This Newsstand edition covers whether Judd Crawford's dead, steampunk junk, tons of cast notes, the Turner Diaries, Skip Gates' true claim to fame, how "Watchmen" stacks up against "Game of Thrones," the tomato tree, Adrian Veidt's mention of the Seventh Cavalry in the graphic novel, the Watchmen motion comic, and more.

Join The King Bee and Gene Lyons for a quick rundown of all the listener mail we couldn't fit into the Deep Dive.

Watchmen Episode 3 Summary:

“She Was Killed By Space Junk” Federal agent Laurie Blake of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force is asked to investigate Judd’s murder by both the FBI and Senator Joe Keene, Jr. She tracks down the Tulsa police rounding up Kavalry suspects and learns that Judd’s funeral is in a couple of hours. She attends and makes contact with Angela. A Kavalry member wearing a suicide vest attempts to seize Joe, but Laurie kills him while Angela saves the other attendees. Later, Laurie talks to Angela, explaining that she knows about the wheelchair treads at Judd’s lynch location and the existence of his secret closet; warning her about trying to protect him. Later, Laurie uses a special phone booth to leave a message for Dr. Manhattan on Mars, a “brick joke” based on their former allies. As she leaves, Angela’s empty car drops in front of her; she looks up and, seeing Mars, laughs. Meanwhile, the Lord attempts an experiment with a Phillips clone to no avail and hunts down a bison, but is warned off by the “Game Warden”, who reminds him of the terms of his imprisonment. The Lord sends off a letter acknowledging these terms, signing it as “Adrian Veidt,” and goes out that night to hunt again in his Ozymandias outfit.

Ep.6: Watchmen - 103 - Deep Dive

"Watchmen" Episode 3, "She Was Killed By Space Junk," completed the world building portion of the HBO series and shifted into the business of pushing the plot forward with showrunner Damon Lindelof's trademark depictions of nihilism, loneliness, and brutality.

Our third "Watchmen" Deep Dive outlines the tragedy of the second Silk Spectre, Lori Blake, and surfaces the clues behind why Adrian Veidt is isolated from the rest of the world. This episode also explores:

  • the difference between a dildo and a vibrator
  • more insights from Peteypedia
  • Lady Trieu and her intentions
  • the link between the Crawfords, the Keenes, and the Seventh Kavalry
  • why Devo was featured on the soundtrack
  • the meaning behind Lori Blake's brick joke
  • why a car fell from the sky
  • and whether the attack at Judd Crawford's funeral was staged.

Ep.8: Watchmen - 104 - Deep Dive

"Watchmen" Episode 4, "If You Don't Like My Story, Write Your Own," wasn't filler. It was a funneling of far-flung ideas and characters into a more concentrated storyline, powered by notions of legacy and reckoning.

Our fourth "Watchmen" Deep Dive asks "what's with all the eggs?" while exploring baby-making, Ozymandias' escape plans, and whether characters are learning to trust each other or just tired of wearing masks. This episode also explores:

  • Lube Man
  • Night Owl's connection to Laurie Blake's vibrator
  • echoes of Superman
  • and the dark history behind Bian's nightmare.

Watchmen Episode 4 Summary:

“If You Don’t Like My Story, Write Your Own” Lady Trieu buys out the farmland of an Oklahoma couple just moments before an object from space crashes onto their property as to claim its ownership. Angela learns about Will’s parents at the heritage center, when she hears her car crash outside and meets Laurie, finding a pill bottle inside. Later, Angela leaves the pill bottle and Judd’s KKK outfit with Looking Glass, and fails to capture an unknown vigilante who witnessed her dispose of Will’s wheelchair. Laurie has found Will’s fingerprints in Angela’s car, as well as a connection to Trieu’s facility at the Millennium Clock. Trieu provides them with a list of people with access to new lightweight drones, and in Vietnamese, tells Angela that Will wonders if she got the pill bottle. That evening, Trieu talks to Will about being upfront with Angela, but with events to come to a head in a few days, he would rather she figure it out herself. Meanwhile, Veidt collects fetuses from a lake to grow new clones of Phillips and Crookshanks after killing off all of the existing ones. With their help, Veidt launches the dead bodies by catapult to test the limits of his prison.
