It all began with a just handful of ships.

Enterprise had the unique opportunity, as the prequel series, to introduce many of the origins of basic Star Trek canon; how M-Class was derived from the Vulcan word Minshara (with regard to classifying planets suitable for humanoid life), the first use of photon(ic) torpedoes, at times hinting of creating the Prime Directive, and of course the first Starship named Enterprise. And possibly most important, Enterprise sheds light on the proud, yet trepidatious birth of the first Human fleet that comprised all of the United Earth Space Probe Agency's (UESPA) scientific exploration and planetary defense vessels.

For those of you who have watched or are currently watching Enterprise, you may not realize that in certain episodes, you truly see the limited reach and scope of Starfleet's ships of the line - in the mid 22nd century, they were likely a little less than a dozen ships in total. So, in this episode, we'll be exploring the origins of the first ships of Earth's Starfleet and the United Earth Space Probe Agency; how and why they were necessary and their service status while Archer and the crew of the NX-01 were pushing Warp Five into deep space.

The Tholians With James Swallow. Star Trek has created many species in over 50 years of lore, but one of the most beloved and mysterious of them all has been the Tholians. Originally seen in the original series episode "The Tholian Web," this mysterious species was simply shown as a flicker of colors and angular shapes with an aggressive attitude and shrill voice. The Tholians have been mentioned a handful of times and only seen in three episodes, however this has caused them to capture our imaginations and fuel fan speculaton as to their origins and physical appearance.

In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Patrick Devlin and Brandon Shea-Mutala talk with New York Times best-selling author James Swallow about the Tholians. We discuss the Tholian Web, traits of the species, their description in the Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual, their government, other mentions, and a bit of their mentions in the extended literary universe.

Vulcans and the Path to Discovery. Vulcans have been a part of Star Trek since the first episode of the original series. Viewers spent decades with this race, feeling that they understood what Vulcans represent, and how they behave. Then Star Trek: Enterprise came along and showed us a different side of the Vulcans - a side which is also represented in Star Trek: Discovery.

In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Patrick Devlin, and Brandi Jackola are joined by special guest Nicolas Anastassiou. They discuss the similarities of the Vulcans in Enterprise and Discovery, ponder first impressions and perceptions versus fact, ruminate on whether Vulcans are without emotion, and determine if a future episode of the podcast will be The Search for Patrick.

Movie Night - For Whom the Bell Tolls. Friendship and fellowship is important for people's general health and well-being. All of the Star Trek series have shown some sort of interaction between the members of its crew on screen in varying ways. The Next Generation had poker, Deep Space Nine had Vic's lounge, Voyager had Sandrine's and the resort program, and Enterprise had movie night. Since the invention of home video releases of films, many fans of movies have participated in an event know as "Movie Night!" People gather together in a group, watch a movie, and then discuss the film in a casual conversation. Sometimes they even go out for a slice of pie while they discuss. In this episode of Warp Five, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Mike Schindler to discuss the first film mentioned as having been watched during movie night on the NX-01: For Whom the Bell Tolls. We talk about the plot, the characters, the actors, white-washing, and whether or not the film still holds up. We even discuss Charleton Heston portraying a Mexican. Stay tuned to the very end to find out when our second movie night will be! Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Movie Clip (00:01:28) Welcome, Boomers! Marauders and The Magnificent Seven. Television shows have frequently taken inspiration from popular movies when it comes to story telling. Some influence is subtle, and some is obvious. In a follow up to Warp Five 101, where John Tenuto and Brandon-Shea Mutala compared "Dawn" to the film Enemy Mine, we take a look at another second season episode that has inspiration from a popular film. In this episode of Warp Five, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Brandon Cowles and Michael Schindler in a discussion that compares the second season episode of Enterprise to the films Seven Samuari and The Magnificent Seven. We also discuss the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Magnificent Ferengi" as well as Steven Soderbergh's film The Good German, which has nothing to do with the conversation. Re-imagining Enterprise Season One. "What if...", "Missed Opportunities...", "So much potential..." - stop me if these phrases sound familiar when describing Enterprise. When Brannon Braga originally pitched Enterprise to the United Paramount Network - a.k.a. the UPN - his original mission statement was essentially "Star Trek meets The Right Stuff". However the "executive powers that be" saw things differently and the first season of Enterprise never truly established itself as the prequel series that eventually would have become a bonafide source for Star Trek historical canon.

Fast forward a bit to Season Two and to one of my favorite episodes of Enterprise - FIRST FLIGHT. In this episode, Brannon Braga was finally able to find the right tone and storytelling format to illustrate his original pitch. If Brannon was given the freedom to execute his vision and introduce what he believed was "true to existing canon" story progression, I believe he would have successfully created a bedrock foundation for answering the most important question about this series...the WHY: Why was this prequel important to the overall cannon and history of Star Trek?

Travis Mayweather.

From the best and brightest that Starfleet had to offer, Travis Mayweather was chosen to be the first watch helmsman of the NX-01 because he was the most naturally gifted ensign trained for the position and logged in more deep space interstellar star hours than any pilot in StarFleet - from his earlier days as a "boomer"; a child born and raised in space on the ECS Horizon freight hauler, running cargo with his family until he joined Starfleet. He also was the first pilot to have been as far into deep space versus any other pilot candidate at that time.

In this episode of Warp Five, Norman C. Lao and Will Nguyen discuss the merits and quality of the very first helmsman of the Enterprise legacy: Travis Mayweather. Was Travis the most naturally gifted pilot candidate from the graduating class of 2151? What did Archer see in him that was "special" and "unique," moreso than any other helmsman candidate in the NX-01 program? Please join us in the Decon Chamber for a fascinating study of Starfleet's very first Warp 5 pilot.
