s technical background in Holistic Nutrition and Food Science combined with her hilarious, quick-witted personality make this convo and her approach to food so much fun.

Links from the ep:

Here’s the juice:

  • How growing up in a family with tons of food allergies pushed her to get creative in the kitchen at a young age
  • How living in an area with high food insecurity galvanized her to start hosting and teaching community cooking classes for kids
  • The modern-day concept of rebranding anything to make it look like a health food
  • Why she is the antithesis of the “perfect” Instagram chef – making parody content, telling wild stories, and being her authentic self
  • The craziest meal prep that she ever did, like a Caesar salad served at Coachella covered in edible glitter
  • The top bizarre foods and supplements that truly have worked for her professional athlete clients’ performance
  • How to zhuzh up your food and drink with herbs, specifically digestive bitters
  • What a day in the life really looks like for a celebrity private chef (and what she cooks for dogs!)
  • How to decide what to charge people for your services, especially in the beginning when you’re honing your skill and may be struggling with your self-worth
  • The importance of having mentors in your professional space and asking for help
  • How to find your niche and build your brand in the content creation space
  • How we’re transitioning out of the era of perfectly photographed and curated food

Buckle up for this sassy yet super vulnerable conversation with Dr. Scott Lyons, PhD. Dr. Lyons is a holistic psychologist, educator, and author as well as a renowned body-based trauma expert and Doctor of Osteopathy. He helps people break free from cycles of pain, limited beliefs, and trauma to restore vitality and live a more stress-free life. Dr. Lyons' new book, “Addicted to Drama: Healing Dependency on Crisis and Chaos in Yourself and Others” gets into the juice of drama addiction and charts a path to healing, without any sugar coating!

Links from the ep:

Here’s the juice:

  • When Scott realized he was addicted to a drama cycle as a way to distract from processing his own trauma and how he experienced withdrawals once he started dealing with it
  • The endemic of loneliness that we’re experiencing as a society, and why we gossip
  • How the drama that we create is really a survival response to avoid feelings of abandonment
  • The difference between primary emotions (that we feel deep in our core) and secondary emotions (essentially depositories)
  • Why we do something Scott calls “revving” to give us a hit of stress or drama when we’re uncomfortable in a feeling – like scrolling social media or listening to a sad song
  • How overscheduling or hyper performing academically/professionally can actually be a form of drama addiction
  • 3 steps you can take if you want to unwind unhealthy patterns and come back to safety in your body
  • How to break free from trauma bonding in relationships – do you pick fights for no reason?
  • An exercise we can try to slowly and intentionally get more comfortable with being in our bodies instead of numbing out
  • Why every time we take in a stimulus (a stressor) we need to balance it out with movement because that helps us actualize and complete a stress response
