WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 2

Another episode with my good friend Robin (@conroc) where we continued to have deep talks. We talked a lot about mental health, seeking out therapy/professional health to help with figuring out what to do when feeling lost and not having direction in life during our adulthood. This podcast episode was all about feelings and talking about feelings which men in general are pretty bad at doing, so it was nice Robin and I were able to talk about our feelings to each so freely. We also talked about growing up in and Asian family in the west and about being old and how we still got to get out of our comfort zone in order to grow and improve. It was a great conversation, so don't miss out and listen to it!

We went pretty deep again so make sure to listen to the whole episode. And if you want to follow Robin, check him out on Instagram at @conroc. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, you can at @kyle.lkhhk.

Again thank you so much for listening and supporting the podcast. I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy this episode and make sure to share with your people if you find this entertaining and valuable. Now here is WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3.1 FEATURING ROBIN.

ep 1.2

{We want our kids to watch tv and be like, that Asian actor in there is very normal. It's normalize, it's not like "omg dad, there's an Asian guy!"} - Jack

In part 2 of my conversation with Jack and Gavin of DIU Podcast, we talked about a topic that we talk often about amongst ourselves which is Asian representation in the media.

We talked about how Asian representation in the media was like, how Asian representation in media is right now, and what we hope Asian representation in media would be like in the future.

We also talked about who is able to tell Asian specific stories and if it even matters who tells it as long as they are good. To end the episode, we recommended some good Asian representation media to check out and also talked about a famous Diaspora Asian.

Listen and find out who we talked about.

What Kind of Asian Are You? - The Creative Chimera - XinYi Tan / Don't Be Strangers Podcast / Ep 77

Send us a text

Today's episodes with the super creative and interesting XinYi Tan from the "Don't Be Strangers" Podcast. Kyle, our host was on an episode of "Don't Be Strangers" check that out as well! Episode
We talked about finding your passions, creativity, being creative and loving art but not making it a career intentionally and the journey she took to become a creative chimera nomad.
More about XinYi Tan:
I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and moved with my family to Dallas, Texas at age 7. My first couple of years in school were a huge struggle. English was not my first language and entering 2nd grade after skipping almost a year of school due to the move made making friends quite difficult. But even after learning English,

I never felt quite at home... anywhere.

  1. Culturally, I wasn’t fully American, but when my family and I visited Malaysia, I was painfully aware that I didn’t quite belong there either.
  2. When it came to my passions, I could never make up my mind on a specific creative outlet or medium to hone — not because of indecisiveness (ok, maybe a little bit), but because I find joy in learning, remixing, and over-complicating mixed-media projects. But before I found pride in calling myself a creative chimera, I was hopelessly lost in how to identify my art and therefore myself.
  3. Being aromantic meant that I couldn’t relate to 99% of the stories represented in pop culture.

In short, I thought I was an alien. With every friend that I’ve found (who listened to me wholeheartedly and confided in me sincerely), I began to feel less and less alien and more and more at home on Earth. I began to feel like I belonged.

Asian Enough MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9_yrqlbb6k

Today we have Chara Kai-Le, singer-songwriter/producer based in Toronto, Canada. She recently released her song, Asian Enough that I came across that I relate to a lot. The song speaks to the feelings of many third culture kids on whether or not they are "Asian Enough" or should that even be a thing?

In our conversation, we found out about Chara's background of moving around everywhere when she was a kid, living in England facing racism and culture shock that lead her to be quite pro-Asian and kind of Anti-White and how music was the thing that saved her when she was younger. Last but not least, we got into talking about Chara's creative journey and her road to being an independent singer-songwriter/producer trying to make it in Toronto while the world is going through the pandemic and all the social unrest. We definitely talked about her song, Asian Enough as well.

Please support Chara and her music as it's always great to see Asian creatives pursuing their passion in the arts and given how she is creating content that really speaks to third culture kids makes her even more awesome.

What Kind of Asian Are You? - Becoming The Real You (By Learning Chinese) | Angela Lin | Ep102

In this episode of What Kind of Asian Are You?, host Kyle Leung reconnects with Angela Lin, co-founder of Real You Mandarin and co-host of But Where Are You Really From?. Angela shares her journey of creating an online Mandarin course tailored for ABCs (American-Born Chinese) and ABTs (American-Born Taiwanese), discussing language barriers, cultural identity, and the challenges of bridging East and West. She reflects on her evolving sense of Asian American identity, her experiences living across Asia, and the personal struggles that inspired her to help others express their real selves in Mandarin.

Tune in as Angela and Kyle explore language learning, diaspora identity, and the power of meaningful conversations.

------

Angela Lin is a Taiwanese-American podcaster (But Where Are You Really From?) and co-founder of Real You Mandarin. Through the podcast, Angela has spent years discussing the unique cultural and identity challenges faced by Asian-Americans, and was inspired to create Real You Mandarin through that exploration.

Real You Mandarin (RYM) is an online Mandarin course built for ABCs, ABTs, and other advanced Mandarin speakers who want to be able to express their “real selves” in the same way they are able to in English.

Grounded in contextual, real life scenarios, the self-paced course is video-based, featuring realistic dialogue centered on topics these individuals would actually want to talk about with their family and friends - from everyday topics like pop culture and current events, to meatier ones like mental health and media representation. Unlike standard textbook Chinese, RYM is focused on filling in the gaps of the vocabulary, slang, and common references most immediately useful to one’s real life.

Check out the full syllabus and preview a free lesson at https://www.realyoumandarin.com/launch. Let us help you express the real you when you speak Mandarin.
