Dustin and Steve talk about life as a wedding photographer when you have a child surprise in the middle of wedding season. Okay, not a child surprise. This isn't the Witcher... but an unexpected bundle of joy nonetheless. They also talk about how you should react if a client doesn't really want you at the wedding. As well as the pains of shooting a wedding video solo when things like card reading are brought up on the day of the wedding, moments before the ceremony as something the client wants to do before the ceremony. It's a tough week. Beer Talk: Steve - Fuity Nuggets X2 by 450 North Brewing Company Dustin - All Day IPA by Founders brewing Company Q&A: Why do clients still ask to see examples of photographer's work when photographers post their work everywhere online? How long did you keep shooting weddings after getting pregnant? How long after childbirth till you started shooting again? How did you feel? What considerations do you need to make before having an associate shooter work for you? Follow Jenn Van Elk: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Want more? This week Steve and Dustin talk to Kathy Netti and Mollie Beach of Kodak about Kodak Professional Select. This is a new software/service from Kodak that helps photographers cull their photo shoots quickly by using AI to group photos and surface the best photos, so that you don't have to look at all the photos where your subjects are blinking. Kodak Professional Select also helps you cull details too by grouping photos of objects in a similar way to how it does photos of people, so you can pick out the most in focus, best looking detail shots from your wedding day too. Steve and Dustin also pitch some pretty great ideas to Kathy and Mollie for Kodak to use going off the basis of this amazing technology, like a special Midnight Edition of the software.

Wedding Photo Hangover - Ep. #181 - Devil's Avocados with Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog
play

06/28/21 • 56 min

Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog and Mason Photography joins us this week to talk about life, photography, music, cryptocurrency, scientific films, dogecoin and the movie Whiplash. Steve and Adam also talk about conference photography, political photography, and commercial work. The also talk about whether or not your mortgage company cares about how you made your money.

Q&A:
Should I let my husband second shoot for other female photographers when he's never shown an interest in it before but one of my competitors keeps asking if she can hire him?
I grew my beard out and we stopped booking clients, should I shave my beard so we can make money again?
My sister thinks her photographer deleted her wedding photos because I brought my camera to the wedding. She's demanding I pay for a new wedding or else produce a complete gallery of her wedding when I didn't shoot anything but getting ready. What do I do?
I booked a client at a discount because I was supposed to get show photos from their BDSM conference on my site but when I showed up they took my phone and cards and forbid me from saving any photos anywhere. Can I ask for more money now since they didn't live up to their end of the agreement?

This week Steve talks with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer. They talk a lot about Casey's podcast and how he makes it. They also talk about his Heiland 3-Cell Flash Gun. Look it's a pretty tangent heavy episode where Casey mostly entertains Steve with stories about being an actor. He was up for a roll in Vanilla Sky and he was up to do the voice of the Geico Gecko, and he shares with Steve why he didn't get those parts. It's all interlaced with chat about photography and the need for self-care so you don't die shooting weddings.

Beer Talk:
Casey - 90/~ Wee Heavy from Belhaven Brewery and also some scotch.
Steve - Moon Rambler IPA from Founders Brewing Co.

Q&A:
If I roll a critical fail while shooting a wedding that's making everyone roll to determine how well they'll do (they love DnD)... do I have to critically fail?
Should I ask clients if I can bring my own weed to smoke while shooting their weddings since my clients stopped sharing their joints during the pandemic?
What sort of wrap can I put on my camera body that looks professional but still shows off my inner nerd? (I would consider anything Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Gate or Farscape related, no Star Wars please)
How can I get a client to stop leaving gross emoji memos on venmo when I sell them stuff? My friends think this guy is paying me for sex because it's all eggplant gush or peach gush every time I make a sale to him.

