Do you enjoy waking up with no alarm clock, no appointments and no need to be anywhere or do anything?

That’s how I feel when I wake up on a Sunday morning imagine living your life like it was Sunday everyday. Do you think you would accomplish as much as you do if the reality was, every day is Sunday?

I’ve been self-employed for over 25 years and I’ve always said I don’t really feel like I’m working because I’m doing stuff I’m passionate about. That is what it’s all about really, when you find yourself working on a Sunday, not realising you actually are being productive and making money. There’s no such thing as Sunday-itis in my life!

Covid has certainly made us think differently, especially in the way that we work. A high percentage of us are now working from our homes, so distinguishing the difference between work and life is becoming more and more difficult. We all learn from each, other some people struggle with working from home, but I struggle working from an office.

Some of the advantages of working from home:

  • You don’t need to pre-prepare lunch
  • You save money on office rental
  • You can claim some of your expenses
  • You can justify a coffee machine
  • The office commute is merely footsteps

Some of the disadvantages of working from home:

  • Cabin fever
  • Motivation
  • No sense of direction
  • Human contact
  • Working all hours

What a wicked couple of weeks I must’ve been naughty in a former life or this one!

As many of you know I’m planning My Trip and I leave on Friday the 13th, unlucky date for some, as I’m heading to China, Bangladesh and coming home via New Delhi India. This intrepid journey is to celebrate my 50th. My main goal is to travel on top of a train in Bangladesh and take some awesome street photography, as well as a whole lot of video blogs for my TikTok account.
Shit happens and shit happened when my car was parked on the side of the road last week. A 17-year-old guy who wasn’t concentrating on his driving, was dropping off a customers vehicle after it had been serviced from Blackwells Mazda. He crashed into my vehicle and set off his airbags, he went on two wheels flying past the doctors surgery window. I ran out to see what had happened and if he was ok and noticed he had smashed into my car.
As you can imagine this wasn’t really something I needed to deal with just before Christmas, especially when I’m arranging my holiday. Everything went blurry and I didn’t really want to burden the young fella who made the mistake so when I had a moment to re-analyse the situation I started to assess what I needed to do.
With the advice I got from members of ELITE : SIX I was soon in a rental car/van at no cost. Did you realise if you’re involved in a not-at-fault accident you are legally entitled to a rental car and there is a company setup to handle all this for you, Right2Drive.
Next, I was instructed how the process works best to get my vehicle written off. The powers that be were telling me that it wouldn’t be written off because there’s too much money tied up in the new vehicle.
Mike from Ferrymead Automotive to turn down a $17,000 repair job to give me the result I wanted, an unselfish act of bravery for any business person!
Next minute the insurance company tells me that they going to settle for $24,500. However, the finance left on the vehicle was for $28,000, it was a bit of a hard pill to swallow. With the advice from my insurance company, who said they were batting for me, suggested if I didn’t agree on the figure, I could go back to the valuer and tell him I disagree with this valuation. The phone call went something like this, “Hi I’m Danny, you valued my car” he said “I value hundreds of cars, I’m not familiar with the vehicle you are talking about, put it in an email and I’ll answer it tomorrow” and he hangs up!

08/18/20 • 22 min

You are listening to Danny, on WHAT : DE HEK podcast. This is the place where I share my experience, knowledge and skills.

Danny de Hek 0:16
Yeah, so welcome along. Helen Oakes and I’m Danny de Hek. If youre interested. Now this is Helen’s first podcast of her own, we’re going to set up Helen. Helen is actually a photographer. She’s also my partner. And since COVID we’ve been looking for, to market ourselves in different wonderful ways. So as you can imagine... a photographer is having a great time at the moment because we can’t get out in public so much. So why don’t you first tell me how you actually first got involved in photography, and why you love doing photography.
Helen Oakes 0:52
Okay, I first got involved probably in my 20s, I would say, even a, well actually even a little bit in my teens, I quite liked photography and I had a tiny little camera, it was like a little flipout camera an Instamax camera. And I got that as a birthday present one time, and I thought that was the bees knees and I went around taking photos. It’s the sort of camera that you put these flashes, big long...um there’s about 12 flashes that you stick on the top of it.

Danny de Hek 1:20
Oh yeah, they look like the blue bottles on the beach.

Helen Oakes 1:24
Yeah, so you put those on the top of the camera, and you take photos. And it was really cool. I thought it was really fun, really cool. And then as I got older, I used to watch my brother taking photos and he had a SLR, which was a Pentax camera and I thought Wow, that looks really cool, professional looking camera. So then I decided I’d get myself a camera. So I got myself a Sigma camera, no, Minolta camera with a Sigma lens on it. And it had all the manual dials on it. And I was like, Oh, this looks a bit tricky, but I’ll have a go. And I used to always put it on one setting and I thought if I put it on this setting I’m bound to get good photos. So I’d always put it on one setting. And then I gradually started playing around a bit more with it and started learning more. And then I used to look at my brother’s photos and go, Wow, they’re really amazing. I want to get further in the photography field. Yeah.

