Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade: The Dream Journal, a miniseries in which we’re discussing Neil Gaiman and co.’s original run on The Sandman. Joining Pat and myself for this trip through the Dreaming is our friend and frequent guest host Mike Drew.

In this episode, we’ve each brought a discussion question prompted by our read of Volume Six: Fables and Reflections.

This Month’s Discussion Questions:

  1. Which story has your favorite art?
  2. Which story is your favorite?
  3. How does this volume progress Morpheus’s character and story?

And yes, I’m including a link to Adrienne Resha’s excellent essay about Ramadan, because I think it would be criminal not to given how much it informed our opening discussion.

Did you enjoy our discussion? If so, let us know by leaving us a review on your podcasting app of choice.

Waiting on the Trade - The Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes

08/01/21 • 44 min

Welcome to the debut episode of Waiting on the Trade: The Dream Journal, a miniseries in which we’re discussing Neil Gaiman and co.’s original run on The Sandman. Joining Pat and myself for this trip through the Dreaming is our friend and frequent guest host Mike Drew.

In this episode, we’ve each brought a discussion question (or two *cough* Mike) prompted by our read of Volume One: Preludes & Nocturnes.

This Month’s Discussion Questions:

  1. Which death in this volume is most heart-wrenching, and why?
  2. From Morpheus’s actions in this first volume, what kind of person (or personification) do you consider him to be?
  3. How does the art in this volume convey feeling about the story’s characters?
  4. In what chapter of this book does Sandman recognizably become Sandman?

Did you enjoy this new format and our discussion? Do you have constructive feedback or your own thoughts on Preludes & Nocturnes? If so, feel free to contact us or leave a review on your podcasting app of choice.

Waiting on the Trade - X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever

X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever

Waiting on the Trade

Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade, a comics book club for people who don’t have time for monthly comics!

In this episode, guest host Monte Nelson begins our crossover with The SJW Comic Book Club podcast, as we discuss Max Bemis, Michael Walsh, and co.’s X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever.

Explanations, Observations, and Links of Note

  • You may have noticed that this episode is mostly just an excuse for Monte, Pat, and me to bullshit about the X-Men. Given the many, many in-jokes Worst X-Man Ever contains, I think Bemis and co. would approve.
  • I still think Cyclops is the best X-Man. Feel free to send a letter.
  • For those who don’t know who Beak is, here you go. I won’t be giving explainers for any of the other X-Men we mention – they’re either popular enough they don’t need it, or they don’t deserve it.
  • Okay, fine, I’ll link one for Maggot. But that’s it!
  • Poor Beast; he’s so far gone.
  • And yes, Bailey has appeared in the mainline 616 Marvel Universe. It seems Miranda managed to port him over after all ...

Waiting on the Trade - Codename: Sailor V Vol. 1

Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade, a monthly comics book club for people who don’t have time for monthly comics!

In this episode, guest host Suzanne Payne helps us dive into the world of the Sailor Scouts, as we discuss the first volume of Naoko Takeuchi’s Codename: Sailor V.

This episode’s explanations, observations, and links of note include:

  • The Sailor Moon wiki has a pretty good rundown of Sailor V‘s connection to Sailor Moon, as well as a timeline of why and how the two series ended up overlapping. Also, this article does a good job of comparing the characters of Sailor V and Sailor Moon.
  • I am entirely convinced that Sailor Moon is the Japanese equivalent of 90s-and-forward X-Men. Sailor Scout lore is just as complicated and wild as X-lore. I love it.
  • Pat tracked down this explanation of manga and anime’s “swirly eyes = nerd with glasses” trope.
  • There is no org chart for the Dark Agency ... yet. Sailor V fans, get on that! (Also, I assume the Dark Agency would all be contained within the Dark Kingdom? The org chart expands ...)

Waiting on the Trade - Superman and the Authority

Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade, a comics book club for people who don’t have time for monthly comics!

In this episode, guest host Callum Smith helps us navigate the wild world of corporate superhero comics, as we discuss Grant Morrison, Mikel Janín, Jordie Bellaire, and co.’s Superman and the Authority.

This Month’s Discussion Questions

  1. Is this a complete story?
  2. Do superhero comics need an accessibility scale?
  3. Given the current proliferation of authoritarian Supermen, how did you find this portrayal of an older but more progressive Superman?

Explanations, Observations, and Links of Note

  • If you want a deep dive into how this particular sexy-dad-Superman sausage was made, here’s the start of Grant Morrison’s Superman and the Authority annotations. (Of which Cal and I gave the TL;DR version.)
  • Yes, we mistakenly used “he” instead of “they” to refer to Morrison a few times in this podcast. We apologize! It’s a tough nut to crack, sometimes, converting a pronoun that’s been in your head for nearly 25 years to a new one ...
  • If you want to learn more about the scuttled plans for DC’s 5G initiative (it’s actually kind of fascinating), here’s a catalog of Bleeding Cool’s articles on the topic.
  • What we’re talking about when we talk about evil Superman. (Also, if you want to read more about why I can’t with The Boys, click here.)
  • And finally, we didn’t quite get around to discussing Grant Morrison’s different takes on Superman throughout their career. If you’re interested in an examination of Morrison’s Many Supermen, click here.

  3. How is Nick and Charlie’s relationship a positive example of a same-sex relationship?
