Weebology Podcast - Ep. 22: Is Vinland Saga the Anime show of 2019??
play

10/21/19 • 58 min

We go in depth on one of the best series premiering this year, Vinland Saga! This show is an adaptation of a Japanese historical Manga series by Makuto Yukimura. The series began in the Shonen Magazine aimed at young people and later moved to the monthly manga magazine Afternoon, which is more of a Seinen type magazine. The Anime began in the Summer 2019 season of Anime and was animated by Wit Studio. You may recognize the name from series like Attack on Titan and Kabenari of the Iron Fortress.
Vinland Saga is set in 1013 AD England, which has been mostly conquered by the Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard. As King Sweyn nears death, his sons, Prince Harald and Prince Canute, are arguing over his succession. The story draws elements from historical accounts of the period such as The Flateyjarbók, The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Eric the Red. - Wikipedia: Vinland Saga.
The story revolves around Thors the Ogre and his son Thorfinn. They carry on Viking tradition and participate in many battles. Thorfinn grows up far from home and works to become an elite fighter worthy of a seat in Valhalla.
What did you all think of Vinland Saga? We loved it let us know what yall thought!

Welcome back to class family, this week we took a crack at the grandfather of the modern isekai in the form of the classic Sword Art Online, let us tell you how to feel about this show lol. Asuna is bae though tbh...
Sword Art Online (Japanese: ソードアート・オンライン, Hepburn: Sōdo Āto Onrain) is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. This week your Weebologists are back at it again with potentially our favorite segments, the splendiferous Pitch or Ditch and the Worst of Weeb (still a working title). We start off the episode by thanking our reviewers on Apple Podcasts!
Special shoutout to googe it dog, Econ93, SlurrySlinger, kingderah, PK Yeet, MCvetmed, joncon10, Physique Brah, and Weebengineer! Seriously y'all we can't thank you enough for not only listening to our mad ravings and machinations but also to take the time to write us a review is absolutely huge! If you would like to be mentioned the next time we talk about our reviews make sure to leave one here --> Weebology iTunes
In our Worst of Weeb segment we are working through the worst shows in 2019. We started off with a truly revolting piece of media called Pastel Memories. Pastel Memories is a show that was devised rather diabolically to advertise what we can only assume is one of the worst video games of the year as well. We were saddened for the 2,500 other people who subjected themselves to the show and rated it on MyAnimeList. I mean the disappointment is truly palpable in this review of the show, y'all reach out to Ricky and support him for being the brave soul that watched all 11 episodes of this travesty.
On the flip side we brought back potentially the most stimulating segment in our show and worked up another round of pitches for Pitch or Ditch. Ricky pitched Meglobox and I pitched Jormungund. Make sure to check out our pitches and tell us whether y'all would watch them based off that alone.

Originally printed in the Weekly Shonen Champion magazine and written/illustrated by Paru Itagaki, Beastars has become something of s smash hit in the Anime realm. The story takes place in a modern Japan, with anthropomorphic animals running about, running the city, going to high school, and indulging in black market goods. The show was animated by CG Studio Orange and released outside of Japan on Netflix in mid March 2020.
Legoshi, a large gray wolf, is a timid and quiet student of Cherryton Academy where he lives in a dorm with several other carnivorous students including his outgoing Labrador friend, Jack. As a member of the school's drama club, Legoshi works as a stagehand and supports the actors of the club headed by the star pupil Louis, a red deer.

Out of nowhere, Tem the alpaca is brutally murdered and devoured in the night, setting off a wave of unease and distrust between the herbivore and carnivore students. At the same time, Legoshi has a fateful encounter with Haru, a small dwarf rabbit, and begins developing complex feelings for her. -Wikipedia

Weebology Podcast - Ep. 80: Does it Anime? Blood of Zeus Edition
play

11/30/20 • 57 min

Blood of Zeus
Set in the world of Greek mythology, the series revolves around Heron, the demigod son of Zeus, trying to save Olympus and Earth. Though Heron himself is a character created for the show, the existence of such demigods born of the union between a god and a human is implied to be common in the original myths. The show claims in its prologue to be one of the tales 'lost to history' rather than passed down with our current canon of Greek myths. The show features gods, giants, automata, and mythical mounts from the original tales.

Kimetsu no Yaiba aka Demon Slayer is an Anime by Ufotable Studio premiering in the Spring 2019 season and running to Summer 2019 season of Anime. Demon Slayer is a highly selling manga originally going into the Weekly Shoenen Jump magazine starting in 2016.
In this installment of the Weebology Podcast we take a jaunt into the gorgeous anime Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer in English). We talk through setting characters and plot. We leave any major spoilers to the last 15 minutes of the episode so it is friendly to newbie and veteran demon slayer alike.
Plot of Kimetsu No Yaiba: In Taisho-era Japan, Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister from happening to others. - Wikipedia Demon Slayer
We think this is a guaranteed finalist this year for Anime of the Year, Do you all agree or do you have a different pick?

Gleipnir is a new Anime running in the Spring 2020 season. The shows animator is Pine Jam, which is relatively unknown. Their most well known product is the OVA Hozuki's Coolheadedness. This show is WILD bros. I sorta thought the OP sucked and was borderline annoying, with a weird high pitched screech. The show's genre is Mystery, Ecchi, Action, Supernatural, and a Seinin.
The story centers on Shuichi Kagaya, a high school student with an unusual secret. He has the ability to transform into a monster resembling a giant mascot costume complete with a zipper down his back and a large cartoonish smile. After rescuing fellow classmate, Kurea "Claire" Aoki, from a warehouse fire, she sadistically decides to use him to hunt down other monsters in search of her sister. - Wikipedia
Tower of God centers around a boy called Twenty-Fifth Bam, who has spent most of his life trapped beneath a vast and mysterious Tower, with only his close friend, Rachel, to keep him company. When Rachel enters the Tower, Bam manages to open the door into it as well, and faces challenges at each floor of this tower as he tries to find his closest companion.
As the story progresses, the reader gradually explores the lore, history, and motivations of important characters and factions that drive or try to change the fate of the tower, for more than 10,000 years. Mysteries are gradually unveiled and added, as the readers learn about the struggles and triumphs of the inhabitants of the tower. - Wikipedia

Weebology Podcast - Ep. 41: Pitch or Ditch Redux: Megalo Box and Jormungand
play

03/02/20 • 58 min

This week your favorite professors are revisiting our pitches from episode 36, Megalobox and Jormungand!
Megalo box was is a show from 2018 produced by TMS Entertainment consisting of 13 episodes. TMS has been responsible for some of the best anime in history including Akira, Lupin the third, Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple, Case Closed Detective Conan, and of course the number 1 show of 2019 Dr. Stone ;) ! The show follows Junkyard Dog as he makes his way from illegal mech boxing match fixing to the top ranking league in the land. Junkyard is accompanied by a shifty coach old man Nanbu and a young tech genius orphan Sachio. His goal is to win the Megalo boxing championship and beat his rival Yuri.
Jormungand is a show from 2012 animated by White Fox Studio touting 12 episodes for the first season. White Fox has animated some of the most successful shows in the history of Anime including Steins; Gate, Re Zero, Devil is a Part-Timer, and Akame Ga Kill. This show shares a very similar vibe to some of these works also animated by White Fox. Jormungand details the life of Jonah, a child soldier, who works on the personal bodyguard detail of one of the most prolific arms dealers and smugglers Koko Hekmatyar. The only problem is Jonah hates arms dealers because they sell instruments of death. Will Jonah start caring for his new family or will he escape and strike out on his own?
Let us know if you have watched either show and whether you agree with our commentary!