Danny de Hek 2:16
So what type of photography would you say is your genre, as the say?

Helen Oakes 2:20
My genre would be people photography. I love taking photos of people. I love taking photos of sports people.

Danny de Hek 2:27
Right, have you done any events that come to mind that you’re really proud of?

Helen Oakes 2:30
Yeah, yeah, I love doing gymnastic events like National Gymnastic competitions, right. And I love doing just portraits of people, for workshoots and also for sport shoots.

play

01/08/21 • 42 min

You're listening to Danny, on WHAT : DE HEK podcast. This is the place where I share my experience, knowledge and skills.

Transcribed by Otter

Danny de Hek 0:00
Welcome along, Helen, I’m Danny de Hek Blog2Social asked me to do be part of a case study. And they gave me a questionnaire and I looked at other oh my goodness, I’m dyslexic. I don’t want to write this back. And they suggested they actually do a video, case study. And they may pick out the bits they want. However, in the meantime, I thought make a interesting blog, and also a podcast. So Helen is my partner. And she has just recently started using Blog2Social good persons, you’ve probably got a good understanding of what she was trying to accomplish, and are sort of taking it to another level. So they’ve given us this questionnaire, they’ve got quite a few questions. So rather than bore you guys with more intro, let’s get Helen is going to ask me the questions, and I’m gonna see how I do when answering them.

Helen Oakes 0:52
Who are you? And what’s your story

Danny de Hek 0:54
I already said that. I’m Danny, Danny de Hek . And I used to be a mobile internet consultant. And I used to travel around New Zealand building tourism related websites. And alongside that, I started writing a lot of travel information, all things New Zealand. And now I have this massive portal of about 1000 travel related blogs on my website. So this software really interest me when I saw what it does.

Helen Oakes 1:18
What year did you start

Danny de Hek 1:20
Back in 1993, I got interested in computers and around about 1995, he sold everything I owned, and bought a laptop and literally hitchhiked around New Zealand telling people as a mobile internet consultant

Helen Oakes 1:33
What context are you blogging in?

Danny de Hek 1:36
Maybe travel and tourism related personal stories, if you went to my website to hit.com, you’ll see that I have a ramble of all different things. I used every website that was targeted on travel and tourism, and it was called New Zealand’s Information Network. And it just sort of died because of Google AdWords. So I’ve grabbed all the content out of that, and chucked it into dehek.com, which is all about my personal brand.

Helen Oakes 2:01
So it’s your field of expertise, travel, and tourism.

[00:00:00] Danny de Hek: Hello, beautiful people. How are you doing? I’m Danny de Hek. Thank you for pressing play and listening to my video. I got to be in the New York Times. I got a whole page on Danny de Hek busting Ponzi scheme that they called me the Crypto Ponzi Scheme. Avenger, what a name. And that means I’ve actually gained some followers while people who subscribe to my YouTube channel.
[00:00:25] Danny de Hek: So thank you so much. If you’re one of those people, and you may not have seen my videos before, I record them like I’m live streaming. And then I upload them later on. I don’t like editing much. I’m also dyslexic. So if you read my show notes and look at the timestamps, cuz you might wanna jump forward to the part you wanna watch, then you might find some spelling mistakes.
[00:00:47] Danny de Hek: And I really love people who comment on my videos. It’s your your choice. You can comment on this video and tell me what you think and if you hit the thumbs up button that tells YouTube you like my videos and it sends it out to the masses. And then I can help name and shame these people that are running Ponzi scheme.
[00:01:05] Danny de Hek: And that’s my main goal. My goal at the moment is to be a full-time YouTuber and it’s not easy becoming a YouTuber. So I really value having you here. Now I’m gonna tell you a little bit of a story about something that happened last Friday that was before I was famous in the New York Times. Had a young fella from an SEO company telephoned.
[00:01:25] Danny de Hek: Now, if you’ve got a small to medium sized business and you have a website, you’re probably experiencing the same thing I’m experiencing. You get in emails every day from people. I delete these emails. The same people email me in two days time asking me if I had a chance to read their emails. So when someone tele phones me based in New Zealand where I’m from and claims that they can do the SEO for my website and don’t really understand my business or have they really researched my business it really annoys me.
[00:01:58] Danny de Hek: So this is the splash screen that we’ll be doing today, website design and development companies. Sorry I said that wrong. Website design and development SEO companies. Are you being exploited? Is SEO a scam? Now I’m pretty aggressive to anyone that claims they can do my SEO, but. I take a lot of my SEO for granted because I have some good practices when I’m doing new content now I am everywhere.