Wedding Photo Hangover - Ep. #182 - Almost Pornographic Couple Kisses
play

07/29/21 • 43 min

Dustin and Steve are easing back into the new world of post-covid-vaccine weddings. Dustin is busy with real estate. Steve is trying out new straps for his cameras. Corny puns. Slippery nips. HBO Max. Steve drops big news and then even bigger news to end the episode. Beer Talk: Steve - Bourbon Barrel No Sparge Imperial Golden Ale from Taxman Brewing Co. Dustin - Soft Parade by Short's Brewing Company Q&A: What do you do if you live with someone who gets covid, but you're still testing negative? Do you call off your shoots anyway? Is anyone still on clubhouse? Do you cater to guests who ask for photos of themselves 3 days after a wedding? Have you ever had a couple go at it when you ask them to kiss? Like, really go at it? Episode art by everyone's favorite wedding celebrant Josh Withers. If you're looking for more info about COVID-19, be sure to head over to the CDC website. Want more? Wedding Photo Hangover - Ep. #127 - Can You Shoot Wedding Photos in a Cemetery?
play

12/09/19 • 94 min

First up we’re talking about that new Black widow trailer before we get into Instagram Analytics and doctor visits. It’s been a crazy year but I think we can all agree that Black Widow is so much better than Hawkeye. Next up we talk about Dustin’s experiments with Facebook Live and his big switch to Sony. We also talk about Steve’s purchase of just one measly monopod over the Black Friday sales, and Steve’s new found love of Rogue Filters. Then we talk about the Canon Eos Rs that’s rumored to be announced in February as well as the Canon Eos hybrid mount camera rumor (that’s an EF/RF mount camera, so you can use your old lenses on a new body without an adaptor). Finally, we talk about how everyone needs to stop telling their friends to buy Sony gear. Talk up some crappy brands so that Sony has competition. We don’t want a monopoly. So tell your frenemies to go for a Fujifilm or Canon or Nikon or Panasonic this year and tell your enemies to go with Olympus.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Punk IPA by BrewDog Brewing Company
Steven - InvEster by Taxman Brewing Company

Q&A:
How do you turn down a potential wedding client?
Has anyone shot wedding photos in a cemetery?
Does anyone else have trouble deleting old, unused photos?

First up we talk some more about email marketing. Then we talk about Facebook Live marketing and Instagram Story marketing. Dustin and Ulices talk a little bit about making the change to Sony. Dustin shares about shooting his first professional photo jobs completely with his Sony gear. Nikon shuts down their authorized repair program, a bride is arrested for allegedly forcing a photographer to pay to shoot her wedding, and a Kentucky photographer sues for her supposed religious right to discriminate against people (BTW, there's no religious right that allows anyone to discriminate).

Beer Talk:
Dustin - InvEster by Taxman Brewing Co.
Steve - Hazy Jane IPA by Brewdog
Ulices - Meat and Potatoes Dinner Stout by Lord Hobo Brewing Co., Old Fashioned by Anderson Valley, and Hopnaut by Great Divide

Q&A:
Should I dump my boyfriend if he isn't willing to pay for photos at the same rate that I charge my clients?
Where's the line with skin retouching? How much is too much?
Does anyone else deliver photos of Uncle Bobs at weddings with their galleries?

This week we’re talking about the Boston photographer that unwittingly spread COVID-19 to a bunch of clients, family, and friends after contracting the disease at a biogenesis conference. We also talk about a wedding photographer whose social media was hacked at the beginning of the global pandemic causing a lot of stress for her and her clients and after that we talk about a photographer that threatened to delete a problematic client’s photos. We also take a trip to the drone zone to talk about a new drone that can play dodgeball.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Puppy Slumber Party from Metazoa
Steve - Double Dorian Stout from Scarlet Lane

Q&A:
Should you shoot your mom’s wedding she’s refusing to cancel due to the pandemic when she’s not paying you anyway or signing a contract?
Anybody printing at home during the pandemic instead of having their prints done by a lab?
How often do you feel like bludgeoning the celebrant with your camera?
What do you do when you’re friends with the bride and she updates her facebook to say she’s in a relationship with a man who is not her soon-to-be groom?
Can you shoot a proposal at a park when your state has a stay at home mandate?
Does anyone offer more things to bring in extra income?

This week we're talking a lot about that new Mac Pro from Apple. It may look like a cheese grater, but we're pretty certain it doesn't grate cheese. Steve posits a theory about Patrick Rothfuss's book series The Kingkiller Chronicle which is oddly related to this new Mac Pro. We talk about what you should do if a bride asks you not to take many photos of a bridesmaid. We also talk about what it's like to do photography in your thirties.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Margarita Style Spin-Off from Taxman Brewing Co.
Steve and Dustin - NATURDAY from Natural Light!

Q&A:
What's the weirdest thing you've done for your photography business?
How do you critique a second shooter that's disappointed you?
Should you give money back to someone who cancelled their contract because they no longer want to do a complimentary shoot that was included in their contract?
