The 2020 (moved to 2021 due to Covid-19) Summer Olympics are now over, but the accomplishments and accolades live on. With all the buzz about the Olympics, we were honored to have the chance to interview former Olympic swimmer AJ Barbar about his path and what he’s doing now.

AJ started out with a love of sports. He loved baseball and basketball and just knew he was going to be a basketball star. He truly excelled in baseball but after years of the game, he was burned out by the time he reached high school.

It was in high school that he found a love for swimming. He joined the team and quickly improved, marking some of the fastest times in his high school’s history. When it came time to go to college, continuing in swim seemed to be the best choice.

He worked hard in college both in the pool and in his studies and he started gaining the notice of larger teams. Before he made his way to the Olympics though, he had to face off against his worst enemy, his own mindset.

Listen as he shares how he overcame some of his greatest mental hurdles and why he avidly works to help kids and teens realize their own dreams. He’s had some amazing coaches and his goal is to pass on their love to others. You won’t want to miss this one.

In this episode:

[00:46] Welcome to the show, AJ!

[01:13] He shares his story and his journey to the Olympics.

[04:48] Listen as AJ discusses how he kept the passion and competitive spirit for his sport.

[07:29] He speaks about what he did once he left high school.

[11:47] He believes you should go to college, where you have a coach that cares about you.

[14:11] AJ discusses the training he went through in college to get to the level he was at.

[17:08] He talks about some moments during his college years when he wanted to give up.

[22:04] Live each day at the moment and treat each practice like it’s a championship practice.

[25:05] The Olympics were his end goal, and he worked each day to make his dream come true.

[32:00] He shares what he did when he wasn’t training.

[33:50] He speaks about transitioning out of swimming and what he did next.

[38:12] AJ discusses how he got the job he has now.

[42:26] He talks about the pros and cons of being in professional sports.

[46:37] He shares how to reach out to him.

[50:27] Thank you for being on the show and sharing your life.

What's Next Gen X Y Z - Cutting in the Confidence with Joshua Santiago
play

09/01/21 • 37 min

One of the goals of this podcast is to share the stories of people in all different places of life. Joshua Santiago started his journey in life in a very rough situation. Listen as he shares his story and why he’s cutting in the confidence for so many around the nation.

Joshua comes from a family who have been entrenched in addiction and abuse. Rather than feeling loved and supported in his early years, he felt abandoned and unwanted. School was not the sanctuary it could have been and instead he started running in crowds that were doing some really bad things.

He dropped out of high school and soon found himself on the wrong end of the law. He had just received his diploma and was on his way to lock up. Rather than letting that defeat him, he went to school to become a barber and found a new lease on life.

When he was denied his barber’s license, he could have given up, but instead he leaned into his ultimate passion. He created a non-profit to help serve the homeless and underprivileged in his and other neighborhoods.

Joshua has had quite a life so far, but what rings most true is his passion to help those who are much less fortunate than he. He is generating real change in the world. Check out the links below if you’d like to support his mission.

In this episode:

[01:05] Joshua Santiago shares the story of his childhood and why he dropped out of school.

[02:55] Why he decided he wanted to be a barber.

[03:41] What was it that made him realize he needed to change the path he was on?

[04:56] Enrolling in barber school changed his life.

[06:19] Learn more about the process of completing barber school.

[08:30] Why did he choose to forego a typical barber role and start a non-profit?

[12:31] What is it like being on the road and traveling to different cities?

[15:44] How did he make the decision to travel with his work?

[19:14] His background and family life has helped him to connect more with the people he helps.

[21:26] Joshua shares his advice for getting started in making changes in your community.

[24:14] Pay attention to other people’s stories. Learn through their experience.

[28:09] Joshua shares his plans and dreams for the future.

[30:16] Listen as he shares the pros and cons of what he does.

[33:59] Has he ever considered writing a book?

This season has been so much fun! We’ve been on a roller coaster ride of learning and growing but in the midst of it all, we’ve succeeded in our goal. We want to bring you the stories and experiences from people in different industries with varying backgrounds and levels of education.

Because it’s okay if you don’t think college is right for you!

Welcome to our Season 1 Look Back. We’re taking a quick peek at the episodes we’ve had this year and giving you some additional insights and thoughts from behind the scenes. This first season has focused on creatives in different industries and it’s been fun to see how they’ve gotten to where they are and what continues to drive them.

One major theme we’ve noticed between all of these amazing guests was their willingness to think outside of the box. Several of them were on traditional tracks, climbing the corporate ladder, and working to use the degree that they got. Then something pushed them off course and drew them into a passion that they’ve now turned into a business.

This was such a fun season and we cannot wait to bring you season two. That’s right! We are coming back for more but this time we’re focusing on the legal field in our Justice Series. So stay tuned for our next set of amazing guests and episodes!

[20:56] On episode 5 we had teenage model E’Naiya Nikole.

[23:06] Listen as we share about episode 6 with our guest Carlos Sainte.

[25:35] Mommy and Me was episode 7 this episode stole our hearts.

What's Next Gen X Y Z - Origin Story: Part I

Origin Story: Part I

What's Next Gen X Y Z

play

03/10/21 • 46 min

PGD Innovations and What’s Next Gen XYZ all started with a dream and a book, but it is so much more than that. Listen as Rachael and Eunice share their personal origin stories and why their collaboration is so important to them.

Rachael IS our audience. Despite growing up in a military family with their goals and dreams on track, she never felt any level of mentorship from teachers and bosses until she was already in college.

In fact, she didn’t know what she wanted to do but because she was doing great in track and field, she got a scholarship and then decided to go the college route. Fast-forward to her freshman year and things were not going as planned.

Finally, her coach stepped in and decided to mentor her and she made it through. After college she held a variety of jobs and no matter where she started she always ended up being given management and leadership responsibilities.

But her passion was writing. She came up with the idea of Sophie and Olivia based on her twin nieces but the stories are all hers.

Enter Eunice and what was once meant to be a business to protect and support Rachael’s literary work, turned into an entire cause designed to help youngsters through mentorship. Now PGD Innovations is all about sharing the stories of people everywhere who have zig-zagged their way into the careers and businesses of their dreams.

Listen in to learn more about these two amazing ladies and what you can expect from What’s Next Gen XYZ in the future.

In this episode:

[07:47] Why the name represents a dream and all of us who are “different” during childhood.

[11:08] Rachael shares more about her story and growing up without good “job” mentors.

[14:32] Track got her to college and her coach helped her make it through.

[18:24] Eunice shares some of the various jobs she has had through the years.

[21:11] How Rachael got involved with writing.

[22:28] Examples of stories that Rachael could share with the audience and started writing.

[24:01] Did you know you can’t use high efficiency laundry soap in a regular washer?

[27:25] How Sophie and Olivia came to be.

[29:14] When Rachael and Eunice met, they realized how much further they could take this venture beyond just protecting the book.

[32:20] The story behind Rachael meeting her now-publisher.

[36:30] More about their story and how the book evolved and changed their ideas on business.

[38:13] Why we decided to start the podcast as a supplement to the book and overall message.
