Homemade vs Pro-Made: DIY or Don’t?
Vortex Nation Podcast
09/15/20 • 57 min
Mark, Jimmy and Nick Laufenberg sit down to discuss Jimmy’s “Entry-level-ish” rifle that he and nick put together here at the shop with a few simple tools, a vise and some trial and error. And no - no engineers were used in the making of this rifle, so you, too, should be able to do it! We go further in-depth on trigger selection and adjustment, lessons learned after our first build, whether or not this actually is the cheapest route in the long run, and the better perceived multi-use factor of this rifle over Mark’s (Yes, of course we get on the subject of “Just hunting”). Following this episode, Mark and Jimmy prepare to take their guns out to the range to shoot through their first “PRS-type” stages both as shooters and for their firearms. Stay tuned to see how they shot!

#10MinuteTalk - Optic Loadout for Whitetail Hunting
Vortex Nation Podcast
09/08/20 • 12 min
Jimmy and Mark settle in for 10-ish minutes to discuss their top recommendations for optics in the Vortex lineup for the typical midwestern whitetail hunter. Everything from the riflescope choice to binos, rangefinder and... a spotting scope? Who’da thunk! If you’re busy trying to throw together your whitetail gear before fall really hits this year, give this one a listen for starters.
Homemade vs Pro-Made: Pro Gunsmithing – What You’re really Paying for
Vortex Nation Podcast
09/14/20 • 78 min
Step into the mind of a professional gunsmith who builds precision long range rifles for a living. Isaiah Curtis of Curtis Custom Weapons joins Jimmy, Mark and Nick Laufenberg at his shop in North-central Missouri immediately after building and testing Mark’s ultra-high-end rifle. We get the chance to pick his brain about everything that actually goes into building the gun itself and how to make it as inherently accurate as possible. Cutting the barrel, head spacing, tolerances, and the balance struck between perfect ammo and a perfect rifle. Since we’re comparing Mark’s ultimate gunsmith-built custom rifle to Jimmy’s DIY-assembled Remage rifle (More on that later), we also discuss whether or not the “Entry level” option is actually the best for a brand-new shooter. In our next episode of this podventure, we go even more in-depth on Jimmy’s “Entry-level” custom precision rifle. Stay tuned!

Ep. 140 | Jerry bein’ Jerry (Miculek)
Vortex Nation Podcast
08/17/20 • 69 min
The last time we had Jerry Miculek on to tell us all about shooting fast, he graced all of our ears with a whole bunch of other amazing stories from his shooting past. This time, we got Jerry on again with Jimmy and Mark solely with the intention of picking his brain for stories, history and experiences once more. Interestingly enough, we learned more about the guy who sold body armor by shooting himself more than 200 times, how to weld a Ford Bronco back together with coat hanger wire, how to build a homemade bullet trap for less than $2.00, why airboats are so fun, and so much more we can’t even list it all – you’re just gonna have to tune in to find out!

#10MinuteTalk - The Mysterious H&K G11
Vortex Nation Podcast
08/11/20 • 16 min
Jimmy and Mark hang out with Ryan M to discuss the ever-mysterious H&K G11. Certainly many of us have seen this fascinating firearm in pictures or videos, but so few have actually gotten to see, hold or shoot one in person. The ammunition, function and form of the rifle altogether is extraordinarily unique. Ryan has done some extensive fan-boy research on the firearm along with some speculation about how it works and why it never really caught on to become mainstream. Full disclaimer – this is just some gun enthusiasts spit balling about a gun they’ve never seen before. We don’t claim to have all the answers, but it still brought about some interesting conversation. There’s also an offer of $60 on the table now, apparently, for any listener that has one and would like to bring it in for us to check out!
#10MinuteTalk – All Things Parallax
Vortex Nation Podcast
07/28/20 • 14 min
We’ve mentioned it in countless episodes prior to this one, but have yet to do a dedicated episode to the optical phenomena that is “parallax”. What is it and how does it affect us when we shoot? Some riflescopes have a “parallax dial” – what does that do? How about red dots and holographic sights that claim to be “parallax free”? When does it really matter and when does it not? We try and cram in all those questions and answers into this quick episode!
#10MinuteTalk – The 300 WSM… Finally…
Vortex Nation Podcast
05/28/20 • 17 min
Much to Mark’s delight, Ryan Muckenhirn joins him and Jimmy to discuss the 300 WSM. (Sorry, Texans – there’s a lot of different pronunciations we throw around of “WSM” in this one). All of Jimmy’s joking to poke fun at Mark aside, the 300 WSM is one impressive cartridge and to quote Ryan himself, could be looked at as “The modern day gentleman’s 30-06”. That’s a big claim to make, but could it be true? We talk all about design, performance, comparisons and limitations (Just to bug Mark) in this quick podcast!
#10MinuteTalk - 20 MOA Bases
Vortex Nation Podcast
05/14/20 • 15 min
In this episode, we go over 20 MOA bases (Or really any kind of canted base, for that matter - there are other options besides 20 MOA!) What do they actually do, how do they work, how do they actually affect your scope, why would anyone actually ever need one and what are some times when it could actually be the wrong move for your particular firearm and optic combo. Heck - your gun may already have 20 MOA built into the rail it came with! These types of bases can be a great practical tool when used the right way and in the right context. Check it out and let’s us know whether or not you use a canted base and why!
#10MinuteTalk – 7.62x51 NATO A.K.A “Dad”
Vortex Nation Podcast
05/12/20 • 10 min
Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss the 7.62x51 NATO, and inevitably, it’s civilian cousin the .308 in this episode from our NATO cartridge series. We talk about what it is, where it came from, what it was used for and out of which firearm platforms along with maybe the idea that there could be some conspiracy theories behind this cartridge? Ryan also compares this cartridge to his Dad, earning it the new nickname in our books as just “Dad”. Listen in to find out why!
