Welcome to Geektown - Episode 68: The Replacements - Batman
play

10/02/20 • 16 min

Last time we did a “Replacements” episode, we looked at the various Robins. This time, we dive deep in on his mentor, and look at all the people who have been the official Batman in the regular DCU. There’s a little crossover between the two, so if you haven’t listened to Episode 58, I recommend doing so first.

The new MCU show starring Elizabeth Olson and Paul Bettany is out on Disney+, and is so unusual that we decided to examine the show as closely as possible, discussing the connections between it and the Marvel Comics starring these characters. Kurt is joined by personal friend and frequent question asker Joel L. (an MCU fan, but not a regular comic reader) in order to see the show from all sides.

Welcome to Geektown - Episode 84: Who Else Are The New Warriors? (Volume 1)
play

03/26/21 • 26 min

For the first anniversary of the podcast’s release, Kurt’s favorite hero Speedball was introduced. In the 2nd-Anniversary episode, he introduced the rest of his teammates in the New Warriors, or at least the members of the team when it was first formed. For year 3, it’s time to look at the other heroes who joined the roster sometime after the first issue, but still in the original 75-issue run.

Welcome to Geektown - Episode 128: She-Hulk - A Deep Dive (Episode 2)
play

08/29/22 • 88 min

Continuing the Deep Dive into the She-Hulk show, I get a much needed female perspective in the form of Brooke Heyn along with the returning Andy Wilson, both from the Kiss Your Franchise Goodbye podcast. In addition to breaking down the show, we veer into other subjects both serious and frivolous, including issues of mental control and consent to comics as case law.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Being a very proud geek, I've always been the one my friends come to with geeky questions. "Who's that in the post-credits scene?" "What's 'Crisis' in DC comics?" "There's more than one color of Kryptonite?" I wanted a place where anyone could ask those questions, even if they don't have someone in their life who is willing and able to answer them in a way that doesn't make them feel excluded for not already knowing.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

Hopefully, they learn something and gain a new appreciation for comics, superheroes, or any of the other geeky topics I touch on.

Which episode should someone start with?

The answer to almost any question about DC Comics depends on you understanding "Pre-Crisis" vs. "Post-Crisis" and so Episode 1 covers that and all the other reboots of the DC Comics universe. I've remastered that first episode, so preferably listen to that version (Season 2, Episode 1), as the audio is vastly improved.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I love doing the "Deep Dives" on the various Marvel TV shows like "WandaVision," "Loki," and "She-Hulk," going through the show with a guest (or two) as each episode releases. While those episodes are more work for me in editing them, they are so much fun to record.

Which episode are you most proud of?

I think episode 59, "What to Expect at the D&D Table" is the one I'm most proud of, as it's (hopefully) helpful for anyone who has never played D&D (or other role-playing game) to understand what will happen at their very first session, so that they're more prepared, as it can be very overwhelming if you try to absorb all this new information at once.

What is your vision for your show?

Like I've said, I want to be a place where fledgling geeks of all stripes can come and ask their questions in a safe space. I'd love to especially get more questions about non-comic book related topics.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Star Trek: The Next Conversation. The co-hosts are so obviously good friends, and that kind of camaraderie is impossible to fake. And as professional TV writers, they have a unique perspective on what makes an episode good or bad.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I was looking for a unique name or phrase that gives the idea behind the show. "Welcome to" points out that it is an introduction to the topics discussed, while "Geektown" tells you that it's a vast landscape of various topics, even if they all fall under the "geek" heading. I'm especially proud of my tagline..."Welcome to Geektown. Population...Us."
