How did Brian Shaffer disappear from a crowded bar, surrounded by surveillance cameras and friends, never to be seen again? This week on Solvable Mysteries we revisit the compelling and mysterious cold case of Brian Shaffer, a medical student from OSU whose disappearance has mystified and intrigued the nation and which hasn't been solved yet -- but could it?
During this True Crime podcast episode we review the facts and rumors swirling around the missing persons cold case of Brian Shaffer, a medical student from Ohio State University who disappeared one night while bar-hopping with friends after experiencing high levels of stress around cramming for midterms, and the recent death of his mother from cancer. What is fascinating about this case is that there is video footage of Brian Shaffer right before he vanished, and the circumstances around his disappearance are eerie given the seeming lack of motive and the strange phenomena of Brian vanishing from a crowded, popular bar with only 2 exits, both of which had security cameras monitoring all traffic in and out of the establishment. We review and discuss all theories as to what could have happened, including misadventure, homicide, making a new life, and even the Smiley Face Serial Killer. Can anyone solve this cold case?

Weeknight Mysteries - The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann - New Suspect #49
play

11/06/20 • 89 min

Could the investigation of a new German suspect in the Madeleine McCann kidnapping lead to solving this case and finding her? This week on Solvable Mysteries we discuss the newest developments on the German suspect, Christian Brückner, now being investigated for the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann,a 3 year old girl from Leicester, England who disappeared from her room in a Portugese resort in 2007.
Welcome to Solvable Mysteries Podcast, hosted by Juras Sim and co-hosted by Glenn Highcove. During this episode we discuss the disturbing background and accusations surrounding German convict Christian Brückner, who has been imprisoned for sexual assault on senior citizens, as well as other related charges. German and English authorities now suspect Christian Brückner's involvement in the disappearance of other young children over the past 26 years. We review the reasons for this new scrutiny, and critically analyze the actions of the German, British, and Portugese authorities over the history of this case. We also discuss the negligent and irresponsible actions of the Tapas Seven, and how their carelessness and seeming prioritization of drinking and eating restaurant food over the safety of their children led to this situation. Especially maddening was that babysitting was available and recommended by the resort. Finally, we ask whether the kidnapper in the McCann case potentially had inside help from someone who knew the children were being left unattended, such as a resort or restaurant worker. Our hope is that this new scrutiny on the suspect in Germany may need to a breakthrough in the case.

What is the truth behind the conviction and subsequent exoneration of Amanda Knox for the Murder of Meredith Kercher?
Welcome to Solvable Mysteries Podcast, hosted by Juras Sim and co-hosted by Glenn Highcove. In this episode we discuss the famous and controversial case of Amanda Knox, who was accused with her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, of killing Amanda's roommate. Knox's roommate, Meredith Kercher, was found locked in her room, with the rest of the apartment in disarray, and blood in different rooms. Later analysis would trace much of the DNA evidence to Rudy Guede, a known burglar and casual acquaintance of Knox and her neighbors, but also someone they did not know well.
The subsequent investigation and trial was filled with controversy and irregularities, with the prosecution and investigation team positing wild theories on what happened to Meredith, concluding that she was killed in a strange love triangle/encounter gone wrong. We discuss the many strange and questionable tactics the police took during this investigation and trial, the apparent violation of Amanda and Sollecito's rights and privacy, as well as the strange behavior of Amanda Knox during the entire period before, during and after her conviction. We also review the latest Amanda Knox developments, including her subsequent appeal, exoneration, re-conviction, and final exoneration by the Italian justice system. We think you will find this episode a Solvable Mystery to remember.

Weeknight Mysteries - The Mystery of the Tunguska Event #37
play

09/18/20 • 67 min

Did a meteor cause a 30 megaton explosion over Siberia in 1908? This week on Solvable Mysteries we discuss the Tunguska event, an explosion by a space object that even now brings up many questions and concerns about our ability to defend ourselves from space objects.
Welcome to Solvable Mysteries Podcast, hosted by Juras Sim and co-hosted by Glenn Highcove. During this episode we discuss the mysterious Tunguska event, where a massive explosion flattened 830 square miles of forest. While the world is fortunate that this did not happen in a populated area of the world, it is a stark warning of the dangers we face from meteors and other celestial objects that might strike the Earth. It also is a prime example of the destruction that comes from a multi-megaton explosion above a target area, a scary foreshadowing of the potential carnage a nuclear attack would make with similar levels of explosive impact.

Weeknight Mysteries - What Happened to Lars Mittank? #89
play

04/20/21 • 117 min

Are there any updates on why Lars Mittank disappeared from a crowded Bulgarian airport in 2014, never to be seen again? This week on Solvable Mysteries we revisit and investigate the strange and mysterious disappearance of Lars Mittank, a 28 year-old German tourist who disappeared from an airport in Bulgaria in July, 2014 shortly after calling his mother with tales of being followed by four strange men and accusations that his credit information was being stolen by his hotel.
During this episode we return to the famous case of Lars Mittank, who found himself stranded in Bulgaria after getting his eardrum injured during a fight at a resort in Golden Sands, Bulgaria. We analyze the details of his confrontation with other tourists over the football rivalry of Werder Bremen with Borussia Dortmund, and whether the subsequent claim of an assault and ongoing persecution was a sign of a mental break or other illness.
We then examine his injury to determine whether it had a role in Lars's subsequent strange and paranoid behavior. We also discuss whether the medication he was on for his injury, Cefuroxime, could have caused a side effect or interacted with an undiagnosed medical condition like PKU. Finally, we discuss what could have happened to Lars after he ran out of the airport in a panic.
